  1. Isn't it exciting to find gluten-free food in the grocery store!!! I always have to just "look" at the gluten-free section even if I'm not buying anything. You never know they might be carrying something new. I'm pretty lucky in that alot of stores around me carry gluten-free foods plus theres one store that is pretty much ALL gluten-free....they...
  2. Which came first? Its impossible to know for sure. Leaky gut can be caused by a wide range of things...not just gluten. Gluten intolerance can be the cause or the effect. I would recommend reading Dangerous Grains. It can probably answer alot of questions you might have as far as that goes.
  3. I've never baked in my life until last week and now I'm loving all my little "creations". Surprisingly, everything's turning out really good. I'm not picky at all so I'm not the best critic but everyone else seems to like my baking too. I think they seriously like the stuff...it actually gets gobbled up. Today I'm starting my elimination diet and I...
  4. Was that the first time you drank any alcohol since going gluten-free? I cant drink most alcohols and I think its because I'm sensitive to salicylates but I get a reaction similar to that just from eating some grapes so I'm sure champagne would really mess me up.
  5. I can't believe they would not let you wear a mask! Is this the same place that made you work in the bakery even though you were getting sick? Thats crazy. Isn't there some law against that? I think if you need to wear a mask then they cant let you go over it. Am I wrong?
  6. Thanks for all the info Mariann. I did visit all those sites already. I pretty much devoured all the info. I could find the first night I read about salicylates. I'm sorry to hear about your son. If I remember correctly I think I have the same or similar genes as him...apparantly we share some of the same problems too. I don't know how I...
  7. Tim, Everything you listed I also have bad reactions to...especially grapes and any fruit juice. I couldnt figure out for the life of me why all fruit juices bothered me so much...also wine. I was trying to eat as healthy as possible but in doing so I was eating everything high in salicylates. Cocoa is low in salicylates but its high in amines. I'm still...
  8. Ursula, From all I've read buckwheat is suppossed to be low in salicylates so maybe you are reacting to something else or maybe you're just sensitive to buckwheat?
  9. I tried everything from Levothroid to Armour to Levoxyl to combination Cytomel/Levothroid and finally back to Armour. I actually never felt good on any of the meds because it was my diet causing the symptoms and everything was finally improved with dietary changes. I spent 2 years adjusting meds and doses with no improvement...now I'm happy to stay on Armour...

  11. Ursula, I came accross that info about fibro and guaifenesin while researching salicylates. Sounds a little like quackery to me too. I dont have fibro. but seem to just be intolerant of both salicylates and amines. I printed that list of 1000 ingredients to avoid. I found it really hard to find cosmetics free of salicylates...especially lipstick. I spent...
  12. Rice Krispies are not gluten free. The only gluten-free mainstream cereals are Cocoa Pebbles & Fruity Pebbles.

I've never had any pop-ups on this forum either.
  14. I'm discovering that I get migraines if I eat cheese or chocolate. I havent had a migraine in a long time but this week I had one because I tried to add those back into my diet. Pre-gluten-free I was having migraines every day for about 6 months. It was miserable.
  15. You could still carry the gene even if your sister doesnt have it. Also a small number of proven Celiacs have neither of the main Celiac genes. Not having the gene doesnt necessarily mean you you have a 100% chance of never getting celiac disease. There are other genes involved and not all genes have been identified yet. Do you get symptoms from consuming...
  16. Congratulations!! I'm glad I read your post. I bought the carob powder and wanted to have it for christmas night. I did notice it didnt have the gluten-free label so I was confused as to why its not made on the gluten-free line. Isnt carob naturally gluten-free? Why would they package it with the non-gluten-free stuff? Anyway, at the last minute I decided...
  17. No, in my opinion the skin test wont show you an intolerance or a sensitivity....just an allergy. They are not the same. Allergy symptoms are immediate whereas the others can be delayed up to 72 hours.
  18. All I can say is that I'm sure your doctor is great in his field. He has no experience with regards to leaky gut because traditional doctors do not study this. Almost all traditional doctors will tell you the same thing...."word for word". I've heard the speech more than once myself....its almost like they all took the same class on what to say about leaky...
  19. I've been using Tom's of Maine the last couple years because I noticed burning around my mouth with the other brands...also I stopped using mouthwash a long time ago for the same reason. Now that I've found out about salicylates I'm using baking powder for now. I've known people to use baking powder instead of toothpaste for whatever reason. If it turns out...
  20. I dont know of any books but I do have some links. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link I just learned of this Tuesday night so today's only my second day on the diet. I dont expect to know if its working for at least 2 weeks. I ate tons of the wrong...
  21. Salicylates are in fruits, vegetables, food additives, artificial colors, preservatives, cocoa, nuts, perfumes, cosmetics, etc.. Its alot to learn (like going gluten-free)...some fruits and veggies are low in salicylates and others are very high. I seem to react to everything that is very high in salicylates. Grapes, wine, dried fruits, beer, all chewing...
  22. I read about that also. I dont have fibro but I was reading how after eliminating gluten and dairy...if symptoms persist a low saclicylate diet might be helpful. After looking over the lists it seems like the diet is even harder than gluten-free. One interesting thing that I read stated that some people who are gluten-free/cf only get completely better...
  23. Since going gluten-free I still react to all sorts of different foods and perfumes. I could never figure anything out. Most of my symptoms went away after going gluten-free but I still have some facial swelling and burning sensations on my face, eyes and mouth. Also still have some muscle and joint pains. I came across Salicylate sensitivity and it just so...
  24. My doctor gave me a handout with info. about gluten intolerance/celiac. This is part of what was on there. He also said this is true whether the person has Celiac or non-celic gluten sensitivity. He said the symptoms can be the same for both but only Celiac results in the destruction of the villi and both conditions require strict gluten-free diet...
  25. I take them always...even with snacks.
