  1. There's got to still be gluten going on there. I think he should be bringing his meals to the firehouse and also looking for sources of hidden gluten. Soy sauce is a big one. I don't drink beer, but I've heard even the supposed 'gluten free' ones can be risky (please don't flame me - I don't know if this is true), licorice, etc., places people wouldn...
  2. He should contact the Celiac Foundations of major countries for advice. I've done this. Also stop into grocery stores when he arrives -- Schar products are widely available, in my experience. Good luck!
  3. Could it be related to your morning coffee? Does it to me.

    ARCHIVED Brgr?

Does anyone know this chain? One recently opened in my neighborhood. I stopped in and they seem knowledgeable and say that the fries have a dedicated fryer, but I'd just like to hear others' experiences. Thanks.
  5. Oh, and favorite breads are canyon bakehouse rye like bread and schar deli style. The things I miss most are madeleines to dunk in my coffee and a really good, flaky croissant. Well, those are the food items I miss most. What I really miss most is spontenaity (sp?) and feeling safe when I eat out. And not having to explain myself to the waitstaff...
  6. Biggest thing for me is feeling confident that the kitchen and waitstaff truly understand cross-contamination and prevent it. I don't mind ordering non-gluten containing items, but I'd like to not have fear with every meal. Maybe this can be done with menu wording, or evidence of training (GIG?) posted in the window or on the menu. Also, somehow call...
  7. Hi - I just received a griller/panini maker as a gift (think George Foreman Grill- type, but a different brand), and I'd love recommendations for types of gluten-free bread to use with it. I plan to use it to grill chicken breasts and burgers, but would also like to make some panini-type sandwiches. I appreciate any and all recommendations. I've...
  8. A couple of months ago I got my usual cobb salad at Pret a Manger, with a balsamic vinaigrette dressings. The salad has a gluten-free sticker on it, and the dressing always has been gluten free. Well, I got almost immediately sick and hadn't been back again until last week. I picked up the cobb salad and went for the dressing and noticed that there...
  9. Crustless mini quiches are pretty easy to make and you can pop a couple out every day to heat up. I don't have a recipe on hand, but easy to find online.
  10. You know, I can't imagine dating with this (I was long married when I got my dx), but I've accepted 'awkward'. I have come to embrace 'awkward', and made it part of my 'thing'. Last year, I didn't feel like dealing with it all, so I brought an Artisan Bistro frozen turkey meal to dinner, popped it in the micro and drank wine. I just tell people that I...
  11. Thanks - yes, that's where I got the FAQs above. However, nothing there indicates any possible sources of cross-contamination (the "made in a facility..." caveat), so I wanted to see if anyone had tried them. Has anyone had experience with these?
  12. Has anyone had these? Our local specialty store just started offering them and they seem like an easy, tasty solution for busy nights. Nowhere on the packaging does it have any information about the facility though, so I wanted to see whether others have eaten them safely. Mostly interested i n the flavored ones - Mexican Style, Peri Peri, etc. Thanks...
  13. You didn't mention whether you were getting the Dunkin Donuts coffee at home (from packaged grounds) or at a DD store. While I go to many Dunkin Donuts safely, there's one near here that I don't trust -- just seems like the place is dusted in doughnut flour. Is that a possibility?
  14. I've never heard of this -- pancake flour gets added to scrambled eggs? Wow, that's frightening.
  15. Thanks, Kareng - interestingly, this is not the website I originally found for them. But when I went up to products and pulled down Orangina, it does say "no allergens", so I think I'm good. I wonder why I found a different website....
  16. Hi - Does anyone know if Orangina is Gluten Free? I did a search here but could only find info from 2005 and the website is no help. Thanks!
  17. It's probably been asked, but I'm looking for suggestions for lunches to bring to work. I had been doing fine eating (carefully) off the salad bar in our cafeteria for the last year --- up 'til today. I see that I'm going to need to bring in my own lunches from here on out. I don't mind bringing in a turkey sandwich on gluten-free bread, but I don't...
  18. Does anyone know about Bhel Puri? Just saw it at my local restaurant and it looked fantastic. Haven't asked the cook yet, but when I google, i see recipes with and without wheat puri. I really want this (and without my making it myself), so I thought I'd check and see if anyone is familiar with it.
  19. I have a 9 year old and a 13 year old. And a 45 year old (husband). I have my own cutting board (different color) and wash all pots and pans again before using them (I actually did this before dx - like them to be freshly clean). Kids know to spoon things onto their plate before using/spreading them. I do have my own butter, soy sauce, etc. Also kids...
  20. Very sweet - one of my co-workers gave me a fantastic gluten-free cookbook after my diagnosis, and some gluten-free pasta. Extremely thoughtful and really helped.
  21. I've had buckwheat ramen, but I don't remember the brand. It wasn't too bad. I'd bring some of those tuna in a pouch things. They pack well. You can also get some add hot water gluten free mac and cheese bowls, but they're really small. I do like the Thai Kitchen noodles, and I get these add hot water cups of jambalaya and other rice dishes from a company...
  22. Thanks - these are good suggestions. I really miss getting my cold cuts at the deli.
  23. I've avoided eating Boars Head Turkey or Roast Beef that would need to be sliced at the deli counter, because I'm afraid they would have sliced something with gluten on the same slicer and there could be residue. But I'm wondering if I'm being over-cautious. Do you buy cold cuts that need to be sliced, or just buy packaged (which usually means over-processed...
  24. Just beware of the mini size Hershey Bars - those are NOT gluten free. I think they use some sort of emulsifier in them. I like Smarties, Jolly Ranchers, Skittles. I didn't know Tootsie Pops were gluten-free - glad to hear it!
  25. Thanks. I will try.
