  1. My son was asymptomatic. We discovered the Celiac due to very, very low iron levels and the fact the liquid iron he was taking was not absorbing properly. He tested positive by blood test and upper endoscopy. The rest of us in the family all had blood tests that came back negative.
  2. I have to jump in and say that in the letter I had drafted, I had not asked for parents NOT to send in treats, but rather to NOTIFY me that they were going to, so I could arrange for my son to have a similar treat. Obviously I wouldn't expect anyone to provide him with a gluten-free treat, or not provide their own kids with sandwiches for lunch - just...
  3. The movie Order of the Phoenix is coming out on the 13th. It's my birthday that day, so I know what I'm doing! The movies would be over 4 hours long! It wouldn't bother me, but you know, some people might walk out of the theatre. I remember when we saw the Prisoner of Azkaban, Ty talked the WHOLE time: They're on the train how come the dementedors...
  4. My son keeps mini Aero bars and Rockets (which I believe are like U.S. Smarties) in his teacher's desk in case of emergency. The kids don't have lockers or cubbys or anything, so anything he keeps at school has to be reasonably small and crush-proof. In other words - no chips. I had drafted a letter to the parents requesting prior notice should any of...
  5. UPDATE! Please add Lucerne Chocolate Marble Ice Cream and Safeway Select Moosetracks Ice Cream to your gluten-free lists. Mmmm. Ice cream. (insert drooly smiley here )
  6. Aha! That makes perfect sense. This is our first study. I'm bad for going page by page and then finding out on the last page I should have written my name down and that's all. That was the test. If we can submit additional notes, I think that'll ease my mind a bit. It's like at the eye doctor...better or worse? better or worse? They're the same...
  7. I got the same package. I wish there was a place to write notes. For example, Ty is answering the questions, but I'm filling out the answers and for things like teasing, etc. it doesn't say "do you teased about eating special food?" just "do you get teased?" Well, Ty wanted to put "sometimes" and I'm trying to tell him the question really means is he...
  8. Oh Beverly that's awful! I suppose he thinks anaphylaxis is worse than feeling crappy for 2 weeks and he's thankful you didn't die in the restaurant (instead of wishing you were dead). I guess when he calls you back you'll have to emphasize that you have a disease that thankfully can be controlled by diet and that unfortunately when you get sick...
  9. What is NT? I see in a previous post it says "regular people", but why are they referred to as NT?
  10. Aha. Thanks, I was curious about how that worked.
  11. All first degree relatives should be tested upon a positive diagnosis. Our pediatric GI requisitioned tests for me, my husband and older son, I don't know why yours wouldn't. Be sure to mention the severe eczema to the GI as an incentive for testing.
  12. Does it taste cottage cheesy? I hate cottage cheese, I think it's the texture, but it goes in a blender, so that should eliminate the icky texture, right?
  13. Cheri, I notice it has rice flour, how does Carleigh tolerate that if she's allergic to rice? Or is there a trick because of the amount of rice, or something?
  14. I think I found the website. There seem to be a few gluten-free recipes. Open Original Shared Link
  15. Good luck Beverly!
  16. Mmmmm! Sounds yummy. Where's the drooling smiley?
  17. Yellow corn flour. I have seen white corn flour at the Superstore labelled as Masa Harina, but I used Unico brand corn flour, I bought it at Walmart and it's yellow. Cornstarch and corn flour are not the same. Don't ask me the difference though, I'll tell you it's because the flour is yellow. Cornmeal is not nearly as fine, and I have never tried...
  18. Thanks for the lesson Nikki!
  19. Maybe that's his hemoglobin level? I confess I don't know the difference between ferritin and hemoglobin, but they're both iron of some kind. When Ty was first tested they said the level should be between 10 - 110 for a boy of 5, and his was 3. I only know they tested for iron, and he went on 5mg liquid iron daily for a month and the level...
  20. I use Carol Fenster's sorghum/corn flour blend for this cake. Open Original Shared Link has the blend.
  21. My son has the Silly Yak hoodie from Cafepress. On the front is a picture of a "Silly Yak" and on the back is a description of celiac. While we were crossing the street from our hotel in Anaheim to get to the Disney main gate, I got into a conversation with a man who'd been reading the t-shirt and mentioned his son's PKU. I'm not too familiar with PKU...
  22. Hilarious! One time we were at the Calgary Zoo at the gorilla enclosure and we saw a big male gorilla lying down right in front of the window. He picked his nose, ate it, glanced out of the corner of his eye and saw us watching him and clapped his hand on his forehad in the traditonal "D'oh!" move. We laughed so hard and wished we'd had our video camera...
  23. I got home from the off leash in time to watch the back half of the Eastern feed. Nothing there but a guy decorating cakes. I don't think they were gluten-free. I have to go to school for the fun lunch, so I'm setting the PVR for the Western feed. (PVR is Canadian Tivo.)
  24. Here are a link to the recipe. Open Original Shared Link
