  1. Thanks for the reply, Gemini. My next thyroid labs will be TSH, T4, and T3. He didn't write on the word free so I'm assuming it will be totals. I had to argue to get a T3 test of any sort. My latest batch of recurring symptoms started very shortly after I began taking 50mcg of synthroid, so I don't know how related to Hashi's it is. The hair...
  2. Thanks so much for your reply! Part of the reason I doubt it is thyroid related is because my symptoms suddenly occurred about one week after starting synthroid. That seems kind of funny to me; almost like it kicked off the symptoms. It last happened in June (when I felt mildly ill) but it was in my shoulder (that never left) but I can't think of...
  3. Very dry skin can sometimes be hypothyroid related; my skin is always incredibly dry and flakes off unless I scrub it every day. Many people seem to develop (or recognize) Hashimoto's disease at the onset of menopause. You could have your TSH and TPOAb's checked. SLE often causes rashes (malar or discoid) on the face. You could compare to those too...
  4. I found out I've been living as an undiagnosed celiac my entire life just this past summer. On the advice of you helpful people of this forum, I asked for vitamin level tests and a TSH because my energy can get quite low and my hair loss keeps advancing. From those tests, I found my vitamin levels are great but my TSH was high; I followed that up with a...
  5. I was an undiagnosed celiac until I was 38 so I was eating gluten while pg with my children. My oldest son, we are just now starting to realize, seems to have a problem with milk. He told me he sometimes gets stomachaches after drinking milk, and often gets headaches. He has a few other health problems which has prompted me to start him gluten-free even...
  6. There is always the biocard home test that you could order. It is a ttg Iga test. When I saw my doctor about celiac, I came in carrying my positive biocard test and it was no problem (I am in Alberta).
  7. I've had sciatic pain for almost 20 years but I doubt it is caused by celiac. Celiac disease might exacerbate it but I don't think it caused it... I don't know. I do know my back gets worse with stress, menstration, and pregnancy. I've been gluten-free for 3months and have not yet noticed any difference.
  8. No I haven't. I was one who got stomachaches from gluten, but my doctor dismissed it when I was a child and I trusted him and didn't revisit that issue. 30 odd years later or eating gluten, I now have 2 or 3 other autoimmune diseases which I might not have developed if I hadn't kept my body inflamed by eating gluten. I want to heal so I don't end up with...
  9. It really depends on the doctor...I was never biopsied either. Her numbers are quite high, and we know it is genetically linked so with her dad having it, I on't see a need. She has celiac. ((Hugs)) to you mom. That's great you had her checked, you have probably saved her many complications and health problems that could have arisen had she continued...
  10. Sorry to hear of your diagnosis but I hope you are able to feel and see many improvements once you've been on the diet for some time. Celiac support groups are a good way to meet people and find resources in your area. The first few shopping trips are tricky and expensive as you replace foods that have gluten in them (like soy sauce, teriyaki...
  11. I am so glad you've started her on a gluten-free diet. A positive blood test means she is celiac, so many doctors seem to forget that! I don.t have advice on a bruised looking stomach except to guess that is how it is presenting in her. I really don't know. Hopefully it will disappear over time with th gluten-free diet. You might want to recheck her...
  12. ((hugs)). I am sorry you are having such a rough go. I too think you should go back to the doctor and look for other things... Other autoimmune diseases especially. Hypothyroidism is one but there are others that can affect your mood energy and hair... I think the majority of AI's cause those problems. I hope you feel better soon.
  13. It could be worth checking out with a GI. Ask for a full celiac panel. TTY IgA and EMA are the most specific an sensitive for celiac, but there are other tests too. It is possible the blood was from something harmless, but irritating, like hemorrhoids. It is good to check it out though. Good luck. I hope you feel better.
  14. I went decades untreated because I thought how I felt was normal for me. I thought most people had complaints too. I think many people don't change because "they have been getting along just fine so far"....At least that is how I thought. Change is hard. Harder for some than others.
  15. I'm sorry your son has tested positive. But it's great you caught it so young. As I see it, a positive test, whether it's a biopsy OR blood test, means he is a celiac. I wouldn't even bother with genetic testing. His dad and sister have it and there is a genetic link; I think that genetic test is only useful for kids who are showing symptoms but...
  16. You've had a tough time. (hugs) Your symptoms could be celiac, but as you know they could also be linked to other autimmune diseases like Hashimotos, UCTD, and Lupus. I had many of your symptoms... actually all of them except for the vitamin deficiencies and the eyelash (that sounds allergy related to me), plus a few others. I too gave up on nail...
  17. My energy never improved either but it turns out I'm hypothyroid too (possible other AI). Perhaps get your TSH and T4 levels checked. Best wishes. I hope you feel better soon.
  18. I don't know... I could be enough. It's a hard call when you have silent celiac to ensure you are contaminating your food. If you are sure that your vitamins, medications, sauces (soy, wochestershire, teriyaki, barbque) crackers and cereals are all gluten-free then you are probably doing enough. I would check your iron levels and celiac blood panels...
  19. I read that celiac can trigger other AI's into activity in those poeple who are predisposed to having them. The constant state of inflammation places a great a deal of stress on our bodies and adreanl gland, and that can kick other diseases into gear. I am fairly certain I had untreated celiac my entire life. I developed ITP in my late teens as well...
  20. (((HUGS)))
  21. I diagnosed myself with a Biocard test (which tests ttg IgA) and had a very faint positive; in a dimly lighted room you could barely see the line. When the doctor had my ttg IgA tested it went above their normal high limits so I believe the Biocard tests are fairly reliable. But if you are going gluten-lite, that can affect your results and give false negatives...
  22. I made my family go gluten-free. It was too much worry for me to keep bread and flour in the house. Plus i believe that the wheat we consume today is not good for them anyways. There are a lot of gluten-free baking books and recipes out there that make really nice products. Even my pickiest eaters (elementary aged boys) are slowly coming around. My...
  23. I've heard, although I am far from an expert, that those with lupus and other rheumatic AI's should avoid the flu shot. I can't remember if it's because it gets your immune system going too much and causes a flare or what. Sort of like the fact that rheumatic AI sufferers are told not to consume garlic, echinacea, and melatonin because it boosts the immune...
  24. I would say, with your family history, that you probably have celiac disease, especially if you are having symptoms. the tests that MitziG mentioned will give you more information. Good luck with the tests and I hope you feel better soon.
  25. if she has only had symptoms for three days, I don't think it is a strong indicator. she certainly could be celiac, but if it's as new as it sounds, she may not even test positive for celiac even if she is...especially since she is eating gluten light. it's probably worth mentioning to her so she can keep an eye on it in case symptoms persist. it could...
