ARCHIVED So What Do You Do When Products "may Contain Traces" Of Wheat?
2Boys4Me replied to mamatide's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I won't buy anything that says "may contain traces of wheat", but I will buy things that say "made in the same facility as products made with wheat". I can't find any info online, but Mitchell's will clearly list gluten, and so will their subsidiary Olympic. You're in Canada, right? Or am I mistaking you for someone else? The brand of hot dogs we use are... -
ARCHIVED Kellogg's Has Bad Info On Their Website
2Boys4Me replied to floridanative's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was looking at cereal this morning at the grocery store, and I can't remember what kind, but it was either corn or rice based, I'm pretty sure it was a Kellogg's product - Crispix or something, and after the word malt flavouring it said in brackets corn (something I can't remember - corn sugar? corn flour?) and malted barley. Then at the end of the ingredient... -

ARCHIVED She Just Does Not Want To Eat ...
2Boys4Me replied to manja's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ditto. The only thing I would add is to turn off the tv and make her sit at the table with the family at meal time. At two and half she can certainly sit at the table and watch you guys eat for 15 minutes, even if she's not hungry or won't eat. My kids are 6 1/2 and 8 1/2 and at suppertime even if they aren't hungry they are required to sit at the table... -
ARCHIVED Help! Need Positive Blood Work For Doctors Note
2Boys4Me replied to tiffjake's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What the??? We're planning a trip to Disneyland, and then south to Sea World and all that stuff. Did they say you couldn't bring your own food? We'll be taking food...try to stop me! Of course, I have the advantage of the gluten-free boy being able to turn on the little pouty teary face to encourage them to allow the food in . If they don't have allergen... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free/dairy Free Basic White Bread
2Boys4Me replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Is there such a thing as a dry milk substitute? Most of the bread recipes in my cookbooks call for dry skim milk powder. -

That's great! How lucky you were to just stumble onto a great dining experience. -
ARCHIVED Companies Putting Wheat In Once "wheat Free" Food
2Boys4Me replied to frustratedneicey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've only found one brand of Puffed Rice w/o "may contain traces of wheat" and that's Safeway brand. It used to say may contain but now the only ingredient is rice, but it's "made in a factory that uses wheat". Nature's Path (or Valley) has an organic puffed brown rice w/o wheat. -
Thanks, that was quick!

ARCHIVED List For The Newly Diagnosed
2Boys4Me replied to TCA's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In CANADA all Colgate-Palmolive products are gluten-free. TCA, may I add something to your list? I think you and I have both done this. 10. Make a Print out for your pantry door (and Gramma's pantry door or whoever might be taking care of your gluten-free child -or you should you need taking care of). My print-out is in two columns. Gluten Free... -
Is Gatorade gluten-free? I remember looking at a label and noticing it was made by Pepsi, but the flavour I looked at had "natural flavour", so Non-gluten-free boy got the gatorade and the gluten-free boy got something else.

ARCHIVED 19 Month Old W/ Failure To Thrive
2Boys4Me replied to mom2fiveblueyebabes's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ditto to the other comments. My 6 year old son's symptom was anemia. He was on a growth curve of his own, it was below the charts, but he had a consistent curve. He could also be very irritable, never complained of stomach aches, never had diarrhea, but did have a little belly. After the first week on the diet both my husband and I mentioned how much happier... -
I'd double check on your local Burger King and A&W's. Neither of those restaurants closest to us use dedicated fryers for the fries.

ARCHIVED Cereals And Labeling, Kind Of Confused
2Boys4Me replied to kenyonsmommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Which makes me wonder why Wendy's can find a fake malt for their frosties, but Kellogg's and everyone else can't find fake malt for cereal. Everyone with or related to someone with Celiac should be bombarding the R&D departments to research fake malt. We don't have any gluten cereal in the house anymore, and it's all because of one little boy. When one... -
ARCHIVED Need Cheesecake Recipe...
2Boys4Me replied to Ksmith's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Technically, it's a recipe for graham crackers. I let them dry out a bit and then chop 'em up in the food processor. I've discovered two cheesecakes later to use less butter in the crumb crust that needs butter/crumbs/sugar mixed up. The recipe is in the Bette Hagman Bakes Bread cookbook, and I believe the Incredible Edible Gluten-Free Food for Kids cookbook... -
ARCHIVED Baking Gluten-free
2Boys4Me replied to juliedel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've flipped through the Ryberg book and I think the problem is that you're using potato FLOUR. She uses potato STARCH. Potato flour and starch are two very different products (although the starch is sometimes referred to as potato starch flour). The flour has a wheat flour texture, it looks like flour, but the starch is very fine and brilliant white, not... -

ARCHIVED New Restaurant In Calgary
2Boys4Me replied to Rusla's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Bearing in mind that my son has NO OUTWARD symptoms (so we'd never know if he was getting gluten accidentally) we've only been to the Mongolie Grill (4th Street downtown and Dalhousie Station in the Northwest) and Chianti. Chianti has (I believe) 3 locations in town, we go to the one at Crowfoot. They use cornstarch as a thickener - I think he said all sauces... -
ARCHIVED New Restaurant In Calgary
2Boys4Me replied to Rusla's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I haven't been there, and probably won't go, because they don't let kids in and it's my 6 year old who needs the gluten-free meal. I was under the impression that everything was gluten-free/lactose free EXCEPT the booze. You should give them a call. The owner's name is Jeff. Splitt Pourhouse & Grill at 7746 Elbow Drive S.W. (about 5 blocks south of Glenmore... -

ARCHIVED Kraft Rules!
2Boys4Me replied to Girl Ninja's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You know those big cannister thingys - green with Parmesan cheese? Try looking for a big orange one with Kraft Cracker Barrel cheese logo on it. Our grocery started stocking them, they're all over the place and my kids say it's just like the Kraft Dinner stuff. I have to leave the kitchen whenever KD or KD cheese is around. The smell... bleah! -
Thanks, Richard, I didn't know that. I'll double check with Wendy's Canada about that.
-
Things are different in the States. In Canada, Wendy's fries are NOT on the gluten-free list. Open Original Shared Link

I didn't think the issue was a dedicated fryer, but something ON the fries themselves to make them crispy.
