  1. Sounds like you have a sensible doctor! He probably expects the dietician to help you with the diet... but you might find that you know more then the dietician from reading this board already, so don't expect too much. I guess nutritional deficiencies might not be something that a GI doc specializes in, as odd as that might sound... Anyway, I...
  2. I'm Gluten-free Casein-free as well, and I can also say that casein gives me a reaction just as bad a gluten. Do go off it! What you shouldn't do though, is start substituting dairy with a lot of soy milk products! I like coconut milk as a substitute for dairy. Some people use rice milk or almond milk for with their cereal... I don't eat cereal...
  3. It would be even more noticeable for someone from Holland. Since this is such a flat country, and very densely built, meaning in towns distances are very manageable, everybody bikes to places. People might drive to work, or take a train (also very common) but then they might bike to the shops or to the train station or just for fun in the weekend. Or...
  4. I'm not saying that a gluten free diet wouldn't help, because obviously several people here have reported that it did help them with other autoimmune conditions as well, and I'm not saying that there isn't a connection in your case. There might well be, but in someone else's case, the connection might not be there. There are also people here on the board...
  5. I mostly agree, but like Steve, I'd just like to be precice and say that no diagnostic evidence means we don't know whether or not the person has celiac, not that we definitively know that they don't have it. Some celiacs are bound to be missed by the current diagnostic tools, because they are tested too early to show a rise in antibodies, or biopsies miss...
  6. I will get bloated from anything I eat (regardless of if I'm normally sensitive to those foods) for up to three weeks after a glutening. So if you're like me, yes that could still be from the glutening last week. Pauliina
  7. Ooh, Nancy, there's no topping that! I did walk around with a pair of undies in a sweater sleeve for several days once, but luckily (this was in high school...) I was alone when I discovered tham. phew! Pauliina
  8. Thanks everybody! Ok... 97 to go... Pauliina
  9. I've noticed a couple people have a different text under their avatar, instead of "advanced community member" or whatever it was that is usually there. I'd love to change mine to explain my avatar, how do I do that? The joke is of course often people assume I can't eat ANYTHING and I just had to take a pic of this "little snack" I'd made for myself....
  10. Then how on earth do you deep fry it? This board, I learn something new every day... Heh, if the pasta didn't kill me, the cheese would. Pauliina
  11. Yes, as the others said, it's completely normal to have good days and bad days, even when you don't make any diet mistakes. Add to that that a reaction will go on much longer than you'd think (mine can take a couple weeks) and you might sometimes be sick from a case of cross contamination you already forgot about! Leave dairy out completely for...
  12. Sorry you got sick. You got lots of good advice here already, I just wanted to add that talking to wait personnel hasn't worked that well for me, I much prefer talking directly to the chef! They've all been really accomodating and much more knowledgeable about what goes into the dishes. I'd also personally prefer to stay somewhere where I have the...
  13. It was a gradual change so I'm not sure, but I think by one and a half years into the diet I was consistently doing ok with three four meals a day. I know, probably not what you hoped to hear. Pauliina
  14. I was constantly hungry for a while after going gluten free, well, before that, too. I've been gluten free for almost two years now and my appetite is more normal than it ever was really. I eat 3-4 times a day. When I first went gluten free I decided to allow myself to eat enough to feel satisfied, but I did try to stick to good stuff to get as much...
  15. I know last week seems like a long time ago, but my glutening symptoms often go on (although mostly not as intense as the first days) for two or even three weeks. Getting bloated after every meal is a good example of what happens to me, even two weeks after a glutening. Maybe the smoking hid this in the past? Pauliina
  16. One thing you should know is that blood tests are not reliable in patients who don't have complete villous atrophy (meaning the vili in the intestine are completely gone). In your case since it sounds like you just have the first possible signs of intestinal damage, there's a really big chance your blood work for celiac will come back negative. There...
  17. Oh, I was thinking of gluten-free cookies! Not that I get cramps from those... but fruit just really tastes better! Sometimes I buy gluten-free cookies and bread and then at home I just wonder why I bothered, because really I just want a salad.
  18. Adding to all the other goood suggestions - I've noticed that a lot of times when I start to have cravings for sweets and cakes and stuff, what my body really wants to have is more veggies and fruit. Somehow in my head it turns into sweets. When I take care to eat a lot of veg and fruit and meat or fish for protein, I don't crave all the crappy stuff nearly...
  19. Heh, I just asked my hubby what he thought and he said the only thing that would really annoy him would be vague information. He at least would prefer to hear "I can't eat wheat, barley, rye and oats" to "umm, I'm not that hungry" or some other excuse. Pauliina
  20. You could also explain to your husband that while the intestine isn't fully healed yet, it will be very difficult for your body to absorb fats. So eating fatty food really doesn't help! What would help the most I agree with others is eating easily digested food that you like. It's no good if eating becomes a chore either! I think your mum is associating...
  21. The thing that often strikes me about these sorts of guidelines is... that they're mostly made by people who don't have celiac themselves. Some people do react to supposedly gluten free things. Add to that that what is considered safely gluten free varies from country to country and from guideline to guideline.... Pauliina
  22. How come noone has mentioned them yet - RAISINS! I'm gluten free dairy free mostly lectin free and soyfree light - but I can still have bananas... Pauliina
  23. Just thought I'd point out that if you want to pursue testing, you're risking a false negative if she stays gluten free. Pauliina
  24. A perhaps revolutionary idea: don't eat snacks at all. I've stopped eating snacks, instead I eat 3 or sometimes 4 times a day and give my stomach time to completely digest and empty itself of the foods that I've eaten before putting anything new in there. Works well for me. It only works when I take care to eat enough fats and protein in my meals...
  25. You know, I'm not sure but I've been thinking the same lately. I haven't been clearly glutened for at least half a year, and I wonder if I've really been that succesful with my diet or if my symptoms have gotten milder. When I first went gluten free my glutening symptoms got way worse, but then after a while they did start to get less dramatic, and now I...
