  1. I'm sorry too about your experience, Lizzy. I have always feared that same situation. It even freaks me out when people put lemon slices in my water - wondering...hmmmm....how were those handled? I avoid my own frustration, embarassment, etc. and no longer eat out . I am a spaz about food now, but it has paid off since I rarely get sick anymore (last episode...
  2. Thanks for posting. You have to be very careful with Whole Foods stuff.....lots of hidden glutens, which is so disappointing since I have always expected more from organic brands. Bummer. Hope you didn't get sick. PS Be careful with Whole Foods pasta sauces - they may look safe but most aren't gluten-free
  3. That's what I hate the most about celiac disease......if you get sick, it could have been almost anything, whether that's cc from the companies or your home, hidden gluten, whatever.....Sorry that happened and hope you are feeling better.
  4. I always check for the gluten-free label, but good reminder....I'm just wondering about jevan and what she got sick from....Jevan, did it say gluten-free? If it did and you still got sick, which one was it (that is, if you feel comfortable sharing)? BTW - does this forum now re-write acronyms (sp?) - it spelled out gluten free for me when I only put the...
  5. What salad dressing did you all get sick from? I used to eat salads all the time with annie's dressing for lunch, but have been making larger dinners lately and now just eat leftovers for lunch. You all getting sick is scary to me b/c I am so sensitive too and eat other annie's stuff all the time. I wonder about their ketchup and mustards......
  6. Yep, Lundenberg farms rice milk is good. I find that I have to watch my intake though b.c it is high carb and it seems to make me hungrier sooner than other foods. Enjoy!
  7. Thanks again all. And, George, good mention of it being a men's issue too, not many people realize that (same with breast cancer, though that is much less frequent in men). The doc office called me yesterday before I stopped by to pick up the referral in the morning. The nurse working said that the doc would not give me a referral because I was too...
  8. Thanks for all the replies and reassurance! I appreciate it. No doctor ever recommended a bone density test for me either, but I have read that it is important to have. When I called to get the referral yesterday, the nurse had no idea what celiac was, why a bone density test was needed, etc.....Not really suprising, I suppose, just sad b/c of the lack...
  9. Thanks, George. Yes, this article is better than average. Great find. I shared it with my family.
  10. I get the this too after I have accidently had gluten. Ex. There are these thick glass windows at my gym, sometimes I would bend down to put my water and mp3 player down by the window wall and hit my head on the window - so embarrassing!
  11. Sounds painful. Hope your friend can find relief soon.
  12. Oh, yuck....bone biopsies (pathetic that I am a biologist, but have a weak stomach, guess that explains why I didn't got the vet. route). No offense, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that you are wrong about that
  13. Enjoy life makes great bagels (even cinnamon raisin), cookies, and breakfast bars.....I don't have kids myself, so I am not sure how their little taste buds would react, but I think the products are tasty. They make bread too, but I haven't tried it. Enjoy life is free of all common allergens, even dairy and soy. Another brand to try is Ener-G, the bread...
  14. Hi all, Has anyone followed up on the recommendations and had a bone density test done? I will be picking up my referral tomorrow to have one done. What do they do during the test? Is it painful? I am only 24, but my knees and ankles ache from gluten; also, my mom (dx'd with celiac disease too, 50+ yrs old) has osteoporosis (sp?), so I want to make...
  15. I will have to try their tomato paste too. I think I had a rxn to a store brand months back. Thanks for posting!
  16. Although I haven't had the test done myself (but plan to to see if I have one or two copies - thereby determining if both sides of my fam have it) - I don't believe that any genetic test could tell what side of the family a marker came from (unless they were using mtDNA or Y-chrom DNA, which they don't for these tests). The only way to know is for you to...
  17. As my Grandmother would say, we're Heinz 57 - likely a little bit of everything.
  18. Check out the book called Dangerous Grains. Apparently, psoriasis is related to celiac disease, though I can't remember how (i.e. if it is genetically linked or not). I have psoriasis too, on my scalp, elbows, knees, and nails - yes, nails....yuck, looks like I took sandpaper to my nails and scratched them up......it can also get on your toenails and looks...
  19. Hi all, The Bottom Line is a news magazine put out several times a month. Dec. 15 issue has a paragraph on the front page regarding celiac disease, and they mention the more obscure symptoms like hair loss and joint pain in addtion to the abdominal/gut problems. Great coverage. And, its always nice to see more info out in the media. Hope everyone is...
  20. I don't know if it is questionable or not, I think they were just being honest. I am sure that most packaged food can't guarentee anything either (which is why I stopped eating and using as much packaged stuff as possible). I stopped using it because it was just one more thing I didn't want to worry about, but I think others here have used it without problems...
  21. I was hospitalized last month with C.difficle. I was not on any meds at the time of the infection (besides Synthroid and Yasmin). The docs don't know how/why I got it (its not a food poisioning bacteria), but I suspect its just one of those bacterial overgrowths that those with celiac may be prone to. I had never been so ill in my life - the D was water...
  22. Rachel, I hope this work for you. I know you haven't been feeling well in a while. Thanks for all the info on salicylates - I could not recall ever hearing that term or hearing of the diet. Good luck to you!
  23. I got a response too. Very nice of him to make it through all those responses and actually get back to us!
  24. Listerine doesn't use a "gluten" alcohol, but they did tell me that they couldn't guarentee their stuff is gluten free (I guess just meaning cross contamination risk? who knows....).
  25. I'm sorry that happened. I always bring my own food, I don't even bother trying to explain things anymore to people.
