ARCHIVED gluten-free Chocolate Cake In Everyday Food Magazine
skoki-mom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The magazine "Everyday Food" by Martha Stewart Living has a recipe in it this month for Flourless Fudge Cake. It just calls for butter, cocoa powder, chocolate chips, eggs, sugar, confectioners sugar and orange-flavoured liqueur. I'm not too big on the chocolate-orange thing, so I got some raspberry liqueur instead. I'm having some friends over next week... -
A good friend of mine is moving back to Newfoundland next week, and I wanted to take her out for lunch before she left. I know Chilis is a favourite place of hers, so I called them 2 days ago to ask if they had any gluten free items on thier menu. The woman on the phone assured me they did. So we go there today. The server tells me to go for anything...

ARCHIVED How Will I Manage A Wedding ?
skoki-mom replied to georgie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
From what I understand, England is a lot more gluten-free saavy than North America, as there is a higher incidence of celiac disease in the UK. If the meal is being catered at a hotel or restaraunt, I'd definitely talk to your friend and ask if a gluten-free meal can be arranged. If the food is being brought onto location by a caterer, your chances are... -
ARCHIVED Nausea After/during Endoscopy?
skoki-mom replied to jmengert's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd ask them for a narcotic as well. My first scope was a breeze, I had midazolam (Versed), Fentanyl (a narcotic) and the hurricane spray. The second one was done by a different doctor and all I got was the midazolam and it was not the best experience. As to whether or not you will get nausea, everyone is different. I have no problems with anesthetic... -
ARCHIVED My Seven Year Old Hates His Diet
skoki-mom replied to GraceA's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree that the family has to be pretty much gluten-free at home. You say the family "hates it", well, imagine for a minute that you are the one committed to a life sentence with it. At least you get to eat whatever you want when you are work, when he is at school, when you go out for dinner alone or when you are out with friends. I am the adult in the... -
ARCHIVED Are Smarties gluten-free?
skoki-mom replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, Smarties are way better than M&Ms, and I miss them. I always ate the red ones last -
ARCHIVED Parents Begging Not To Do Biopsy On Dd
skoki-mom replied to LauraW's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Laura, I just wanted to add that a negative reaction from your parents or your mother's friends is the least of your worries. How on earth is she going to miss out on childhood by following a diet? Her childhood is what you, and she, make it. I think they are being extremely selfish, especially considering that you may have it, too. Don't they want their... -
I actually got asked to phone in the pizza order in question on the night shift I told you about. They said "Lori, you're not busy, will you phone in the pizza order?". And I said "uh, no. I'm not gonna have anything to do with pizza I can't eat". I got a look for a second, then I think the person realized what she had asked me to do. In that case, I...

steveindenver, I totally feel your pain. In my case, it's never a company paid for lunch (I'm a nurse), but my staff room is full of gluteny "gifts" that I never get to touch. The neonatologists often bring in donuts/pastries on the weekends. The staffroom is full of sandwiches on Thursday afternoons after teaching rounds. Everytime a fellow leaves, the...

I'll have to watch for you Rusla! rinne, I live in the NW. There is a Chianti's at Crowfoot Crossing mall, as well as an Outback, Tony Roma's and Joey Tomato's. I'm asymptomatic, so I really can't comment on CC at any of these places, but they are the places I go to around here. I really need to get over to Hi-Ball, do they do a gluten-free ginger beef...

ARCHIVED Pasta?
skoki-mom replied to hannahsue01's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tinkyada is good for shaped pasta. I buy the rice vermicelli (cheapo stuff in the Asian foods section) for spaghetti substitute though, and it's very good once you get the sauce on it. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Meatballs?
skoki-mom replied to NicoleAJ's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I leave the breadcrumbs out entirely. So far, no problems with them sticking together. I use lean ground beef. -
ARCHIVED Red Wine Made Me Sick And I Dont Know Why
skoki-mom replied to rutland's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just wanted to say that if you have a sulphite allergy, you need to stay away from all wines, because the grapes are sprayed with sulphites before they are made into wine. My sister has anaphylactic reactions to sulphites and she avoids ALL products made from grapes, including grape juice and rasins, for this reason. You may be able to find organic grapes... -
ARCHIVED Is It Really That Easy For Some?
skoki-mom replied to Eeyorific's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just want to say I feel your pain. I am trying to keep a grocery budget less than $100/week as I am a single mom and my kids are here half time. Luckily, my kids can eat normally, so I don't ever have to feel like they are deprived or going without. Basically, when my kids go to thier dad's house (for 4-6 days at a time), I pack leftovers for work when... -
ARCHIVED Red Wine Made Me Sick And I Dont Know Why
skoki-mom replied to rutland's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Red wine is heavy on sulphites. A lot of people are very sensitive to them, it might be the problem. -
ARCHIVED Can You Guys Believe....fish Food?
skoki-mom replied to chgomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did know that and I just wash my hands after feeding my fish. I don't wear gloves for cleaning and stuff because they'd have to come up to my shoulder to make it worthwhile in my big 55gal aquarium. At any rate, I normally take a shower anyhow when I'm done working with my arm that deep into a fish tank!!! -

ARCHIVED The Good Soy Sauce....
skoki-mom replied to clockworkjoce's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I use the Tamari organic stuff when I am cooking for my sister, as she has food issues other than gluten. For myself, I use VH, which is much cheaper and gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Bread For Stuffing
skoki-mom replied to luceydiana's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use Kinnikinnick Italian White bread. It turns out very well. -
Michelle, I'm so with you on this stuff. It took me a loooong time to decide to get my belly button pierced. I can only wear 18K gold in my ears, and my earrings have to hang from hooks or hoops because a traditional butterfly back has my ears itching and irritated in a few hours. I do sometimes wear special earrings out for an evening, but as soon as...

ARCHIVED Any Scrapbookers?
skoki-mom replied to Rachel--24's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It's similar to a Cricut, but you can actually attach it to your PC somehow and use your own fonts and clipart and stuff. I don't know a lot about it, but the PC compatibility is the big difference from Cricut. OF course, it's also an extra $200...........
