ARCHIVED Ate Gluten And....nothing Happened? Totally Confused
nvsmom replied to Shelsi's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My guess (this is entirely a guess) is that she doesn't have the same damage and irritation in her gut as before so the reaction was not as strong (or noticeable). Another guess is that the way she reacts has changed over the years and you haven't recognized the reaction for what it is. It could bother her skin, give her mouth sores, a headache, make... -
ARCHIVED Are Celiacs Only At Risk Of Related Disorders If The Celiac Was Not Diagnosed/is Not Treated?
nvsmom replied to L's Mom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm not sure about this, so my response is partially a guess... When someone has an autoimmune disease, their body has started targeting parts of itself as a foreign object; doctors aren't sure yet why that happens so unfortunately it can happen again. People with one autoimmune disease are more likely to get another than some one else, even if it is... -
ARCHIVED Help! So Many Symptoms, Gluten-Free Not Helping...
nvsmom replied to lil'chefy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think the only celiac (or Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance - NCGI) symptom that you don't have is the stomach aches... You've had a tough road lately. I think that if you you have DH, then you have celiac. Celiac disease does not always attack the gut (so a negative endoscopy would result), sometimes it goes after skin (DH), organs (besides skin), nerves... -
ARCHIVED Do I Need To Be Re-Tested?
nvsmom replied to Becca7768's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think the only tests she missed, as Ninja said, was the ttg IgA and ttg IgG; the serum IgG test was just to ensure you are not deficient in those so your other tests will be accurate. As of now, it appears that you are not a celiac but there is a 25% false negative rate (approximately) with the blood tests so there is a chance you are in that minority... -
ARCHIVED Test Results And Ranges
nvsmom replied to Jonoh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It was at least a week for me too. Hang in there. I believe my ttg IgA test had a 0-20 range too, anything above 20 was positive. Did the doctor check your total serum IgA too? That's the test to make sure you have enough IgA so your test could show an elevated ttg IgA (if you have it). Use this time to eat your favourite "gluteny" snacks and finish... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Lupus Relationship And Possible Mimickers
nvsmom replied to Jen-1984's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Interesting links. I'm glad you posted them. I suspect SLE could be a possibility for me, and I am waiting (and waiting) to see a rhuemy about it. I did not have a positive dsDNA, or any other antiautobodies that are normally screened for lupus. My only blood work was positive ANA titres (1:160) years ago but my recent one was considered negative... -
Do you know your lab's ranges? A TSH of 2.28 is in the middle of my lab's range (0.2-6.0) but is on the high end if the range is 0.2-2.5... The ranges make a difference. That's good the doctor is looking into rheumatic diseases too. Good luck with the tests.

ARCHIVED My 12 Yr Old Son Has Glutant Intolerant Symptoms But Diagnosed Psychological.
nvsmom replied to Sunflower23's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Homeschooling might be a good idea... some time to deschool (regain interest in learning without authoritive/parental pressure) might make a big difference. I know many families who have gone this route. we homeschool too. -
ARCHIVED Finally!
nvsmom replied to daytime10's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree! many times western medicine just seems to put adrug band-aid onto a symptoms and don't even address the cause... I think it's a very backwards system myself. I hope you continue to feel better. -
ARCHIVED Autoimmune Disease Comorbidities
nvsmom replied to gkygrl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It seems to be especially common amoungst those of us celiacs who lived undiagnosed, and therefore untreated, for many years (this is just a personal observation though). I know that the inflammation from gluten can exasperate other autoimmune disorders, I'm not sure if or how it actually triggers them to start. As far as I can tell, I've had celiac my... -
ARCHIVED Got Results From Last Exam Now Worried&confused!
nvsmom replied to Tiredsean's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
'Wolf is right about the NCGI (in my opinion). It is much much more common that celiac and sufferer's don't have the intestinal damage so unlike those with celiac, they often have normal vitamin and mineral levels (there are exceptions - I'm one in fact) and they don't have the low cholesterol levels that many celiacs have. Most of your tests look really... -
ARCHIVED The Pieces Dont Fit- Help!
nvsmom replied to kvtlove's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good luck with the gluten-free diet. Be sure to give it a few months; I'm still noticing improvements after 6 months, and things like my migraines took a few weeks to go away. I would like to encourage you to get the full thyroid testing done too. Your symptoms scream hypothyroid. I am hypothyroid, but my TPO Ab was "normal"... it was 33.8 and the range... -
Crappy. I hope it takes a hike soon and leaves you alone so you can enjoy your weekend, Feel better.

Yah, I'm glad I was diagnosed when gluten-free and low carbs is the trendy way to eat. I can't imagnie trying to eat gluten-free during the 80's and 90's when high carb, whole grains and low fat was the way to go... At least now I can find alternative flours or the occassional premade treat. The trendiness will fade in a few years but hopefully the...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Cholesterol Is Still Too Low.
nvsmom replied to c.moriel's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I posted something similar to this a week ago. I have low cholesterol (not as low as yours!) which is odd because my hypothyroidism causes high cholesterol... I guess in the celiac-hypothyroidism cholesterol battle, celiac wins. LOL It sounds like cholesterol often stays low in celiacs. I've read the HDL will often rise a bit but that's it. -
ARCHIVED Hypothyroid And Celiac Link
nvsmom replied to Tiredsean's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Like jen said, borderline (subclinical) hypothyroidism is hard to detect for doctors to admit that it's there. I was hypo for well over a decade but I didn't request my lab results or educate myself, so I was just taking my doctor's word for it that i was normal... and most doctors live and die by that TSH test, which is a pituitary hormone anyway! Make... -
ARCHIVED Need School Lunch Ideas
nvsmom replied to Worried mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My boys don't pack lunches often but when they do it is either leftovers, or sandwiches (deconstructed) or nibbling food. A typical lunch (plus snacks for the day) are: fruit and veggie smoothie with protein powder and hemp seed; nuts or (sunflower or pumpkin) seeds, fruits (whole, pureed and/ or dried), yogurt (milk or coconut), dry cereal (Chex or... -
ARCHIVED My 8 Year Old Symptoms, Testing, Needs Advice
nvsmom replied to Worried mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sorry about the candy topic.... Four weeks is not a very long time to go gluten-free. Some go through a withdrawl for the first few weeks which exasperates fatigue and moodiness, can cause stomach upset and headaches; for some, it seems to get worse before it gets better. I personally am still noticing new relief to some symptoms after eating... -
ARCHIVED New And Kinda Confused
nvsmom replied to ebradford's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I met a celiac once whose only symptom was severe throat and mouth ulcers... celiac can affect almost anything, even brain and skin. Good luck with the testing. I hope you get some clear and definitive results. If you are unsure of what the results mean, bring them here. There are a few veterens around here with a wealth of information. And good... -
ARCHIVED Nervous About Results
nvsmom replied to DGIRL's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Are you done your testing? I'm assuming they tested ttg IgA and IgG, EMA IgA, total serum IgA, and DGP IgA and IgG; if so then you are in the clear to start on the gluten-free diet. You might want to use this time to start switching out your pantry and finishing off a few gluteny favorites while waiting for results. This way when you get your results, you... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Figure Out If My Daughter Should Have Further Testing
nvsmom replied to lisaberkow's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think if I was in your shoes, I would consider making her gluten-free too. You could pursue and endoscopy but what if the damage is patchy because she is so young and they miss it? She'll continue eating food that is damaging her. If she goes gluten-free, you've got it covered and she'll be healthy. Even if the doctor is right, and she is not a celiac... -
I remember going to the doctor at around 7 or 8 because of my stomach aches. I was told that I'm "just one of those people who have stomach aches after I ate" and ran with that for the next 30 years. The only reason I revisited it was because my son was starting to get stomach aches and did my research as to what coule be causing his pain and found that...

ARCHIVED Dr. Stunned By My Results :)
nvsmom replied to Ann1231's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's great that your liver responded so well... and so quickly!! I hope you continue to feel better. -
ARCHIVED This Is Getting Old, How Long Did It Take For Your Diagnosis
nvsmom replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with the others that it's time to start the gluten-free diet. It is entirely possible that you are a non-celiac gluten intolerant person, but with your history, I'd guess celiac. Besides, a gluten-free trial is starting to be recommended for sufferers of other autoimmune disease (like lupus) because it often helps. Remember those first few weeks... -
ARCHIVED New And Upset After First Appointment
nvsmom replied to EmmKat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry that you've been so unwell. I'm one who did the Biocard and I had a very weak positive on their ttg IgA test. That was backed up by a doctor ordered test (in Alberta... where they\ll run about half the celiac panel) so it worked for me. I know of another lady who had a positive biocard test but negative doctor ordered lab work though so it's...
