  1. I also emailed this info to all my friends and asked them to also submit comments. I agree about the more who respond, the better response we'll get. I want my son to grow up in a country that takes celiac disease seriously enough to LABEL food correctly. That's not too much to ask.
  2. Lisawil, The supermarkets most celiacs can find food are Wholefoods, Henry's, Trader Joes, Boney's......Google them and look for store locations in the area of California you will be staying. That's the fastest, best way to find gluten free/specialty shops when traveling.
  3. You need to get a specific test for Celiac. Who said you're allergic to gluten? Celiac disease is an intolerance to gluten, not an allergy. Whoever you're talking to about this, *I mean the drs involved*, need to be aware of the difference between an allergy and an intolerance and give you accurate advice, diagnosis, and testing to come to the correct...
  4. No, I haven't. But your story underscores the critical need for early diagnosis.
  5. Chebe might do it for you.
  6. My inlaws are like that and I don't know why either. Four years later and they still can't accept this disease.
  7. I understand. I don't want anyone to be told it's super easy and end up like I did. I can't believe it was so the opposite of what I was told to expect. Rather than the drs telling patients they can expect to go home the same day, they should be required to explain everyone reacts differently and that they MAY be in enough pain to warrent staying overnight...
  8. My son appeared mildly autistic. He seemed not to get the activity going on all around him. From birth till the the month after he turned three, he screamed, cried, didn't crawl, walk *until nearly 2yrs*, talk, didn't interact with anyone, had bloody noses daily...huge bloody noses, loose stools, and finally-the month he turned three, he went into full...
  9. My good friend is a nurse and when I asked her if I should have the gallbladder removed since I wasn't feeling any pain anyway, she said, "YES!" She told me stories of patients being brought in to the hospital in mortal agony experiencing gallbladder attacks. Some thought they were having heart attacks and some compared it to the pain of labor. She said...
  10. I injured my back last fall. An xray showed my back was going to be fine...but my gallbladder was a disaster. I had no symptoms. A week later I had the laproscopic surgery to remove my gallbladder. It was three teeny-tiny incisions. But I have to tell you...all this talk of laproscopic surgery being soooo much better and easier is a bunch of hooey. ...
  11. You can have dairy as long as you're not bothered by it. Some people with celiac disease experience temporary lactose intolerance, but that's your call. You can have cheese burgers. Get Kinnikinnick breads. www.kinnikinnick.com You can have most every food you enjoyed prior to going gluten free. Some may be the gluten free version of your favorites...
  12. Rather than a new toaster, I would suggest a toaster oven. You can use it to make pizzas as well as toast. It cleans out way better than a toaster. And saves money because you're not heating an oven up to 375 degrees. It costs way less to heat up a tiny toaster oven. And keeps the temp in the house down.
  13. "I think it's very important to be careful when discussing the idea of people inventing more food problems." I was careful. But being careful doesn't mean NOT bringing it up at all. The notion that an extended, undiagnosed food intolerance that causes any number of 200 symptoms that drs attribute to everything BUT the actual problem....and then in no...
  14. Whoops! I meant FLAX...not spelt. Geez, I'm losing it.
  15. I thought the research said that introducing grains between 4 and 6 months could trigger gluten sensitivity? I can't keep up.
  16. Keep in mind that WholeFoods is great, but pricey. I once stated here that if I had a limited budget, the only things I'd buy from the "specialty" shops would be Tinkyada Pasta and Kinnikinnick bread. All other products can be found gluten free in your local regular shopping store and they have coupons for those! It's great if you can go to town on the...
  17. I recently went gluten-free with three other family members. None of us experienced what you described. Maybe you're not getting enough vitamins. Our menu hasn' t changed, just the omission of gluten and most dairy. I use all gluten-free substitutes for our regular gluten full menu. Plus, with the elimination of dairy, I added one spinach/lettuce salad...
  18. Wait a minute. I do have a point that psychological food issues can arise after years of undiagnosed celiac disease is finally found. I wasn't being mean and accusing you or anyone else of being masochistic or looking for attention. I think people who've been suffering for decades as a result of the "healthy" foods they've been eating, have a very real...
  19. OUCH! I am sorry for upsetting you and anyone else who reads my post. I have a myopic view of this as I stated BECAUSE my child has no other allergies/sensitivities. So I merely voiced my thoughts from my limited experiences. NOT condemning those who have other allergies/intolerances....real ones, or not. I'm not judging you or anyone else. I thought...
  20. They make small water bottles now. I think Arrowhead makes some. We drink very little juice around here because it's full of sugars that add calories and damage the teeth. I usually put other things that damage teeth into my son's snack lunch box. small bags of M&Ms smarties gluten free puddings *(for class birthday and parties only,...
  21. Hey, the ENER-G pretzels are good. Give them a try.
  22. My celiac disease kid has no other allergies that I'm aware of. I get concerned reading here how celiacs tend to have a bunch of accompanying food allergies/intolerances. I wonder if it's because I caught him early enough?? Or, and this may tick some people off....I wonder if some Celiacs start *looking* for more food issues??? Is that too rotton to suggest...
  23. I liked how you considered some people don't want to bake just because they're going gluten free. I've been sent to several dieticians as I changed drs and they always began with the fact that I'd have to bake my own breads and I would have to use rice flour.... That's when I interrupted. The dr we saw last year began with that sentiment and when I interrupted...
