ARCHIVED Anyone Have Any Vacation Recommendations?
bluelotus replied to buluga's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I took a Carnival cruise in August to the Carribean (sp?). They did a pretty good job. I spoke with the head chef the first day and told him about my situation. They seemed used to dealing with allergies/intolerances. They asked that I not eat at the buffets b/c of cross contamination, but they were more than happy to serve me food either in the restaurant... -
ARCHIVED It's Official... We Can Eat Oats!
bluelotus replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So, has a 'sensitive' person tried oats yet? I am ultra sensitive and can't tolerate eggs or dairy, so not sure if I want to tempt fate with oats.........but still interested to hear what the results were for any brave individuals that attempted it. -
ARCHIVED Betty Crocker gluten-free Products
bluelotus replied to RiceGuy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can understand both sides. Yes, it is great that they acknowledge our ability to read labels and respect us enough to include accurate information. Kudos to them for treating us respectfully. But, importantly, they do not give any mention to cross-contamination.......I know, I know, almost always a risk, but there are companies that process lots of grain... -
ARCHIVED What Are The Possiblities
bluelotus replied to Moongirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What sunscreen did you use that had gluten? I suspected this past summer that mine might have had some as well. Do you know of any that are gluten-free? (Proactiv told me all their stuff was gluten-free, so I guess there's a face one that would work). Thanks in advance. -
ARCHIVED Watch Out When Feeding Your Fish!
bluelotus replied to ILOVEOMC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Amazing.....Is wheat not in anything? Hopefully your son never got ill from the fish flakes, and kudos to him for noticing. -

Wow, interesting info on maltitol....if anyone follows up on calling the companies, could you please post? Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Warning - Revival Soy
bluelotus replied to bigapplekathleen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sorry about your luck, and wow, I must say, their own lack of information is scary. How can no one know in the company how the company tests for gluten Pathetic. -
ARCHIVED Cassin Intolerance?
bluelotus replied to VydorScope's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My doctor basically told me that the ELISA tests don't work (well, anyway), so he tried to steer me clear of them. Still haven't gotten any done, but I guess there are people out there that might argue for your intolerance to gluten, etc. since the tests don't seem to work for everyone. Who knows, certain things work for certain people. Best thing to do... -
ARCHIVED This Is So Infuriating!
bluelotus replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am also sensitive to cross-contamination. It does suck. Has anyone here ever had a problem with Glutino (sp?) products. I've been meaning to look them up online, but haven't had a chance. I am not sure if they are processed in a gluten-free facility or not, but they seem to make a lot of gluten-free products. -
I heard once that they (wildlife biologists and trappers) think beavers may contaminate drinking water (well water, drinking holes) with Giardia. Kind off gross. I was sick recently with extreme diaherra (like pure water) and vomiting, turned out to be a bacterial infection (Claustridium difficle), but they did test me for Giardia. I am not sure if they...

ARCHIVED Loose Bms And Gas After 5+ Months gluten-free?
bluelotus replied to carriecraig's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
i was having a similar problem (as well as headaches, acne, and hairloss - my other more common symptoms). found out a couple of foods i thought were safe had gluten as well as a couple of my hair products. after about a week, i was feeling great and symptoms are gone. its been about 3-4 weeks now! i do have to stay away from dried fruit though or i... -
I don't get the discovery mystery disease channel. That show would have made me so angry anyway......I really hate doctors at this point and the feelings keep getting exaggerated. I heard today that a 15 year old girl died in Canada after kissing her boyfriend. She had a peanut allergy and had kissed her boyfriend after he had eaten a peanut butter snack...

Glad to know I wasn't hearing things!

Hi all, My husband thinks that I was hearing things (he wasn't in the room during the show though)....I thought I heard on Medium (NBC monday night show) tonight about her waiting at a pizza shop for them to make a gluten free crust.....Did anyone else watch this and hear this? I could be mistaken, but kudos for NBC if I am not....although gluten-free...

ARCHIVED Food Rant....
bluelotus replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know if you were replying to me, but I never implied testing to the atom, that's rediculous - I was talking about cross contamination, in which case, b/c of the risk, it is not going to be gluten-free all the time. I have experienced similar things as all these people below and have been unintentionally glutened for months. I solved this problem... -
This quote brings up a couple of ideas to mind: What is interesting is that even if you have the gene, you may never get celiac disease. According to the University of Chicago, about 1/3 of the US pop has the genes for celiac, but only about 1-4% of those people will develop celiac disease in their lifetime. I would think that many more than 1-4% of...

ARCHIVED Birth Control Pill
bluelotus replied to mtrubitz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I too am on Yasmin, and like Kelly, I love it. I was on Ortho for several years prior to switching to Yasmin and it was terrible. I had tried various products of Orhto's (various pill strengths, the patch) with similar results - moodiness, break through bleeding, cramps, etc. I switched to Yasmin and have been fine. I was dxd with celiac disease while... -
ARCHIVED What's Up?
bluelotus replied to Claire's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow, this may explain my recent hospitalization for bacterial overgrowth....as I had suspected, though my doctors had doubts (doctors seem to be the most un-scientific people I have ever meet - if its not in a textbook or they hadn't heard it before, its impossible......that ideology does not apply well to biological systems and if they just considered what... -
ARCHIVED Mysteriously Glutened By Amy's Kitchen?
bluelotus replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That new facility....wow, Berneses.....you actually made something happen! That's got to feel great. I appreciate it....more food will now be available from a wheat-free (though maybe not gluten-free) facility. Thanks for the update! -
Here is my understanding of it: You can carry the gene but not develop celiac. I am not sure if there is a defined relationship between gluten intolerance and celiac, though I think most believe the intolerance/sensitivity may develop into celiac disease in time. Only about 90-94% of celiacs have the gene, so the test is not 100%, though close (I don't...

ARCHIVED Food Rant....
bluelotus replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't think its fair either. To be gluten free means zero gluten. That may be the case (that the item is gluten-free), but seems that there is always that risk in 'shared' facilities - its definitely a personal decision, that is to avoid that risk or not. Sorry about your cookies. -
ARCHIVED Two Different Items....two Possible Glutens
bluelotus replied to Mahee34's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Fake sugars make some gassy (even diaherra if too much is eaten). But, splenda is gluten free. Not sure about the apple cider....are "spices" listed as an ingrediant? I've been glutened before by "spices", thinking that they would certainly list anything harmful....does not seem to be the case though. -
ARCHIVED What To Cook For Turkey Day?
bluelotus replied to racergirl435's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks for sharing the recipes! -
Your joke about Quinoa, very funny. I feel the same way as you about a sick child....any reasonably healthy person has a chance of bringing a sick child to term as well and we are all 'terminal'. It wasn't my husband that said it, but someone in his family mentioned it in passing. Very hurtful.
