  1. Welcome to the board! We are happy you have found us. It sounds like you have been through a lot, health wise. I would recommend that you keep eating gluten until after you bloodwork in order to have accurate bloodwork. You will need to discuss if you want an endoscopy/biopsy with your dr., as you don't want to have to go gluten free, then go back on...
  2. maxdad, on the contrary: to me and many others, it does make sense! it is easy to understand why you would want an official diagnosis!!!!! whatever you do, we just want you to be better, whether it is gluten related or not! Laura

    ARCHIVED Symptoms

Newg, Welcome to the board! We are happy you have found us, amidst your diagnosis. Yes, it is normal. How long have you been on the gluten free diet? It takes awhile to heal. For some, they see improvements but it takes months to get back to normal. Others heal and get better pretty quickly. Others see no improvements and then months later, get...
  4. Patti, just finally got on and saw the thread. I am so sorry to hear about your b-i-l. I will keep him in my prayers. Please, keep us updated. How is your sister doing with all of this? They are lucky to have you in their corner for support. Love, Laura
  5. Marie, yes, cute avatar Happy that it is helping...when your question comes back, just let us know. Its overwhelming at times! (What am I saying, it is always overwhelming in the beginning!) Laura
  6. My best advice: Get the results, hard copy (not someone reading them over the phone), and post them on here, word for word. The doctor's office has to get them to you. Call them, tell them what you want, and that you are coming up there to pick them up. We'll help you out! Laura
  7. This is factually incorrect. Please note that these statistics involve Celiac, not non-Celiac gluten intolerance. The latest statistic is that 1 in 133 Americans have Celiac (Dr. Fasano, UMD- The currently identified (and, there may be more, but this covers probably 97-98% of Celiacs) genes are HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8. About 30-ish percent...
  8. You are looking to be tested for HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8, which are commonly identified Celiac genes. You can tell your doctor this (just that you want to be gene tested for Celiac) and he can order it for you and insurance will probably cover it (rather than enterolab, which insurance often doesn't cover).
  9. Hey Jillian! Yep, he has long been a known Celiac. He even does some charity stuff...I forget what it was...and his donation went to one of the Celiac groups. Yay Celiacs!
  10. Welcome to the board!!!! We are happy you have officially joined us. I encourage you to read, read, read, do searches, read some more, and ask ANY question! We'll be happy to help. You said, "I do think that it might just be wheat for me but how would one find out for sure? " Well, there are two ways. 1. Go gluten free. Which, you did! And...
  11. Agreed---I would not eat malt unless I knew definitely it was something else...because it is very often/usually barley
  12. In general, distilled alcohols are safe (see link: https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-23106011054.bc which discusses it). However, there are a select few that react, although it is unclear if it is a Celiac reaction or another mechanism. I drink distilled alcohols. If you find later on you do not do well on them, then you'll need to make another...
  13. Welcome to the board! I'm sure it means a lot to your '2nd mom' that you are taking the steps to help her out and support her. Feel free to ask any questions. Read, read, read! Let us know what we can do to help!

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

mumseyh, there are many, many doctors who understand that celiac damage can be easily missed. Even the leading experts, who push for the gold standard biopsy, fully acknowledge that intestinal damage is patchy and can be missed (Dr. Green even discusses it in his book, which is referenced in my signature...along with Dr. Fasano, he is a leading Celiac physician...
  15. cmom, do you mind if i ask why you are having the barium/follow through? to check for other issues/maintenance (to make sure everything else is ok...no complications), I'm assuming, since it isn't used for Celiac testing. Wow-every three years---you are a better person than me I can handle lots of stuff...drinking that stuff was not one that went...
  16. keep us updated! we are pulling for you! good luck!!!!
  17. I must say, I've yet to hear of anyone recommending a colonoscopy every two years. Like it was mentioned before, the correct procedure to check for damage is an endoscopy, which checks the small intestine. If they were in fact referring to an endoscopy (EGD), the "old" thinking used to be that follow up biopsies were necessary. Now, that is not the case...
  18. For most, Celiac damage is reversible. There are cases (including cases on this board) where people don't fully recover. That being said, the vast majority who have Celiac, when they go on a strict 100% gluten free diet, recover. It takes awhile for some to return to 'normal', but Celiac is actually a "great" (haha!) disease to have because it is controllable...
  19. That is such GREAT news! As a mother, you must be absolutely bouncing off the walls! Thanks for sharing your success story!
  20. there are three mayo clinics: minnesota, arizona, and florida.
  21. If you can wait, and I know its hard, I would recommend waiting. Keep eating gluten. While you are at the doctor's, tell him you want the FULL celiac panel run. (www.celiaccenter.org and click on FAQs lists the ones you want...often, doctors only run 'some' of them and you need the full panel. Print it out and bring it with you.) Its not 'that' far off...
  22. thanks!
