ARCHIVED Help With Lab Result Interpretation
nvsmom replied to cwredden's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The only test you did that tests for celiac (as far as I can tell) is your anti-gliadin IgA whish is positive at 13. As you said, your next step is to try blood testing. The most common tests are: ttg IgA and IgG EMA IgA total serum IgA DGP IgA and IgG I'm not sure how accurate the enterolab tests are (did not do them) but I have heard they tend...- 5 replies

ARCHIVED Gluten Is Ruining My Life
nvsmom replied to elii9's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I felt very unhappy my first few weeks gluten-free. I had headaches and was tired and my mood was very bad. I believe it was some type of withdrawl because it did pass eventually. Celiac can affect your mood and cause depression. You may need to eat gluten-free for a few months to see an improvement in that area. I have been eating gluten-free for 6 months... -
ARCHIVED Dgp Question....
nvsmom replied to roomorganizing's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was diagnosed with just blood work so I'm biased on simply accepting a positive blood test as indicating celiac. Those DGP tests are fairly specific to celiac disease as far as I know. If the doctor is implying that her disease hasn't progressed much yet, then great! Although I have no idea how he can tell that from the blood work.... either way, she... -
Those first couple of weeks were hard on me too. I felt really poorly, tired and cranky, and I had a migraine that lasted over a week. Hang in there and you'll probably feel better soon. Good luck!

ARCHIVED Daughter Diagnosed With Rheumatoid Arthritis
nvsmom replied to cap6's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry to hear of your daughter's diagnosis. I know there is a link between many autoimmune disorders and celiac (and Hashimotos especially) but I don't have any stats to quote for you. I do have one cousin who is celiac and her brother has RA. Based on what I know of his disease, if your daughter has an active form of the disease, she should probably... -
I have a bit less bloating and cramps. My greatest improvement was in the headaches; I used to get a migraine for a week. Since going gluten-free I have had a two day headache for pms once.

ARCHIVED Symptoms Similar To Celiac Disease
nvsmom replied to uhs514's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Evenings were definitely the worst time for symptoms; I would get more pregnant looking as the day wore on. LOL Joint pain and stiffness was a big one for me, and it's finally STARTING to improve after 6 months on the diet. That symptom takes a while to go for many people, so be patient once you go gluten-free. Good luck with your testing! -
ARCHIVED Son Will Be Tested After He Is Back On The Gluten
nvsmom replied to Happyw5's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with Neroli. Good luck to him; I hope his gluten trial goes smoothly! -
ARCHIVED Are There Any Other Tests?
nvsmom replied to Worried mommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I believe some have had tests done through Enterolab such as stool tests. I have never used them, or looked into them, but some people around here seem to have been happy with their product. It could be that your 8 yo is a non-celiac gluten intolerant. Those with NCGI have pretty much all the same nasty symptoms as a celiac, just minus the damage to the... -
ARCHIVED My 8 Year Old Symptoms, Testing, Needs Advice
nvsmom replied to Worried mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I haven't had a shopping trip to Montana since the 80's! LOL I'm always so jealous of how much cheaper everything is down there; from books to food, to clothes to cars to electronics... I know many people who order stuff delivered to an American friend who then ships it up here to save a bundle. Even when our dollar is on par, we spend a good 25% more..... -
ARCHIVED Been 2 Years And Still Coping
nvsmom replied to rebeccanicole88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Here's another microwaveable bun recipe: We generally substitute coconut flour for almond flour due to allergies. I make a batch of the mix and keep it in a fridge. Just grease a bowl, crack an egg, add 1/4 c of mix and nuke it for 90 seconds. We like to give it a light toasting afterwards too. For a cupcake, add vanilla, extra sugar and some... -
Poor girl. I get the same stomach pain from dairy as I do from gluten (minus the bloat and headache) so I agree with Karen's suggestion to cut all milk consumption. It can't hurt; drinking a cow's breast milk probably isn't really a natural thing for humans to do anyway. If you are worried about calcium, just add a supplement; calcium isn't easily...

ARCHIVED Really Torn About The Testing Process For Son - Please Weigh In!
nvsmom replied to slee11211's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If your son fears needles, perhaps using a distraction, like "Buzzy" could help. Open Original Shared Link I think its a good idea to get blood tests done. It's not overly invasive (not ideal I know) but it could give you an idea if he has an autoimmune disorder, and if so, then you can be on the look out for other autoimmune disorders since he has a ... -

nvsmom replied to Worried mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, I'm in Canada. Up here Smarties are candy coated chocolates with a hard shell of varoius colours, a lot like M&M's (I liked that joke BTW ). They have Wheat Starch on the ingredient list and Wheat is listed as an allergen at the bottom of the ingredients. (we have a law that all major allergens like soy, wheat, milk, eggs, nuts and mustard must... -
ARCHIVED Confused...hurting...
nvsmom replied to Deezel52's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with Ravenwood, see your GP and get tested right away. The blood tests are a quick and easy thing. The most common celiac tests are: TTG IgA and IgG EMA Iga total serum IgA DGP IgA and IgG The first two tests are the most common. The third test is not actually a celiac test but it checks whether you have enough IgA to register a positve... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free For...3 Days. Help!
nvsmom replied to Vinturi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
(hugs) Hang in there. Those first few weeks are tough. I felt very tired and grumpy for a while. It was like pms X10. It definitely is harder to mourn the loss of a previous way of eating and make that extra effort to eat in a new way when your body is making you feel bad. It will slowly get easier and your body will regain health. Best wishes. -
Beachbirdie is completely correct. I am almost positive that I've had thyroid issues for 15 years but the doctors would just check my TSH, which was a high normal or just above the range, and tell me I was normal.... I accepted that and didn't ask to see the specific lab results; that was a HUGE mistake on my part. My doctor finally "found" a thyroid problem...

It takes the body a long while for some to get feeling better, you could be one of those. With the hot and hot symptoms, it sounds like a flu to me. Are you coming down with something? From my own personal experience, I know those with Hashimoto's can go hot and cold and get anxious if they swing from hypo to hyperthyroidism as the autoimmune attack...

ARCHIVED Stressed Out--What Do I Do Next?
nvsmom replied to chickpea77's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My kids tested negative but I took them off gluten anyways. 2/3 of them have shown some real health improvements on a gluten-free diet. I guess I figure, what could it hurt? They now eat more whole foods and have all grown quite a bit since going gluten-free. It's an inconvenience for me as I have to pack their food everywhere we go, but they feel better... -
ARCHIVED Hypocholesterolemia - A.k.a. Really Low Cholesterol
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've had glimpses of energy over the last fe weeks; I think I'm getting my levels close to where they should be. I am pretty sure I've never been hyper, I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Those hyper symptoms sound nasty. I eat fish a couple of times a week but I'm on the Canadian prairies so fresh fish is expensive... and not really that fresh... -

My 5 year old will be jealous, ours definitely have gluten, I've checked a few times since the summer. Wierd. -
ARCHIVED Hypocholesterolemia - A.k.a. Really Low Cholesterol
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Whoa, that is low! LOL I see it did go up a bit over time but not much, eh? I'm curious if my thyroid meds will throw me hyper once I start to heal... I've tended towards the "slug" range for thyroid issues so going hyper would be a switch. I've heard it's connected because we don't absorb fats... It is a nice bonus (if it's healthy) since... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Pen/email Pal For My Daughter (11 1/2) With Celiacs.
nvsmom replied to Celiacmomj9's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Is there a celiac support group in your area? They sometimes offer get togethers for kids or teens; I know the one in my city has a couple of teen parties and a week long summer camp just outside of town. Contacting your local support group might be a good way to find other kids. I'm afraid I won't volunteer my boys as pen pals. They are a bit younger... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Mostly Asymptomatic
nvsmom replied to EstherRB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your numbers and symptoms are very similar to mine, except I got stomach aches too; otherwise the joint pain, bloating, and menstral issues can often be attributed to celiac... my headaches and thinning hair were linked too. The only symptom you have that I don't is problems with the TMJ but there are others around here with jaw pain too. My celiac tests... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed. How Long Till She Feels Better?
nvsmom replied to Denine's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sorry that she has been so unwell. That's hard on a family. Many of us went through a withdrawl for the first few weeks where we actually felt a bit worse... I know you didn't want to hear that. I personally had a headache that lasted well over a week, and it was a doozey. I was also very tired and incredibly cranky; I was not at my mommy best for...
