ARCHIVED Anyone Else Loathe Jeans?
Chaff replied to GFreeMO's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I didn't wear jeans for years because of the bloating, so I disagree that the '80s was a great time for jeans. They always cut into me as a child. But the hip-hugger type is just fine. Of course, then you have to worry about underwear showing... -
ARCHIVED What Did You Have For Lunch Today?
Chaff replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Dirty rice (white rice and sausage), a cup of chicken broth, homemade pickles. It's not much, but it's totally safe for me to eat. Later I'll have a coconut Zing bar. -
ARCHIVED Very Nervous About Trying To Get Pregnant
Chaff replied to OleMissLass's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Wow, this is exactly what I've been thinking. I've had a miscarriage and an ectopic, and lots of "chemical" pregnancies since trying for a baby the past six years. Then I got diagnosed two months ago with celiac, which by then was a GREAT thing to hear, since up until that point all the testing had just shown "unexplained infertility." It's nice to have... -
I was training for an ultramarathon when I got diagnosed. I lost about 8 Lbs (I think all muscle) and am not just slightly underweight (18.5 BMI). My personal decision is to wait until 2 months gluten-free and then to maintain a healthy weight for at least two weeks before I start training again. I'm just ending the 2-month period, so it's all about gaining...

ARCHIVED Best Way To Train For Half Marathon?
Chaff replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Sports and Fitness
I also tend to do better with distance -- just easier to plan for, although just going out for a 45-minute run without pressure of being fast is also nice -- at least you know how long to set the playlist for. But I think if you're just training to participate and not to win, you can just design your own training program. If you increase total distance... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed - Dizzy - 7
Chaff replied to Rose74's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For me, this is a sign of malabsorbtion, which I think it just a temporary thing (as in a few months to a few years) related to leaky gut. I was having reactions to all kinds of foods I had thought were safe, that I had eaten for years -- simple things like eggs, which I'm not at all allergic to. Turns out that leaky gut leads to some malabsorbtion that won... -
I've been looking into thermal cooking, especially for breakfast, since I'm so picky about what I eat first thing in the morning. If you can eat instant oatmeal or if you like instant grits, you're probably fine for breakfast. But you can always carry along any grain you like (like quinoa, rice, or oatmeal) and put it overnight in a thermos with boiling...

ARCHIVED Hilton Head, Sc - Red Fish Restaurant Review
Chaff replied to li sha's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Sad to hear this, since I sometimes go to HH and it would be nice to have some gluten-free options there. Did you post this on Yelp? I've found restaurants negative reviews there very seriously. Were you glutened at all? Dairy in the potatoes is horrific -- I'd be sick for at least a day with that. And to have to pay to get sick, too!- 1 reply

ARCHIVED Just Stumped The Nutritionist
Chaff replied to Chaff's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks, everyone! You all are so nice. GFinDC and bartfull, I'm deeply offended you think I might eat something that isn't a nutrious, organic, whole food. Trust me, this is a very minimally processed, completely wholesome sausage. Less than five ingredients, no nitrates, and certified by two US celiac organizations. I was shocked, SHOCKED to see... -
ARCHIVED Elemental Diet And Leaky Gut?
Chaff replied to leo.the.bunny's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'd love to know more about this, too. I can't seem to eat much, and the docs here won't put me on an elemental diet because I'm in a US military medical system and they don't support it (the GI used the words "tip of the spear" twice to refer to the medical care available...apparently the elemental diets are far away from the tip). I tried two of the... -
ARCHIVED Just Stumped The Nutritionist
Chaff replied to Chaff's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Anything's possible, but I time my meals out so I can ID reactions -- they usually happen on a certain timeline (have to start within 1 hour of eating but can last 1-7 hours). The sausage did its worst and stopped before I ate anything else. Gluten, casein, and oatmeal are my only exceptions to the rule so far. I'm also getting clumsy suddenly. Not... -

Oh, dear. I had a Larabar an hour ago and now I have brain fog. Now I have to remove Larabars from my "totally safe" list. -
ARCHIVED 2Nd Opinion Help!
Chaff replied to runsuzannerun's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Nice to see another ultrarunner here! If you stick around on the boards, please keep us updated on how you're doing on the Sports and Fitness board. I'm having to take a break from training until I heal up. There are some good threads on gluten-free long-run fueling if you search the boards, too. Did you ever get the celiac blood panel done, too? I...- 6 replies

The Navy nutritionist at the Okinawa military hospital -- who herself has celiac -- was totally stumped by my leaky gut symptoms and inability to eat anything beyond ten foods. "I just keep thinking of solutions that include things you can't eat," she said after nearly an hour in her office. You and me both, sister. I just told her not to worry, I...

Good point. The other sources I read were probably wrong. As for being a redhead, I'm talking about true red hair: Open Original Shared Link
-
Even if the thing works, it just sounds...terrifying. A little too mad science for me, and you should see the pile of pills I'm taking now to heal up! OK, now that I read the original post again, it's so un-scientific it's funny: "Reprogram[ing] the immune system, changing the intestines"...heh. Does the end of "Braveheart" come to mind for anyone...
-
Yep, I'm also a redhead. Red hair is recessive, and so is celiac. I wonder if they're linked somehow in a way we haven't discovered yet. Or, as someoene suggested above, could just be the gene pool.

I tried Celiact this week. For two and a half days only -- and then I had to stop. It seemed like a great idea. It has a ton of stuff in it, all of which I was taking separately and some of which I had on order and didn't have access to. I don't have anywhere to buy gluten-free vitamins, since I live in Japan and they aren't very gluten-free-friendly...

ARCHIVED Ummmm...is This Normal For Starting Out Gluten Free?
Chaff replied to shellybean's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
IrishHeart, this is what I was hoping I could do, but it doesn't seem to be working. I have a huge bloated belly and C every day, gluten-free-foods (store-bought breads, etc.) are the only safe foods for me apart from avocadoes, tuna, and rice. I've tried eating all the other things people recommend, and they just make me sicker (severe stomach aches, heavy...- 14 replies

ARCHIVED "Super Sensitive" Celiacs.....
Chaff replied to jerseyangel's topic in Super Sensitive People
Thanks for reviving the thead -- I hadn't seen it before, and I scrolled through tons of pages and took some notes. Lots of useful information buried in here! -
That's helpful -- I also live in Japan, so sushi is everywhere. I suspect some chirashi on plain rice should be OK, like a maguro-don ordered without any sauces on top (Japanese mayo has something bad in it...I don't know what, but it's probably one of my million non-gluten food intolerances). For folks not in Japan, it's still worth knowing, as tomutomu...

ARCHIVED Ummmm...is This Normal For Starting Out Gluten Free?
Chaff replied to shellybean's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OH! I'm week 5 and I've been getting weird, off-cycle breast pain. Hello -- this sounds like hormones going wonky before settling into a new normal. Actually, now that you mention it, it is similar (in crazyness, not specific changes) to when I went off the pill. Everything was insane for weeks. Considering the connections between celiac and other body...- 14 replies

ARCHIVED Anyone With An Unsupportive Spouse / Family Members / Friends?
Chaff replied to Menqet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This hits the nail on the head for me -- that's exactly what I went through for most of my life, like clockwork, every afternoon. Anyway, I think the board tends to act protectively of disrespected celiacs, which is very sweet of everyone, but a little tricky when it's about someone you love. I hope your husband has started to learn a little bit about... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Want To Tell Your Friends And Family About Living Gluten Free?
Chaff replied to LisaDances's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hilarious. I wish I could wear a button saying something like this. Another message I'd like to send the world -- just because I can't eat gluten doesn't mean I can't also eat other things. Stop trying to offer me a panoply of other foods I also can't eat, and then requiring me to list out everything that's safe for me. It's the most boring conversation...
