Hello Texas and welcome to the board.
It takes time to heal, just as you have many years of discomfort and damage. Some see an immediate response to the diet and others like myself took several months.
The gluten free diet encompasses many things including wheat. Rye, Malt, Barley and most Oats all must be excluded from your diet.
The tricky part is that gluten is everywhere from lipstick, balms, lotions, shampoos, soy sauce and even some orange juices...places that you would never imagine.
You cannot heal unless you remove all sources of gluten. The learning curve is very steep, as others have said, but it is very doable.
Once you remove all the gluten from your diet, you will notice an improvement. But it takes patience and diligence.
Keep reading these posts, you'll learn more than anywhere or from any one.
Welcome to the Club!!
Edit: in addition, you might want to elliminate diary from your diet for a while.

Have a wonderful birthday, and tell us all about it!

Hey Miss Jessie,
Yup, it could be an issue. I had one doctor suggesting that. I have not gone there as of yet.
REALITY sucks, at least for the time being. Stress can do some mean things to youl
Thank you Carla and Jess and every one else.

I would have never thought the connection either, but where is the corn starch connection?

I can't find the gluten free menu online anywhere on McDonalds site. I found the old menu by googling, but the menu items have changed quite a bit since that menu was published. The newer menu items don't list the grilled chicken breast as gluten free as it contains hydrolized wheat gluten. Can anyone else find the gluten free menu on McD's website or have they now revoked it?
Angie, in my Truimph Dining Book 2006-07..it lists a www.mcdonalds.com or (877) MCD-FOOD (confirmed 11/28/05).
So there has not been a resent update unless found on line. Shame on them. Slackin burger boys. (not to be interpreted as sexist, shehhhh)

Your primary doctor can recommend a GI in your area for testing. It is easier to get into a GI's office with a doctor referral.
Just a word of advise, if testing is you avenue, it is recommended that a full gluten diet should to be continued for a more accurate testing response.
I would suggest that you husband get a full Celiac Blood Panel done, it can rule celiac in, but cannot rule it out. As well with a biopsy, it can rule celiac in, but not necessarily rule it out (biopsies tend to be hit or miss) The endoscopy and biopsy is/was considered the "gold standard" for testing. Now, perhaps among us, a dietary response is the best link between yes and no, regarding celiac.
Make sense?
Welcome to the board. There is lots of good information here that can help you along your way. Take some time to read here. You will learn more here that from many professionals.
I hope you find our answers..

For all those reading this thread, please keep in mind that it was begun in 2004 and so much has changed regarding product information.
For current confirmation regarding McD's gluten free products, please contact them at www.mcdonalds.com

Ok, well I guess I'll go there.......
Two or three summers ago we were looking at some land to build a house. I had on high-top work boots, socks and jeans and tromped through the property. I kept those clothes on all day and took a shower in the evening....
Two days later, I had 85, YES 85 redbug/or chigger bits in every place available. Misery for about a month until all those suckers died off. I killed those bad boys with nail polish remover.
This was about a year before I was diagnoes with Celiac via biopsy.
So, I know that the symptoms can be similar, but I am confirmed Celiac. Could Lyme be present as well. I know the answer, yes.

No, Carla. But, but yesterday early morning I did have some "intestinal distress". I made some gluten free crustless quiche a few days ago and I had some for dinner, lunch and breakfast.
It could be a dairy or casein overload.
The contacts being irritated and blurred vision and the shakes have been increasing a while before the quiche. I have been a little stress though, but not outwardly.
Don't know?

Hello all:
I have been gluten free and diary light for two years this August. So I have the diet fairly well managed.
My new development, currently is that my left arm tremors. I can hold a drink with ice in my left hand and I can hear the ice rattle in the glass. When I switch to my right hand, no movement and all it quiet.
I can stand on one leg on my left leg and cannot maintain my balance. I try the same on my right leg and no problem. I find it interesting that it is my left arm and left leg. My right side appear uninpared.
I eyesight has become increasingly blurry and uncomfortable, I have to remove my contacts by late afternoon and put on the glasses.
I have looked up somethings on the Internet as in Graves, Wilson's Disease and hyperthyroid and found a few similarities, but not the fit. It has been a year since I have had any blood work done, but it may be time for more.
Has anyone experiences these things and what direction do I need to go.
Thanks for you time.

I have gas, a Weber charcoal, and a cheap bullet smoker.I'd like to get a better smoke, but I still did 20 pounds of barbecue in it Friday using natural charcoal and apple wood.

Richard,
Save up for a "Green Egg" Smoker. They are very pricey, but well worth it and it will last a lifetime.
Cooking a whole salmon filet on a cedar plank..... don't get any better than that!! Yum!

Ok so I didn't check but we were out and about today and we went to Wendy's. My son ate some plain chicken and a few fries with ketsup. Now all afternoon he's complaining of a tummy ache. Do you think he got glutened or that dairy might have been there? I had the same exact thing (we shared) and I feel fine(However, I'm not sure if I react to gluten but I know I react to dairy/soy). While we were out we also had a Jamba juice peach one that is all fruit.
the only other food he had was a gluten-free waffle (from a vegan/gluten-free bakery) with syrup(Country Kitchen-Log Cabin) and some glutino pretzels.
* He did have a bowel this evening and told daddy my tummy's not hurting*(but he is just potty training and only 3)
So what do you think?

Chicken and fries are not on my list of safe products, but the above is confirmation.
Best thing is to call or e-mail the company and confirm for yourself and your familiy.

fine fine im working alot right now. on a 22 day strait currently no days off getten tired but making money so thats always good. just wish my hip was not brused and my gas would go away. if i could controle my stomich i would have final controle over my life again. but hey atleast rainbows are in my vision instead of clouds of grey. i got a sinuse infection im almost positive though. because of that head pain(pushing sensation) and my left ear keeps ringing/going randomly def
Yeah for you!!!! You have alot of people pulling for you here!. If you do have a sinus infection, you may need some antibiotics. Maybe some Vit-C many help you feel better, but maybe that's an old wives tale.
Until you tummy feels better stick to the basics.... Peanut butter and bananas or apples are really good.
The BRAT diet can help settle your stomach..Bananas, Rice, Apple Sauce and Tea.
After gluten free, as you know, many of us are more sensitive to things that have never bothered us before. Maybe the Arby's burger messed up you belly
Aside from you not feeling well in your head, I am so proud of you for getting things in order. AND STICKING WITH IT. Get yourself well, work hard and follow through with the GED program.
If good gluten free food is a concern.....well, we can be the welcome wagon................
If you commit to getting your GED and stay clean, my bet is that we can supply you with gluten free food while you are doing this. Up for a challenge????

also unrelated or i guess possible related. i brang back the dairy about 5 days ago now. and on that same day my left femur(not the one i had previusly fractured) is brused to the tuch. like i usualy lay on my left side when i sleep but i cant now because it hurts to put pressure on it in a very small spot. i never hit it against anything so im really confused its as if it is really brused but there is no visible bruse there. can a health condition cause this? or do i just have a brused bone for some reason?
also is it possible to be intolerent to beef? or atleast to cheap beef? my roommate likes to bring me home cooked burger pattys from burgerking so i can have some free food everyonce and a while but even just eating half of a patty gives me the worse bloating and gas and its horrific smelling. i used to be able to eat that type of food all the time without this happing? is it the greese in the beef (since well bk is very very greesy beef) or have i become intolerant to it?
Lister:
You need to do a food diary. Document everything that you eat. It will help you find the things that bother you. I know it may be a pain in the butt, but so helpful in many ways.
How are you doing with everything else? Only asking, cause I care.

Lisa - Continued prayers for Hazel's health and for support for both of you during this time of need.
Cindy
I am just overwhelmed by your thoughts, prayers and support. Where else could you find this among people you have never met!
From, what I thought, she was at the brink of death, the old girl has rallied. Maybe in the next few weeks she can come home, sit on her deck and look at the water and feed her ducks.
Her heart condition is very tenative and it will be day to day. Another issue is emminent because her heart is very sick. But home may be a good place to come.
You guys are, as alway, so wonderful!! Thanks again.

Ursa:
When the day comes, I am sure that it will be a beautiful event and all the issues today will be forgotten. You will be a beautiful mother of the bride. There is a silver lining in everything.
Enjoy the day.

I do have neur symptoms after the GI symptoms leave. Brain fog is pretty bad. I find myself sitting at a stop light waiting for the light to turn RED!!
I also find myself walking sideways down a sidewalk. (not a good discription, but defined effect on motor skills)
Some well balanced vitamines will help.

Has anyone ever cheated on this diet out of frustration and being fed up? Did you get sick? Did you have to go to the hospital? I am wanting to cheat VERY BAD. I want to eat a whole cake! I am even having dreams of eating breaded chicken and a slice of entemanns cake. I just am worried that I would get so sick I would end up in the hospital
After reading the information in your signature......how could you possibly WANT to cheat. I don't cheat because there are too many accidentals, and that's enough for me.
I have not done, yet, but there is a whole bunch of gluten free products on line that are highly recommended. Cakes as well.
Treat youself to a wonderfull gluten free cake. I have been able to adjust to most everthing that I used to eat. I do miss McD's double bacon cheeseburger....but I can get over it.
...you can too

Welcome, your have found yourself a wonderful place here.
You certainly have many of the 200 symptoms of Celiac Disease.
If you have no need for further testing nor the expense, there is no reason not to try the gluten free diet.
It, in the beginning can be very complicated, but it appears that you have educated yourself and that's half the battle. There are many advanced bakers here and they show us their photo's to all of us of their goodies (to make us drool), so there is not need to deprive yourself in any manner. It is just a change.
Remember to check your lotions, shampoo, and lipstick or lip balm.
This is a full service board, so please feel free to ask anything.

I've been gluten-free for almost two months now, and I am making a real effort to stay upbeat, but last night was just really rough. I was already sad because it was graduation night for our only child. On top of that, six of us went out to eat at the Cheesecake Factory, one of my favorite restaurants. It was the first time I'd been there since going gluten-free. Our waiter, whose dad has Celiac Disease, was wonderful, but it was just really hard looking at the three different kinds of bread, which I love, plus I couldn't have the pizza I would have ordered in the past. I had steamed broccoli and a salad. I couldn't even have the candied pecans, because they had gluten in them. It's just really hard sometimes. On top of that, I've had a tummy ache for three days. I don't have any IBS symptoms at all. It's just a "sour stomach." I know I haven't been glutened. Anyhow, just needed to vent.
Ordinarily, life is all about choices, with being celica is choices are extroidanaire. I find it a mind game. I eat that, I get sick, do I want to do that? Again choices.
There is not reason that you can not eat very well. But you have other issues going on. You are morning your loss of food, and the loss of your child moving on. And you have every reason to be emotional....and so should you.
You have a transition time ahead of you, but, take one on at a time.. Eat home as much as possible. Perhaps your son will be with you for the summer before school and so spend some quite time with him if you can catch him.
Relay and well wishes to you. Lisa
Gas And Bloating
in Coping with Celiac Disease
Posted
Yes ma'am, gas is a very common side effect of gluten intolerance. It will go away, trust me, when you eliminate all the gluten from your diet. This is a very free speaking board. We talk about describing our stool size and shape and texture, and proud when they are normal looking. A strange bunch we are, but also with a common bond. So feel free to talk about farts and poops.
, we have all been there.
To answer your questions:
Shampoo can get into your mouth during a shower. A lower risk, but still a risk. Dove Products are pretty good . A few do react to topical gluten products.
Lipstick, ingested - I use Burt's Bees and SOME Clinique.
The key to getting well Texas, is learning to read lables and calling companies to insure that their products are gluten free. But, we can get you over the hump regarding gluten free products while you are learning the ropes.
Several people here have a list of companies that will alway list gluten in their ingredience list... Kraft, ConAgra...are great companies.
Jin (NoGluGirl) will arrive shortly and give you a wonderful list of gluten free products.
Yup, Celiac is a reality check. But trust me, it gets easier and soon it will become second nature, but only after you power punch the oak tree in the back yard. There is an emotional process here.
Stick with us, there are alot of good folks here that have been where you are and willing to walk you through Celiacland.
