  1. Low 70s here before 8 am this morning. I hate hate hate getting up early but I certainly can't complain about our high desert mornings, they sure are great. We should be baking right around 100 or so for the next three days though. Thankfully I'm not really sure that there is such a thing as humidity here. The fire closest to home should be contained today...
  2. I used to be a "tax professional" but frankly it drives me up a wall. My best friend is a CPA and I let her keep me in the loop but this past season was my last, I've thrown in the towel. I don't even want to do my own!
  3. So much for giving up dessert. I made brown rice pudding, so yummy! I added flax, so it's totally healthy right?
  4. I always get D about 2 days before my period and up through the first day or two. It's my understanding that it's hormones. It's pretty awful but I just deal with it. It isn't the emergent sort of don't get more than 10 feet from a bathroom D that I get from gluten so it doesn't bother me too badly. I get pretty bloated too and break out my fat pants. That...
  5. Things get pretty complicated with making the claims in the US. Honestly I can only speak for the most recent year as nothing is set in stone for the upcoming filing year. In short, you'll need medical expenses meeting or exceeding 7.5% of your AGI and medical documentation stating that a gluten free diet is necessary. You would deduct the difference in cost...
  6. That looks so good and easy. The doctor said today that when my vision comes back fully I can go tyramine-light instead of tyramine free, yay! That means I can have yogurt and make the cake as soon as I can see like a normal person again. I also apparently need to stop clicking this dessert thread because once I drop 10% of my weight I can go back to eating...
  7. That just reminds me of something totally random. So, sometimes when you get up in the morning (this is especially true for smokers) you have this... taste in your mouth that is just yuck. It's kind of dry and just generally icky. I used to joke that it tasted like I licked a rhino's butt. friend: can you have this? me: well... I could friend: here...
  8. Merely coming into physical contact with gluten or gluten containing foods and products shouldn't be a problem as long as you are washing your hands before touching other things. If someone has an actual wheat allergy though, all contact should be completely avoided. I have celiac and handle have handled my husband's foods all the time with no issues. I had...
  9. Oh yes, do tell what it is. I need to know why I have fork marks on my monitor now. We had more strawberry flax milkshakes last night. I got my husband to have one with me, it was very difficult not to gloat.

I second raven. Whenever I get a new scrip I call the pharmacy to find out what company manufactures their generic. I then call that company to find out if it is gluten free. I do have 2 back-up pharmacies for when my preferred pharmacy can't fill for me. Don't bother asking pharmacists to provide you with any information, they simply do not have that information...
  11. After being gluten free for nearly 6 months I am more or less regular for the first time in my life after adding flax. I haven't noticed any bloating and I haven't been gassy other than the days I've eaten eggs. I actually just talked my husband into a strawberry flax milkshake for dessert. Lots of people react differently to different things. For me flax...
  12. My biopsy was positive and my blood tests were negative. My GI doctor asked that I come back in, said the tests suggested I may have celiac but he was unprepared to diagnose me without genetic testing. It was my family doctor who looked at my page long list of symptoms and said yeah, don't waste your time going back to him, it's celiac go gluten free. I have...
  13. I was feeling sorry for myself at the store yesterday. I was at Costco and they do samples of like a bazillion things. Pretty much all of it had soy and/or wheat so was off limits to me. As we meandered down one of the aisles I said to my husband that barring an anaphylactic to milk I am not giving it up. That may be an exaggeration, but it really stresses...
  14. So a day or two after I found out I'm some sort of freak of nature with all this pseudotumor crap I happened to be at the store and noticed a cart full of clearance stuff marked for $1. Without much hope but never one to pass up a deal I dig in and find The Pure Pantry chocolate chip cookie mixes which declare loudly on the front just for me SOY FREE. Sure...
  15. While not unreasonable, I still die inside just a little bit every time I pay it. I suppose I should be thankful I've been forced to give up yeast and cheese? Still hoping that on Monday when I see the doctor I can go from given up to in moderation. A 10" pizza by myself is in moderation right? Right?
  16. There are plenty of things that restaurants charge extra for, many of which have nothing to do with gluten free substitutions. Reminding them of the price of a loaf of gluten free bread only reinforces their position of charging extra. Of course they'll charge you an extra $1 for gluten free toast if they pay $5 extra for that loaf of bread with half as many...
  17. Lots you can still eat? A week in I thought I was going to starve to death. It isn't like you can go eat organic wheat bread, how insensitive of them. It's one thing to make a choice to eat a certain way, it is entirely another to have dietary needs thrust upon you. Some people just... grrrrrr, at least we understand it's tough.
  18. They are gluten free, I eat them all the time. I have found though that if I eat or drink anything at all that is sugary by itself I get very nauseous so I avoid doing that. (You would not believe the size box of those things you can buy at Costco!)
  19. I have rolled my eyes and put my face in my hand at people who are like "there's wheat in flour?" as if they didn't know. HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT?!?! Where do people think flour comes from? Bashing my head against my desk until I bleed would be less painful than some of the conversations I've had with some people. My favorite will still always be "well...
  20. You've been hiding a pool from us? I think it's time for a pool party. It's cooled off here today with some thunderstorms rolling through. Hopefully they'll bring relief rather than grief to the firefighters. I'm still feeling like it's too miserable to cook because now it's humid, ugh. Gonna grill a dog and some lettuce. Yup, I found nitrate free uncured...
  21. Strawberry flax milkshake. Oh yeah, milkshakes for breakfast all summer long. This is gonna be awesome!
  22. I can't have most sausage anymore because of what's in it. (I still get the urge to strangle my neurologist when I think about it.) This is a great way for me to get my fix! You have perfect timing to save me from breakfast drudgery, I've been on the verge of caving and eating the stuff in my freezer. I'm a huge fan of having stuff that's super quick and...
  23. I was a 2-3 pack a day smoker when I decided to give it up. I went cold turkey and without help other than moral support. (I was totally a b%$@# that week.) It was probably the single most difficult week of my life, but once I got past about the first week or so it started getting easier. It's been 5 years this week actually, and there are still times I get...
  24. I make macaroni salad with penne all the time. I just use the brown rice pasta I buy in bulk. I undercook it just a bit and add extra dressing to it. The noodles sop up the extra dressing and flavor but don't get soggy. It was pretty trial and error getting the ratio right, it's pretty wet going in the fridge and definitely needs to be made a few hours ahead...
  25. Turkey burger, grilled romaine and grilled tomato with melted fresh mozzarella. It's pretty toasty here but I'm going to enjoy a little early evening sun and grilling.
