Gluten Free Teriyaki Sauce
Nikki2777 commented on MycasMommy's blog entry in Brynja's Grain Free Kitchen
Kikkoman is actually making a gluten free soy sauce now. It's not bad. -
ARCHIVED Annoyance With Fad Dieters
Nikki2777 replied to c.reez's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's the upside and the downside - the upside is there's this wonderful new market created by these people for prepared foods and menus that you and I can benefit from. The downside is that chefs, waiters, etc., don't take the risk of cross-contamination seriously and that there are eye-rollers out there who just don't get that I'd LOVE to not have to eat... -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Turkey Bolognese Sauce?
Nikki2777 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi - Does anyone know if this is gluten free? I know TJ's is not labelling everything these days and I checked their gluten-free list (which is now a 'sample' of items). The ingredient list seemed safe (saw "flour" on label, but it's Navy Bean Flour.) It looks delicious and I'd like to be able to use it, but thought I'd check. thanks -
ARCHIVED Mashed Potatoes?
Nikki2777 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hope I'm spelling 'potatoes' right Had a waiter tell me the other day that while their mashed potatoes don't have any gluten ingredients, the act of mashing them itself creates gluten. My suspicion is that while that may be true, it's not the kind of gluten that causes problems for we Celiacs, but I didn't feel like getting into a discussion. Is... -
I eat out a lot, but I won't go to a pizzeria that has regular pizza unless I can see clearly that the areas are kept very separate, gloves are changed, etc. There's just too much flour floating around. I usually just have a canned soda when I'm with people in these places, and eat at home.

Look up celiac restaurant cards - you can get one in spanish. I think a company called Triumph makes some, but there may be others. I have quite a bit of luck with Mexican, but then again I live in a big city and there's high awareness of Celiac. I do always ask if the chips are corn only, and if they're fried with other things. And if there's any...

American Airlines Gluten-Free Meals- Bad Experiences?
Nikki2777 replied to MarzieK's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I didn't get served something I shouldn't but on the last AA flight I took, 90% of the meal was inedible. I fly quite a bit, and this was among the worst airline meals I'd ever had. I have another flight with them coming up (I know, I know, my husband booked it), so we'll see how that goes, but I'm not holding out any hope -
ARCHIVED Gorgonzola Cheese?
Nikki2777 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Great, Kareng - as always, thank you! I guess I didn't realize Gorgonzola was just a form of blue cheese and would be considered safe like blue cheese is. I know what I'm ordering there next time -- -
ARCHIVED Gorgonzola Cheese?
Nikki2777 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm confused - I thought I'd learned that Gorgonzola was not safe to eat because of how it was aged (on bread?). But a restaurant I frequently go to - one that has very comforting gluten-free practices, and seems very knowledgeable -- has gorgonzola as an option on their gluten free pizza. I've never asked them, but can that be right? I know I initially... -
ARCHIVED Healthy Choice Beef Merlot
Nikki2777 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It was pretty good, actually - seemed high in sodium and the portion was SMALL (only 180 calories). Thought I'd report back. -
ARCHIVED Healthy Choice Beef Merlot
Nikki2777 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you, Kareng! I had not yet gotten to calling them. That's a big help. Looking forward to trying it. -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Piiza Crusts, First Attempts
Nikki2777 replied to murphy203's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
funny - Just today I noticed some very thin crust, almost crackerlike, pizzas featured in our company cafeteria (not for the likes of me, obviously) and I was thinking I'd like to see if I can make something like that at home. I like a very thin, crisp crust. Looking forward to trying that KA mix out. -
ARCHIVED Healthy Choice Beef Merlot
Nikki2777 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi - I saw these in the frozen section last night. They say Gluten Free on them, but no indication about cross-contamination, etc. I don't generally like frozen meals, but sometimes the convenience is just too hard to pass up when I'm busy. Does anyone eat these and know if they are safe? Does Healthy choice have other Gluten Free options that are... -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's White Corn Chips/trader Joe's In General
Nikki2777 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does anyone know if these are gluten free (not the organic ones). The ingredients look fine, but they weren't on the TJ's list of gluten-free items - though it says the list is only a sampling. And a general question - I haven't been in TJ's since the labelling law change, and it seems like far fewer TJ's items say gluten-free these days. They no longer... -
ARCHIVED What's Your Favorite Gluten Free Restaurant?
Nikki2777 replied to katiesalmons's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Risotteria, Little Beet, and Five Napkin Burger (I don't even bother with the buns, but the fries are in a dedicated fryer)! As for chains, I like Outback and PF Changs (but so much sodium). -
Never heard of it - where is it? (I'm in midtown)
-
I've actually never even thought of it, and I share the house with three gluten eaters. Of course, I can't say that I haven't been cc'd, but not that I'm aware of.

ARCHIVED Sometimes This Really Sucks.....
Nikki2777 replied to GwenO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Perhaps they can even match her up with a family with Celiac? I'd get in touch with the Celiac Association in each country (I know there's one in france, and they're very helpful), and ask them if they've had a situation like this before. -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free" Creperie A Charade?
Nikki2777 replied to C-Girl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
That's really scary - please post at least what city this was in (if not the name of the place), so we can be forewarned. But also, I would call them and tell them you got sick, as well as posting on Find Me gluten-free or any local Celiac Meet Up sites. I did manage to find a place that does gluten-free Crepes (Well, "Gallettes" made with buckwheat... -
My reactions prior to diagnosis were not consistent. I remember eating a bagel the day before my positive result and having no reaction. When they did the endoscopy on me, the doctor said the damage to my cilli looked like it was in patches. My Celiac was caught relatively early, so my suspicion (and I have no science to back this up) is that the patchiness...

ARCHIVED Bob's Red Mill Cornmeal - Shared Lines (Not gluten-free Packaging)
Nikki2777 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So frustrating - I'm trying to cook more, and I have no experience with corn meal. Rushed through the store getting ingredients for a recipe I've been wanting to try and didn't realize I picked up the Bob's cornmeal with the shared facility/equipment warning on the back. I can't use this, right? So, my family will be able to have this delicious looking... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And My Whole Life Ahead Of Me
Nikki2777 replied to butterflygirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sure everyone else will weigh in here - but you cannot do this. It has to be cold turkey or you will never get better and you will continue doing serious damage to your system that can have long term (and huge) implications. You need to be 100% off - it's like being pregnant: You are or you aren't. And I can tell you that I last night I found some... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And My Whole Life Ahead Of Me
Nikki2777 replied to butterflygirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
All I can say is, it gets so much easier and you feel so much better that it just becomes second nature. Just two years ago, I could have written a similar post (though admittedly, I am *ahem* a bit older than 28), but I can't imagine ever going back to gluten now. It's just not worth it. And I won't sugar coat it - about once every three months, I... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With People At Work
Nikki2777 replied to I-want-nachos's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My take is a little different - I would go out with them, eat a little something before you go and have a coffee and bring a Kind bar or two to nosh on while you're at the table. It's important not to give up your social life - you become resentful and isolated. And in corporate jobs, these kind of bonding experiences are important. It's likely because... -
ARCHIVED Sephora Lipsticks?
Nikki2777 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi - Does anyone have any lipstick brand names at Sephora that are Gluten Free? I'd like to go there and see if they can match my favorite color from my pre-gluten-free days. Unfortunately, Red Apple doesn't have anything close - they were my first choice. Thanks
