ARCHIVED What Are You Growing This Year?
Adalaide replied to alex11602's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm getting ready to get some plants in pots. Probably a half dozen, or maybe even a dozen tomatoes and twice as many cucumbers. I don't really have any space but I also don't want to be spending another fortune this year on buying cucumbers for pickles. I could almost live off tomatoes when they're in season so I doubt I'll have any left over to can. I really... -

ARCHIVED How Long After Eating Gluten Do Symptoms Appear?
Adalaide replied to Mrs. M.'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Personally I find myself locked in the bathroom within about an hour. Everyone is different though so you may have a challenge pinning down the culprit. I'm not familiar wtih where you ate, but aren't fajitas usually made with flour tortillas? -

Awww poor pup. I've always kinda felt bad when animals get scared or hurt or in pain because unlike children we can't really comfort them. We can't help them understand what is happening or why. They're simply suffering and all we can do is be present for it. I think that in months with 5 Mondays we should make the 5th one an official holiday. No work...

Basically, while some of their stuff doesn't contain any gluten ingredients, it's all one big happy family at Lindt with shared equipment so they make no promises. If you're into the shared equipment sort of thing you could try it, but I thought they are a fair deal larger than malted milk balls. (Not totally sure, malted milk balls are nasty! Haven't touched...

Oops! Okay, not actually funny that you missed your MRI but it sounds just like something I would do. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long until the next opening. I was tempted to eat lunch with my fingers, but macaroni salad? Not so much. The pie maybe, but it's my crust is pretty crumbly and I'd make a mess.

I used to be really bloated. Since going gluten free none of my pants fit anymore, which is really exciting. I totally get the breathing thing, it isn't diffucult to breathe but I always felt like it should be, like I'm too full up inside to have room to inhale. I was far from a little burpy and gassy, I was like a full on biowarfare manufacturing facility...

ARCHIVED I Need To Complain!
Adalaide replied to Littllemel's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've heard horror stories of the awful medical care we give to the men, women and families who serve our country. I can sort of relate as I currently have medicaid so I had total crap for insurance myself. It's easy for everyone else to say to just buck up, look on the bright side, blah blah rainbows and sunshine and other useless crap. When I started... -
I'm actually working my "real" job today subbing at the college. I got up an extra 30 minutes early and packed myself some lunch. I've got myself a fat slice of mincemeat pie and a dish of macaroni salad with a hard boiled egg. I remembered an extra bottle of water in case I'm super thirsty and even made it out the door smoothie in hand. So, what's...

ARCHIVED New! And Need Some Tips!
Adalaide replied to SwtRandi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have found that cream of rice cereal is a great alternative to oats. I won't lie, I still really miss my morning oatmeal but I have grown fond of my morning slop. You can do pretty much anything to the rice cereal, I like it with bacon and syrup or with apples, cinnamon and a bit of sugar. For dressings I usually stick with a small local company, all their... -
ARCHIVED What Appliance Makes Best Bread Crumbs?
Adalaide replied to maximoo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have the GE brand blender that is just like the magic bullet only a whole lot cheaper. It came with 5 or 6 tall cups (just the right size for smoothies) and one smaller cup. It has one blender blade and one food processor blade and makes bread crumbs quite nicely. I do try to dry out the bread just a bit before I do it, either by just leaving it out for... -
Oh my gosh... Twizzlers. That was truly my first "what the hell?!?!?!" moment.

I'm wondering if anyone has bought and enjoyed this magazine. I noticed it in the store and it is a bit cheaper than the others. I gave it a quick glance in the checkout but the line was moving pretty quickly and I put it back in an effort to prevent totally throwing my money away on utter trash. (Just in case it sucks.) I'll probably head back to the store...

but you can if you want to? -
I have to disagree hexon, the only way that would burn a bridge is if the guy is completely unreasonable. Yes, checking out the restaurant is a good idea but eating there may simply not be an option. If she's happy to sit around for a while watching other people eat that's fine, but I wouldn't do that. There is no reason any of us should ever have to, especially...

There really isn't anything I can offer for advice about being tired all the time as I haven't conquered that myself. I can offer hugs though because I know how frustrating it is. My doctor told me that I have to get exercise although right now it just wipes me out and I can't take the impact of even walking. This has led to me joining the local fitness center...

Grilled chicken and au gratin potatoes. I meant to make a colorful veggie but was so distracted by the cheesy awesomeness of my first homemade taters that I totally forgot. -
"Bob I made a list of restaurants I'm comfortable eating at. If you insist on a different one I will insist on bringing my own food, there really isn't another option for me. I know you aren't comfortable with that but I'm not comfortable watching everyone eat. There is no reason that me eating food that won't make me sick should make you uncomfortable and...

Heck yeah! I could finally afford that specialist without having to worry about stupid referrals and how I'm going to pay for it. And I could drive to that appointment in my new Mustang. -
Don't be sorry for melting down, we all do it. I had my own meltdown on Monday, it happens. I'd say you're doing okay if you're handling things just fine most days. Sometimes a good cry or meltdown and a friend is all we need to make everything right with the world again.

If you're working overnight you're in the perfect position to stalk meat like I do. There are two local groceries who mark down their meats that are nearly out of date which they do early in the mornings. I got a $60 leg of lamb once for $20. I was so excited! But usually what I find is super cheap chicken, beef and pork marked down to 25-50% of it's price...

ARCHIVED Itemized Deductions For Celiacs
Adalaide replied to plumbago's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I certainly wouldn't suggest trying to write off the expenses if the whole household was eating the gluten free products but wasn't required to. In the event of an audit it would probably be highly suspect. I'm buying a loaf of bread every 1-2 months so it isn't like I'm buying a lot of it. I did forget to mention you absolutely must be able to get a note... -
My husband decided since we had some BK coupons which included a free smoothie that we'd stop on our way out of the house. I thought I'd ask if their fries are done in a separate fryer and they are so I got excited and ordered some. While I was waiting for our order I watched someone pick up the fry scooper and use it in the onion rings, then for fries. I...

ARCHIVED Crazy Doctor, Crazy Mil, Making Me Crazy
Adalaide replied to Adalaide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As for CC, I now have all of my own dishes, pots, utensils, everything. I don't use anything in the kitchen that those other people and all their healthy villi go around touching. I've marked everything that is mine with pink stickers, nail polish or duct tape. (Yes, pink duct tape exists!) I have two cupboards and a pantry shelf that are mine. No one touches...
