  1. I adore that magazine and have been subscriber since the first issue! They reviewed rice and corn pastas when they did their pasta "taste test" several issues ago. It's just a sidebar in the April issue (says, "Three not quite-classic mac-and-cheese options) and Annie's is the only gluten-free one they mention. R.S. says: "Though it tastes more buttery...
  2. Sorry, didn't see the original post. I contacted Detour a couple months ago and they said NONE of their protein bars are gluten-free. I've had a problem with TJ's list in the past - they had some protein bars listed as gluten-free that blatantly listed "barley malt" in the ingredients! If you need any other protein bar recommendations let me know....
  3. Oh boy, you're testing my (limited) product knowledge! I actually haven't started the job yet (building is still under construction, it opens in the beginning of April). BUT, from what I know of flourless chocolate cakes though, its really just chocolate, eggs, sugar, and butter (mass quantities of all). So if you can have butter, I would THINK you would...
  4. I do not suffer from DH, but it seems that you've gotten good advice from some others here. However, I really think that the issue of your friend's depression needs to be addressed. If he is talking about not wanting to live like this, I would be concerned. That is a lot of responsibility for you, as a friend, to bear - maybe he should see a psychiatrist...
  5. Is this the March or April issue? - Lauren
  6. Wow, that is awesome! I wonder if they make vegetarian ones? (says the 24 year old who is still a kid at heart) - Lauren
  7. Does anyone know if Smart Balance mayo is gluten-free? I bought some w/o thinking. Thanks. - Lauren
  8. I've lived in (and now just outside) philly for almost 2 years and haven't had much luck with restaurants. Mr.Ritts is a must though, if you're in that area. Sorry I couldn't be of more help -Lauren
  9. Hours are: Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursdays 9 -6; Fridays 9-8; and Saturdays 9-3 I've never been so I can't say how to get there, do you use Mapquest? The e-mail I have says that they ONLY carry gluten-free products. If someone goes, I want to know how the prices are! - Lauren
  10. Here's what I got from my support group: 20 South Baltimore Street, Dillsburg, PA phone: 717-432-5100 Hope that helps, I'll definitely check it out next time I go "home" - Lauren
  11. Yay for another good Outback experience! I think that more often than it being a case of "germs" or uncleanliness, people get sick after going out to eat because the food is generally richer than what we eat at home. Why does it taste so good- because most restaurants use more butter, etc. that we might not use when cooking for ourselves. Just my thought...

    ARCHIVED To Life

Sad news... As part of Too Life's e-mail list, I received an e-mail yesterday that they are selling the store. Ideally they want to sell it to someone who would keep it a gluten-free cafe, but who knows. sooo... anyone wanna go in with me and try to buy the place?? Seriously, the owners were so nice, it's really too bad. - Lauren
  13. Ahhh, isn't that the worst? There were these cute little girls outside the grocery store the other day selling girl scout cookies and I had to say "no." I didn't feel like getting into explanations they might not understand anyway. I really miss those cookies (mmm does anyone make a gluten-free thin mint??), but I think I felt even worse about having to say...
  14. PB is good - has calories, protein, healthy fat. Would she eat an apple with PB and raisins? Carrots, celery and PB? How about homemade trail mix -she can add whatever she wants (raisins, other dried fruits like mango or cranberries, gluten-free cereal, gluten-free pretzels, nuts, even M&Ms or marshmallows....) I know she doesn't have access to an...
  15. MallysMama, Thanks! The test actually wasn't bad at all. I've been speaking with the proprietor, and he's super nice. Hopefully the managers, etc. will be also. I have my BA in Rhetoric & Communications. I've worked in PR, but I really like the publishing industry, specifically magazines. So I'm going to grad school to get my masters...
  16. Well, I got a job at Outback haha. I go for the test tomorrow to see exactly what they want me to do, but the man who interviewed me said that I would be an "asset" to them as a person who has celiac disease, and I was impressed that he was aware that they have a gluten-free menu. So I go for the personality test/assessment tomorrow... I'll let you know how...
  17. Your weight naturally fluctuates day to day. For instance, one day you eat a lot of salty foods, your body will naturally retain water = the # on the scale goes up. I think most experts recommend weighing yourself once a week, as weighing yourself daily just isn't an accurate measure of how "well" you're eating/managing your weight. Just a thought! - Lauren
  18. I did a Bob & Ruth's trip to Italy and cruise of the Greek islands. It was beautiful, but expensive. If anyone wants to know more, feel free to PM me! - Lauren
  19. It would never even cross my mind as a problem.... I just recently got a tattoo and have had no problems whatsoever. That's just my experience though, I wouldn't worry about it - Lauren
  20. I don't care for Starbucks either. Their lattes, etc. are good, but I don't like their regular coffee at all (too bitter), and regular coffee is what I'm normally in the mood for. My favorite is Green Mountain coffee. All of their coffee, even the flavored ones, are gluten-free! They have flavors like "french toast," "dark chocolate raspberry," "cinnamon...
  21. Funny - there is an Outback opening literally within walking distance of my apartment (Deptford, NJ), and they have a "Now Hiring" sign. I was thinking of getting a part-time job while I continue in grad school, and I think that as a Celiac, maybe they would like having someone who truly understand what GLUTEN FREE means as part of their waitstaff. I would...
  22. I did (make a request) on a flight to Italy on US Air. The meal wasn't gluten-free at all. This was just this past Sept, but fortunately (since it was quite a long flight!) I had packed some snacks for myself. Luckily I didn't have high expectations for a gluten-free meal and so I came prepared! - Lauren
  23. The University of Chicago's Celiac program will send you a HUGE basket full of info and gluten-free food if you've recently been diagnosed with a biopsy. I forget the exact rules (maybe has to be within 6 months of diagnosis?), but I got one when I was first diagnosed and it was very helpful and best of all, free! - Lauren
  24. I love love love Whole Food's Own brand, 365, Honey Frosted Flakes cereal. Tastes just like Frosted Flakes and really satisfies my sweet tooth, for b-fast or a snack! The gluten-free Bakehouse has wonderful stuff as well. Good luck, and enjoy, Whole Foods is the best! - Lauren
  25. I was told this is a total "[Celiac] Urban Legend," so I wouldn't beat yourself up about it. That said, even though I'm confident it's safe I still don't lick the envelopes... call it paranoia! - Lauren
