  1. Its cool for her to mention it though, she's across the pond. The rest of us though.... and heck, I'm in Utah. I may very well end up with a party invite!
  2. Yes, I have celiac. I make my husband brush his teeth before he gets all kissy on me if he has been eating gluten. So he didn't kiss me after he ate his waffle. So what? And we just ordered separate pizzas. I have a place I can go to get pizza, more than one locally in fact. He has his two favorite places, which aren't mine. I picked up my pizza, he picked...
  3. I'm just going to be repeating, but I'm going to say it anyway. There is no reason for celiac to limit what you can and can't do other than your choice of restaurants. It may involve slightly more planning ahead, but that isn't the same as not being able to do things. If you keep a list of restaurants handy, and a go bag you don't even have to entirely give...
  4. Maybe its a guy thing? I've tried explaining to my husband that I grew up with dinner being meat, potato, vegetable. He keeps trying to tell me every time that potatoes are a vegetable. I'm like whatever... they're not that kind of vegetable. He harasses me on purpose to see how long it will take me to realize that he is just doing it to amuse himself. After...
  5. It could just be that she doesn't do well with oatmeal. Unless they haven't recently updated their website, they have no oatmeals listed under their gluten free products either and all on their website are listed as being produced in a shared facility. That said, the products they do make that have oats in them that are gluten free say in the ingredient list...
  6. That isn't crazy at all. I love easy, don't overheat the house, crockpot dinners in the summer.
  7. There isn't anything necessarily wrong with the corn in stores here. It is sweet corn and I buy it and eat it when we don't have any of our own to eat. It just isn't what I prefer and grew up eating, and frankly "plain" yellow corn isn't nearly half as good as a silver variety or butter & sugar corn, which are also just both varieties of sweet corn. Of...
  8. I ended up making a cauliflower gratin with my purple cauliflower last night instead of onion rings. Tonight will be the rest of that with the rest of the meatloaf and more corn. I always knew I missed having silver corn, but didn't realize just how much until I had it again last night. Its something you can't just go pick up at the store or market, so you...
  9. This isn't a before I'm 40, but eventually. I want to spend a week at Giraffe Manor. That is pretty much everything big I want to do with my life. Little things though. I've never been to an aquarium or a planetarium, even though we have both up in the city. I'd like to go to ponycon. I'd like to pet more giraffes.
  10. One of the things that most companies require for employees who work from home is a home office. It has to be where the computer is, sometimes have a phone, and have a door. They expect their employees to work without interruption, just as they would if they actually came into a work office, so you would likely have to alternate your schedule with your husband...
  11. I grew up in PA so I know more about fun laws there. For instance, it is illegal to use dynamite to catch fish. This may seem like a stupid law... but if you think it is unnecessary you obviously have never been to rural PA!
  12. So it is illegal to crash two trains into each other? Isn't that more of a common sense sort of thing? The who Utah booze thing isn't particularly new, it was only in the news recently because some lawmakers attempted to repeal it last session. I have most commonly heard it referred to as the zion curtain. The rules around this are actually much more...
  13. I would simply call the store back and ask to speak to a manager. I think it is quite possible that you had one of those incredibly moronic cashiers who has no freaking clue what the heck they are talking about. As a general rule when an item is recalled it is done based on the lot number of a particular batch or batches. The UPC on the product does not change...
  14. I know you checked the Smarties website but from your post I am wondering if you are saying that you are buying the Smarties brand name candy or the store brand candy. You say the label depends on what store brand you are looking at, you you mean Target brand candy or Smarties brand candy at a Target store? There is a significant difference there, especially...
  15. Also, they may taste bad, so finding a sucker or a sponge is never a bad idea.
  16. I would be no different, if she were a child. If a parent of a child diagnosed with celiac were to feed them a KFC dinner, I would absolutely agree with you that they should be charged with child abuse and hauled through the court system. I have seen parents have flippant attitudes and I just want to scream at them, I want to tell them that their attitude...
  17. This is how I shop too. It really just simplifies things. If it takes more than 10 seconds to read the label, if you can't easily pronounce everything listed, there is probably something else on the shelf near it with less ingredients that is gluten free and won't make you cross-eyed trying to read it.
  18. Judging by the fact that my demeanor changed with my first dietary change, I would say it didn't take long at all for some symptoms to be at least noticeable. I didn't sleep through the night as an infant, my doctor told my mother to start giving me cereal at bed time. Within weeks I went from a generally pleasant (if an infant can be described as anything...
  19. Oh I only give my husband a hard time about it because its funny. We picked our first corn out of the garden. So that is for supper with something else. I'm thinking meatloaf maybe. And onion rings. We'll have our blackberries with some ice cream for dessert.
  20. But is it still in your pocket?
  21. Oh that should be no big deal to go talk to the person in charge at your church and be able to bring your own bread/crackers/whatever and have it set aside safely at the beginning and blessed with the rest. At my church (Mormon, but lets face it, its all the same basic principle) we just keep crackers in the Bishop's office that are safe for the intolerances...
  22. omg my husband does this too! He'll be all I feel bad that you can't X. Then he'll just do it without me, so he obviously didn't feel that bad! I had mango chile popsicles to feel better. Its amazing how you turn into a kid again when you're sick. I had pizza last night. We went to the farmers market that is in a large shopping center which also happens...
  23. No one is going to die if they go to a party and don't eat for a few hours. So you may be hungry. So what? So someone may get all butthurt over the fact that you don't want to spend the entire party in the bathroom with exploding bowels. Again, so what? If that is the kind of people hosting the party, you can either explain to them with the patience of a...
  24. Open Original Shared Link ....or maybe to brighten a particular someone's day
  25. I told my husband we're having gnocchi tonight. All he knows is that I needed potatoes to make it, he really has no idea what it is. All he said was "I'm not sure if I'll like it or not." My bet is on not, but whatever. That just means more for me! I trimmed one of the mint bushes this morning, had the sense this time to bring it in the house to do it...
