ARCHIVED Glutino Pretzels
bluelotus replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I tried Glutino lemon wafers and got sick. I contacted them and they said that their facility is gluten free, but I don't know what kind of guarentees come with the flours they get - that is, do they process their own flours or do they buy them off of someone else? I suppose it could have been egg too - though the cookies did not have egg as an ingrediant... -
I am very glad I saw this thread. A coworker and I will be taking a trip for work at the end of January, and as part of the trip (its a conference) you can order meals (which I am declining). I have tried to explain to her that no matter how innocent fruit at the buffet sounds, its a bad idea. (CC from cutting/food prep/lotion with wheat ingred. on hands...

ARCHIVED Do You Find You Miss Food You Barely Even Ate?
bluelotus replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I second the poptarts - mmmmm, strawberry with icing. I ate them maybe 1x every few years, but now I miss them The homemade gluten-free pies I make every so often do help though...... but can never be exactly the same. -
ARCHIVED Beware Of....
bluelotus replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the heads up. It is stupid and unfair when companies do that - yes, individuals need to take responsibility for what goes into their bodies, but it is so easy to slip up and not read, esp. when they so obviously labeled it gluten-free. Not fair, esp. considering what we have to go through to avoid eating gluten ..... For our sakes, I hope you... -
ARCHIVED One More Thing.....
bluelotus replied to danikali's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know...I'm interested in the response you get about the nuts. I think I was glutened once by Planters cashews and haven't yet had the chance to call and inquire about their contamination risk. Good luck - hope someone out there has more info than me. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Handle People Who Refuse To Recognize This Celiac Stuff?
bluelotus replied to frustratedneicey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sometimes I think there are people out there that want to sabatoge others...I don't want to say that about your mom directly, but just making generalities here. The whole thing reminds me of someone being slightly overweight with skinny friends (or even overweight friends) attempting to sabatoge a weight loss diet . I have been the bystander in those situations... -
ARCHIVED Top 5 Naturally Gluten Free Foods
bluelotus replied to JessicaB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Potatoes (white and sweet) Bananas (filling breakfast food) Real peanut butter Steak (I know, so bad for you and the enviro., but very tasty - I go organic) Bragg's Liquid Aminos (yummy soy sauce replacement) (Then there's always the basics of fruit and veggies, which I live off of for easy gluten-free snacks) -
Congratulations! I am going through something similar to you - I am working on my masters of science (in biology) and had a difficult time in the last year b/c of my celiac. Now, I have one chapter left and a defense, and I'll be done. It definitely shows our strength considering the disadvantages we face from our illness (and being sick so often) that...

ARCHIVED American Celiac Disease Alliance Food Labeling Fact Sheet
bluelotus replied to Moongirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow, thanks for finding this. I am anxious to see what the final definition of "gluten free" will be in 2008 as well as how they handle the risk of cross-contamination. At least the labeling of wheat is a step in the right direction. Thanks again! -
Yes, thanks for posting the information, I would have never known otherwise! All this recent publicity is great!

There's been quite a few discussions on this exact topic. Trying searching the forum for hair loss. If I had more time this morning, I'd pass on some of the main points, but I am in a bit of a rush. Don't get too worried though, many women with celiac disease have this problem (including me), and I was told that if you are completely gluten free, hair...

Many of us have experienced those odd looks from our families and refusal by them to accept our status -in part, I believe, b/c it might mean that they might have something wrong with them and they couldn't face our "odd lifestyle". This outlook on our lifestyle has inspired me to want to make my entire family holiday cookies this year as their only experience...

ARCHIVED Product Updates
bluelotus replied to eeyor-fan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the posts, but just an FYI on proactiv - I got that same BS response from them and told them that sending me an ingrediant list meant nothing, since certain its could be derived from a gluten source without that being indicated in the name. A rep then emailed me back and said "All Proactiv Solution products and extracts/fragrances are gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have gluten-free Chanukah Recipes To Share?
bluelotus replied to teacher1578's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'll be sure to pass on the recipe. If you don't mind, I would like to type it out tonight - its a bit of a lenghty recipe and I've got to get out and run errands this morning. What sort of foods are normally served during Chanukah? Maybe if you posted some of the traditional foods, others might have suggestions for ingrediant substitutions. Opps, while... -
I read a book called Dangerous Grains (focuses on how gluten affects the body, celiac disease and nonCD alike) and the authors do mention gall bladder "disfunction" as being related to celiac disease (as well as gallstones). Check out the book if you all get a chance. Its been a great reference for me (I found it on Amazon).

Yep, George, you are the personification of the old adage that one person can make a difference. Again, kudos to your efforts. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have Any Vacation Recommendations?
bluelotus replied to buluga's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I only skimmed the article, but it seems there may be a gluten free bed and breakfast, sorry if I am wrong, don't have time right now to read it all the way through Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Front Page Of Wall Street Journal
bluelotus replied to 4getgluten's topic in Publications & Publicity
I just wrote the author, thanking him over and over as well as giving a couple suggestions on other issues to cover related to celiac disease if he were to publish a follow up article (ex. gene testing, overweight celiacs, other linked diseases/symptoms that seem relatively common). Again though, much kudos to him for even touching the complicated topic... -
ARCHIVED Front Page Of Wall Street Journal
bluelotus replied to 4getgluten's topic in Publications & Publicity
This is great. Still wished that they had mentioned the obesity link to celiac disease, and so many Americans are overweight. It is thought that only a few celiacs go through the extreme weight loss and being an overweight celiac is more common. Then again, no article would be perfect, so a big kudos to those that pushed WSJ for the article as well as... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have gluten-free Chanukah Recipes To Share?
bluelotus replied to teacher1578's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I am not Jewish, but have had friends that are, so hope this doesn't seem like a stupid question - is challah bread served for Chanukah? I have a challah recipe from one of my Gluten free Gourmet cookbooks. Let me know if you are interested and I will post it. -
ARCHIVED Chicken Broth
bluelotus replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have used Pacific Natural organic and Imagine foods before too. However, please note that only a few of Imagine foods are tested for gluten (they will have a gluten free label on the packing according to the rep I spoke with). I believe that I was glutened by one of their vegetable broths (not labeled, found out about the labeling after I got sick and... -
Yes, this is a great website and has been so great for the quality of my life. Thanks much, Scott!!

ARCHIVED Anyone Have Problems With Rice Malt?
bluelotus replied to traveljunkie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think that there might be a problem for me. There is one product that seemed to bother me, I stopped using it, started again this week to see and it seems that I might have been glutened (that or I am getting the flu with a stomach ache). I want to verify that this product have rice malt in it before I post what it is, I would hate to say that it has... -
ARCHIVED Is Splenda Making You Sick?
bluelotus replied to Rae's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, Splenda and articifical sweeteners make me gassy and give me D (gluten issues aside). I used to get this taffy with fake sugar and I could clear a room It was horrible. Then there were these Baskin Robins hard candy with fake sugar and that did me in too. I gave up the stuff before I even knew about gluten, celiac disease, etc., but I still... -
ARCHIVED Gene Sequencing Reveals Gut Bug Bonanza
bluelotus replied to Claire's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I heard about this recently somewhere, but can't recall where....interesting b/c it makes you question what it means to be human when our bodies are made up of organisms that are not our own. Anyone ever heard of the selfish gene idea (Dawkins)? Kind of brings that to mind too - that we are just vessicles operating under the influence of genes............
