  1. Welcome to the forum. I wanted to quickly point out that if you have mainly neurological symptoms, there's a possibility that you don't have a lot of intestinal damage. So it is possible that the gastro doesn't find enough evidence for a celiac diagnosis, but that should NOT mean that you shouldn't try the diet. After all the testing is done, don't consider...
  2. Welcome on the forum! I don't quite understand the logic of this. If you suspect that something else on top of celiac is going on, wouldn't it be better to stay gluten free, so that the results of the gluten aggravation don't get mixed up with whatever else is going on? If you eat gluten again, any damage that you'll find can be explained by the gluten...
  3. Sounds like a good thorough doc then! Pauliina
  4. Kenyonsmommy, if you are Iga deficient, how did your doctor decide that your blood test was negative? It's my understanding that an Iga deficient person would always test negative, and they need to be tested in some other way for celiac, by biopsy for example. Pauliina
  5. I think after a while, your immune system just plain starts to get overtired and doesn't react quite that strongly anymore... hence the symptoms aren't that dramatic. After a period gluten free, the immune system has had a chance to rest, and when you then have gluten again, it has the strength to react properly again. It's not the gluten itself that causes...
  6. I used to cough a lot until well into my second year gluten free. In my case it was acid reflux, which apparently was caused by the gluten because now it's completely gone, and so is the cough. Good luck, the doc sounds nice in any case! Pauliina
  7. There are several reasons why you might get symptoms again on the diet. First of all, like Noel said, there might be something else going , not instead of, but on top of the celiac. Second, many people find out that they also are sensitive to other foods, like in my case I get exactly the same symptoms from cow's milk as from gluten, and I have to be...
  8. I feel old! Thanks all! It's funny, I hadn't even realized how I'd missed sharing food with other people... Pauliina (in reality, now 35)
  9. It's my birthday today, but our aikido club had extra training that I wanted to go to. So I decided to take something to eat and to drink with me for everyone and celebrate that way. I didn't want to take something that I wouldn't be able to eat myself, so I took some gluten free lemon cookies and some gluten-free cinnamon cookies, cucumber chunks and mandarin...
  10. I just wanted to second, or third, the coconut milk recommendation. One of my comfort foods is apple sauce with coconut milk. A thick creamy coconut milk with 18% fat... Pauliina
  11. In my case, going gluten free really improved my skin. The other thing is that soy really gives me baaad acne and I avoid soy products for that reason, though I don't worry about stuff like soy lecithin in chocolate. Chocolate BTW doesn't seem to affect my skin one way or the other... Soy gives me the deep painful bumps, gluten and cow's milk OTOH sometimes...
  12. If you're only lactose intolerant, in my experience eating something that "may contain traces of milk" shouldn't be a problem. Yes it's probably just a chance of contamination from making it on the same lines they make milk chocolates. Pauliina
  13. Regardless of how the tests turn out, this might turn out to be a good experience. Because now you can feel the difference that gluten/no gluten makes. If you had just continued gluten free, you might keep wondering much longer. Good luck with the tests! Pauliina trying to look at the bright side of everything....
  14. And just for interest, in Dutch it's "coeliakie" and in Finnish "keliakia"... Heh, the spell check is confused... Pauliina just back from Christmas vacation...
  15. I don't avoid small amounts of soy, like soy lecithin in chocolate, but if I eat bigger amounts of it I start to break out like a teenager. Apparently it messes up my hormones.... Pauliina
  16. Yes what others said, it's possible to have even vili completely gone and still have negative bloods. Pauliina
  17. Well, when you think about it, vili damage doesn't develop overnight. First there's going to be just mild irritation, then inflammation, then more and more damage I guess. So it could be that you just caught it early. I'd try the diet in any case... Pauliina
  18. That's sweet. If it was a stainless steel pot, I guess it would be ok? Sorry. Pauliina
  19. One thing that I have experienced time and time again is that you really should listen to a gut feeling about things. If you have a feeling that this is a scam, I don't think you should do it, whatever anyone else says. It might be completely legit, it might just be this particular practitioner, but it's probably not for you. Whenever I have tried to convince...
  20. Fun to do, but mine was almost completely wrong... Pauliina
  21. As others have said, neurological symptoms can take quite a while to clear after starting the diet. 4 months is not really that long in this respect. So I hope he'll still improve. Pauliina
  22. Sally, as to your sisters son... children often are asymptomatic once they get a bit older, that's why they used to think that celiac could be outgrown. It's sometimes called the honeymoon period. The thing is that childrens bodies still heal very rapidly and so they might be able to heal the damage that gluten does at the same rate as the damage happens...
  23. Just to be picky... it's not that soy sauce isn't made of soy. They use wheat in the production process somehow, soy sauce is mostly soy in every case, but it can have some wheat as well. There are soy sauces that are only soy, but those are hard to find... Pauliina
  24. I'm afraid wishful thinking doesn't work with celiac. If you're not 100% sure about something, don't eat it. Glutinous rice, btw, is just rice, the name sounds dangerous but glutinous in this case just means it's sticky. Gluten is the protein in wheat that makes wheat bread etc. stick together, glutinous rice is sticky in a similar way but it's safe...
  25. How do you know that oats aren't bothering you? Have all your neurological symptoms resolved already? If they haven't you can't really know that they're not from the oats and other sources of gluten that you still have in your diet. The way to know, that you asked about, is to go absolutely 100% gluten free and see what happens. Before you do that,...
