ARCHIVED Can I Cope? Venting...
happygirl replied to imsohungry's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh, Julie, I am so sorry. I unfortunately don't have any advice and don't know much about seizures. I did find these on celiac.com but I'm sure you've seen them: https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-04106572867.ed https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-04106572867.ed https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodi...-04106572867.ed I... -
Wow, Carla, you are my new official mother on the board!!!!!! She used just about every trick in the book to get me to stop as a kid (and obviously, none worked.) Thanks for the 'encouragement", MOM Susan, We have been in Virginia Beach for a year (moved here after I finished graduate school). Didn't have a real "plan"---go figure. Decided this summer...

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Contamination
happygirl replied to kbtoyssni's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I personally like the theory of little elves putting gluten in. If thats the case, then elves in my house must be busy with my intolerances! haha! regardless of the elves, I hope you figure it out. -
my toes are almost always a shade of mauve. Even why I buy new colors, they are all in the same family. I don't do well with change (I say this as I am surrounded by boxes because we are moving next weekend!) I envy you long-nailed women. I bite mine so bad, its embarrassing.

ARCHIVED Hi Guys, Newly Diagnosed And A Few Questions
happygirl replied to Kody's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is my soapbox. Feel free to edit out or add to! Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the body reacts to gluten, the protein in wheat, rye, barley, and non pure oats. From the NIH: Open Original Shared Link Gliadin is a 33 peptide chain in gluten that our body specifically reacts to. It causes a variety of symptoms, up to 200 have... -
haha, ok, I'm not forty, but 25, but this random thread (spelled correctly) was too hysterical to pass up. This is why women are great-random conversations that a man doesn't want to follow, but we think is completely logical. Ok, so what do 40 year old women talk about? (haha, I'm sorry, I couldn't resist). And, Floridian, I hope I look as good as...

ARCHIVED Hi Guys, Newly Diagnosed And A Few Questions
happygirl replied to Kody's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hahaha....no, they won't think you are weird for THAT! weird for other things, quite possibly! I would just that it makes you sick and you can't eat it. And move on. (Unless its someone who wants to know more). Obviously, my friends and co-workers know about it. It's my life! But, if we go out with "new friends," I try to minimize it, because I... -

Franceen, I don't envy your position at all. I sure hope that your next trip affords you more options! Thank goodness we are all back at home and can eat without fear! Hope you have a great day...good chatting with you. Laura -
ARCHIVED Hi Guys, Newly Diagnosed And A Few Questions
happygirl replied to Kody's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Cody, I'm happy that this is helping you. You have no idea how common your posts are. Which, is actually sad...sad that so many people go through this. The GOOD thing, though, is that you found this forum where you can get support and answers. You'll learn things here that a doctor would not have a clue about, or even a dietician. You really have to... -
ARCHIVED Why Cosmetics Need To Be Gluten Free
happygirl replied to clbevilacqua's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Franceen, Completely agree and understand about the cross contamination when eating out. Happens way too often, even to knowledgable consumers. Frustrating! But, what I was referring to is the fact that you knowingly eat gluten containing products (Capt Crunch). That, to me, is not gluten free (knowingly putting gluten into your body). Many of... -
ARCHIVED Hi Guys, Newly Diagnosed And A Few Questions
happygirl replied to Kody's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Cody, Welcome to the board! It can be overwhelming at first, but we are here to help. We've been there and want to help! I thought I'd list some brands of things that I especially like. for pastas: Tinkyada brand (rice based) pasta is a great one. Many upscale grocery stores, health food stores, and online carry it. I tried a bunch of others and... -
ARCHIVED Why Cosmetics Need To Be Gluten Free
happygirl replied to clbevilacqua's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You are probably referring to Dr. Alessio Fasano, at the University of Maryland at Baltimore. And yes, the current belief is that gluten does not pass through the skin. However, for some unknown reason (gluten allergy? irritant? who knows?) for some, gluten to the touch does cause them to react. Franceen, I am not trying to pick a fight, but I do want... -
ARCHIVED Response From Enterolab

Thanks for posting this, Jen. I had spoken to her on the phone and she gave me similar answers. Nice to see it in writing. She was extremely helpful. -
ARCHIVED We All Need A Laugh...to Cope
happygirl replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Them: "I couldn't live without bread. I would die" Me (deadpans): "I will die if I eat bread." Them: "Oh, go to the natural food store. Organic is good." Me: "Organic wheat is still wheat." A manager of a restaurant: "Oh, the pizza will be fine. It's the stromboli you can't have because we add wheat germ to it. But the pizza dough is just from flour... -
ARCHIVED Igg Testing For Food Intolerances
happygirl replied to covsooze's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I don't have any advice, but the companies that I know of include: enterolab (gluten, soy, eggs, casein, yeast) optimum health -which used to be York Labs- (96 foods) Lame Advertisement (a variety of tests, including food and chemical sensitivity) I'm sure there are more, those are just the ones I know of. -
ARCHIVED Unsure Of How To Proceed--please Help!
happygirl replied to AliceW's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Taylor, Extremely well said! You are right, the diet and eating out is a challenge...but, again- you are right - all challenges can be overcome so that we can live 'relatively' normal lives. Welcome to the board (although a bit belated!) ....we are happy to have you here. Laura -
ARCHIVED Arguing With One Another On Posts!?
happygirl replied to chgomom's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I actually must say, I thought in the past week or so, the board had been getting along pretty well, with a renewed sense of purpose: helping newbies (which is a main purpose of this site), providing support to others (and support means personal viewpoints AND research articles), and generally, having a good time in the midst of this strange disease... -
ARCHIVED Unsure Of How To Proceed--please Help!
happygirl replied to AliceW's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hey Alice, I'm happy my thoughts helped...it certainly is overwhelming. I would tell your doctor that you are having GI problems and would like him to run the blood panel. He might hem and haw, but TELL him, not ask him (i.e., I want the test run!). Then, say, I want to make sure that these tests are run and show him your sheet. This blood... -
ARCHIVED Can You Guys Believe....fish Food?
happygirl replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Our cat food has gluten in it...I feed them, wash hands thoroughly, and dry. Its up to you how comfortable you feel (gloves vs. no gloves). -
ARCHIVED Just Got Diagnosed With Fibromyalgia
happygirl replied to mythreesuns's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Agreed....just trying to differentiate that we recognize the difference between an allergy (histamine reaction) and intolerance (various symptoms) (the difference between a gluten allergy vs. a gluten intolerance, etc) -
ARCHIVED The Genetics Of It All
happygirl replied to heathen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The two officially recognized/identified Celiac genes are HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8. Over 90% (and it may be higher than that...more like 95/98 percent) of Celiacs have one or both of these genes. However, between 30-40% of the American population has one or both of these genes, so JUST having the genes does not mean you have it. Dr. Fasano explains it as pepole... -
ARCHIVED Just Got Diagnosed With Fibromyalgia
happygirl replied to mythreesuns's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Mike, I also suggest that you read the latest book by Dr. Peter Green, a leading Celiac physician and researcher at Columbia University. His book is Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic. Please do not insult the Celiacs on this board that are still having health problems. Celiac is not the cure all for some of us. We can only wish that it was and search... -
Unless you have anaphylactic reactions to gluten and casein (which would be more of an allergy than Celiac/intolerance), you might not need one. Some people with intolerances do get them though, esp if thy are corn intolerant (because IVs have corn derivatives). However, I would say the vast majority of people on a gluten-free/cf diet do NOT have medic...

ARCHIVED Newbie And Questions
happygirl replied to *Donna*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hey Donna, Isn't this frustrating?! Anyways, we are happy you found us and hope that we can help you out with any questions, that will help lead you to better health. I would try calling again next week (Tuesday?) ... if the results are in, the nurse should be able to give you the results. When she does, make sure you write down each test, your score...
