  1. Hey, thanks for posting that, I had been wondering what exactly the wording is. Yeah I realized after I posted that it probably shouldn't have said gluten free, but I've learned from experience that if they say "suitable for coeliacs" then at least that's almost a guarantee that it's not completely gluten free and I'll get sick. Um I could have just...
  2. I think, seriously, that the main thing now is to take it easy, get plenty of rest, and let your body heal from the gluten challenge. It will take some time. Probiotics is a good idea, I hope someone can recommend a good brand (as I'm in Holland). I don't think it's strange that you are still tired and bloated. It can take a while. Glad to hear...
  3. I'm another cow's milk sensitive who can have goats cheese at least. Don't do too well with goats milk though. I don't know if I'm allergic or intolerant to cows milk but I'm guessing intolerant, don't have typical allergy symptoms or any other allergies. I don't miss dairy much, except for really creamy luxurious ice cream, and I would miss cheese if...
  4. I just visited Liverpool a couple weeks ago, and now I suddenly understand the dirty looks I got at the bus stop... Oh, and I did get zapped by some ham that was labelled "suitable for coeliacs". That wording should have been a warning sign in itself! If it was truly gluten free it would have said so! But in general it's really quite doable....
  5. I just wanted to quickly point out that buying a second hand bread machine probably isn't the best idea... Weren't we just talking about second hand gluten? Pauliina
  6. You said you were new to the diet, what have you been eating in the last week? Is it possible that what you have been eating instead of gluteny foods is somehow out of balance nutritionally? A dietitian might not be up to date with which products are gluten free and which are not, but they could probably help with putting together a diet that has all the...
  7. Is that first test result for total IGA? If so, it looks like it's pretty low. If you have a low total IGA, the IGA TTG will also come out low regardless of if you have celiac or not, because it means that your body just doesn't produce much of that particular antibody. I would clarify that with your doctor. I also agree that it's a good idea to try the...
  8. Maybe you had it for longer but the pregnancy kicked into high drive or something? Pauliina
  9. You seem to have some of the same foods to avoid as I do. I can't have gluten, cows milk, eggs, legumes, nightshades, and I don't react very badly to soy but it gives me pimples so I avoid it anyway. My typical day would be: Breakfast: rice cakes with goat cheese, or rice cakes with nut butter (not peanut!) and slice of meat PLUS two pieces of fruit...
  10. I used to think I was severely lactose intolerant because milk products made me so sick... but oddly enough the lactose solution didn't have ANY effect on me at all. I've since figured out that I'm sensitive to casein... apparently more so than to just lactose. Either that or my intestines were just too shocked to react. I hope you feel better soon...
  11. I've made this suggestion before but it bears repeating. Actually it's following gfp's comments: Do make it clear to people whenever you feel ill from a glutening. DON'T try to hide it, especially from family. If you do, they won't have any way of knowing how sick you get. jerk and moan, "forget" to flush the toilet, spread your lovely smells all over the...
  12. Hopefully the probiotics will help with the diarrhea. For the sore bottom, I'm thinking that whatever it is that parents of small children use to help with diaper rash might work well. Maybe some parents will chime in... Pauliina

    ARCHIVED Hey Guys

Sorbitol in largish quantities has a laxative effect, so if that's the symptom you're having right now, without the mood symptoms etc., I'd suspect too much sorbitol in one go instead of a glutening. I try to avoid anything with artificial sweeteners because of this effect... ' edit: Patti was posting at the same time... Pauliina
  14. I just got back after a week away - I'll keep you in my thoughts as well. I hope they figure out whats going on and that you get better! Pauliina
  15. This is exactly how it is for me, too! Pauliina
  16. Jenny, it's probably what ravenwoodglass said, you're developing a bit more muscle instead of fat, so you are slimmer even though you weigh the same. The best measure is how your clothes fit and how you feel, not what the number is. Another thought I had is that if you were bloated before, maybe the bloat has gone down but your weight hasn't actually...
  17. That makes sense! BTW, I read somewhere, or heard somewhere, that kids saliva actually lacks an enzyme that adults saliva does have, that makes brussel sprouts taste more bitter to kids. And no, I didn't hear this from a kid! :D It would make sense though seeing how many kids really hate brussel sprouts. I was surprised when I tried them some while...
  18. I've had a casein reaction from wine as well sometimes. I stick to Spanish, Italian and French wines now and so far, so good. Pauliina
  19. You've got good advice from more experienced people than I am (I don't have kids). I just wanted to tell you about the rule my parents had when I was a kid: we had to taste at least a tiny little bit of everything on offer, but if we hated it, we didn't have to eat it. Even as a kid I could see the logic in that. The beauty of it is that eventually you have...
  20. I get anti-social as well. I can't think straight when I'm glutened, and trying to respond to people feels like an overwhelming effort. Actually, a little light small talk can be ok, but if someone then asks me something where I have to think about the answer I get really upset, lol. And I also can't find words then, I forget the beginning of a sentence before...
  21. Are those percentages of people with biopsy-diagnosed celiac? Because if so, it would leave out a huge number of people with neurological symptoms but without villous atrophy, and who knows what the percentages of different genes might be if those people were included. I think it's pretty obvious you have a neurological presentation of celiac disease...
  22. It sounds like this company is following European rules about what is gluten free, which say that a product that has under 20mg of gluten per 100g of product may be called gluten free. They're also saying that if there is gluten in this product, the source of it is in the glucose syrup etc. In Europe, glucose syrup made from wheat is an exception in the labelling...
  23. Personally I think that you have enough symptoms of celiac that it would be worthwhile to do the blood tests. Why on earth doesn't your doctor want to do that, it's not the most expensive or invasive test in the world?? If you're female, would it be an idea to take a family member, preferably male, with you to the doctor and insist on the test? Unfortunately...
  24. I had nausea in general. Mind you, I don't any more (after two+ years gluten free). Working out in my case means aikido, which involves a lot of rolling... not a good combo with feeling nauseous. Pauliina
  25. Heads up - sake is NOT always safe! There can be barley in it, or used in the production process somehow. Pauliina
