  1. Great info - we were there a few years ago, pre-diagnosis, and really want to go back so I will definitely try your suggestions. Icelandgirl - one of the things I mourned when I got my diagnosis was this wonderful sort of flatbread that wasn't crispy but was fairly thin. I remember we bought it just at a corner small grocery near the center of Reykjavic...
  2. Not sure if it's near you, but I had an absolutely delicious burger (no bun - they may have had a gluten-free one, but usually I just have plain) at the Wigwam hotel (not the one with the actual wigwams, but the one with the cool water slide). Best meal in a long time.
  3. I eat out a lot - but I'm lucky I live in a city with a lot of options. I don't usually bring a cooler along when we travel, but I admit that means I'm sometimes stuck eating potato chips and kind bars from the 7 - 11 on the road. If you have healthier aspirations, bringing your own is a good idea. Just wanted to add that as a few have mentioned Mexican...
  4. I know there are many people on here who have soy intolerances in addition to Celiac, but I'm wondering if anyone else (non-intolerant) is concerned about use of soy in substitute foods, etc. I know it's wiser to eat whole foods and not processed, but as a busy working mom and one who likes to eat gluten-free versions of what my family is eating, I admit...
  5. I know we're all different in how we react. One of my concerns is that my reactions generally come an hour or two after being glutened, and I fear that if someone messes up (intentionally or not) and doesn't see me running into the bathroom immediately following, that I was 'faking it'. This only reinforces their carelessness (intentional or not) for the...
  6. Thanks Karen! Yes, that's true. I just always have read Kraft and McCormick as being very clear in their labeling and started to panic when i saw one and not the other ;-)
  7. I have heard McCormick spices are very clear in their labelling, but no one's yet mentioned them on this thread. I tend to buy McCormick's spice blends because I'd heard they would call out any gluten. Is that not true?
  8. Thanks. I got an e-mail back from Con Agra that basically repeated what was on the website, but with enough additional info to make me feel comfortable eating it - combined with your reassurances! Looking forward to that soup...
  9. Hi - Does anyone know if Healthy Choice Chicken & Rice Canned is gluten free? Does anyone with Celiac eat it safely? The ingredients list both Maltodextrin and Potato Maltodextrin, so I'm wondering about that first Maltodextrin. It's a Con Agra product, if that matters. When I did a search here, the only recent posting was about a recall in spring...
  10. Thank you all - that's very reassuring.
  11. I know people generally don't worry about hair care products (shampoo and rinse-out conditioner). I've used my same shampoo and conditioner for years and just try to rinse without getting any in my mouth. But I want to step up my routine and use some leave-in products (conditioning cream, anti-frizz, styling cream, etc.) and wonder if I have to worry about...
  12. Give him some material to read so he understands how seriously you have to take it. If he can't come around after reading that (and I don't mean living gluten-free at home, but just not pushing things on you, and being generally careful), then you can assume that he doesn't make your health a priority.
  13. Can't say that I handle this right, but I only eat packaged cold cuts in general. One exception is a local place where they only use Boars Head meats and I've asked them and they say they never slice anything but meat and cheese on the slicer. Even so, I ask them to change their gloves first. Generally, I buy packaged.
  14. My company cafeteria sometimes does a quinoa specialty station, with sauces and add-ins. I've had long talks with the manager there about my Celiac and they've been extremely accommodating - they were very pleased to tell me about this new option. We've discussed all the ingredients, and they have a separate prep area, so I felt quite confident about eating...
  15. Glad you're ok, but it's a shame you got glutened. Yes, oil and vinegar is my only option when I'm out, unless I bring my own dressing (I used to order packets of dressing and gluten-free soy sauce at minimus.com to carry with me) Someone here mentioned a trick if they accidentally bring you a salad with croutons on it. When you send it back, hide a...
  16. Oh, and I agree with previous poster - sometimes I just say 'I have a lot of dietary issues' and order nothing but a drink or something I trust.
  17. NYC is very gluten free aware. At business lunches with new people, I generally don't inform everyone because I don't want to make my celiac the agenda and it gets us off track. I either call the restaurant ahead of time and ask about the menu and ask them to describe me to the waiter so that when I order, waiter will know to tell kitchen to take extra...
  18. It's the "My Content" link under my login, and thankfully it's back. I've got lots of great recipes and advice stored there!
  19. And it didn't add the one above
  20. All my saved content is gone ;-(
  21. I know this is McCormick and their labeling is easy, but I'm just wondering if anyone's used this successfully. I looked at the label quickly in the store but now can't get to it.
  22. Thanks - no, sadly, she won't get tested. I pretty much had to bribe her (with my own weight loss) to try going gluten-free til the end of May to see if she feels any better. She believes this is all just old age.
  23. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease about two years ago, and I feel so much better. My 84 year old mother has been complaining about her daily constipation and arthritis feeling much much worse lately. Am I right in thinking she should try going gluten free for a month to see if that helps? I know there's a genetic component, so that may be part...
  24. I take Levothyroxine from Mylan with no problem. Is that generic?
  25. Got a great reply from TJs - much as we suspected: Thank you for contacting us with your product inquiry. In response, our "Just Sauce" Turkey Bolognese Sauce does not contain any gluten ingredients or sources, and there is no gluten present in the vendor facility. However, the product does not make the claim "gluten free" on the label, as the supplier...
