  1. Well, crap. After doing a google search I found one blog that mentions the vanilla 365 milk is definately not gluten free. I must have grabbed the original, saw gluten free, and just grabbed a vanilla too. At least that explains the huge meltdowns my dd has had this week, lol. Nothing like the stares you get when you have to drag a 6 year old kicking...
  2. I seem to remember at one time the 365 brand of rice milk was not gluten free. It now says gluten free, so I bought some. Now my dd has been having a ton of meltdowns, and some of my glutened symptoms are coming back. Does anyone drink this on a regular basis w/out problems??? We've drank both the vanilla and regular, which both said gluten free, but...
  3. You just pretty much described all of my symptoms after a glutening! Not to say that is exactly your problem, since everyone is different. But the muscle twitches (especially an annoying eye twitch that I only get when glutened), messed up sleep pattern, loud gut, etc.....sound alot like gluten symptoms to me. I've had my dd's ttg levels checked not...
  4. My son has Psoriasis....he's had it since he was six. He's been gluten free for 2 years, and dairy free for one. This summer, his P has completely cleared up. I think the main reason it is clearing up is b/c he's been swimming nearly every day. But I'd like to think his diet has played a part too. In addition to cutting out gluten/casein, we do a cod...
  5. I don't have much to add, except that since it has only been 3 months since you started the diet, I would give it a bit more time. If you've made a few mistakes (as we all do in the beginning), his intestines haven't had a chance to start healing yet. Once you really get a handle on the diet, I think you'll see some weight coming back on. Also, since...
  6. Ack! That is hilarious!!!!! My kids are always embarrasing me, so I know the feeling all too well. I remember one time I was picking up a prescription for my son, and the pharmacist mentioned that it might turn his stools red. My son looked at me, and loudly asked "What are stools mom???". I tried to dismiss him, say that I would tell him later, etc...
  7. Grass fed beef is ideal, for many reasons. I just read Nina Planck's book "Real Food" and Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food"......which gives the low down on what is really in our food supply, and what is the healthiest diet, etc. Both were excellent reads by the way! Anyway, both cited the vast advantages to grass fed beef......but reality is...
  8. The severe reaction shows that you most definately did the right thing. My daughter never had the classic GI symptoms before diagnosis, but she was very malnourished. Now, she does get very ill.....vomiting, diarrhea, high fevers and lethargic for weeks. She is absolutely miserable, but these bad reactions have also helped her realize how important it...
  9. Everyone has given you great advice. I just wanted to reiterate how important it is for the parent to put on a brave face and have a positive attitude about the diet. The beginning is very hard, I remember going into my room and having a meltdown after trying to grocery shop. It does get better though, it really does . I can honestly say now (but this...
  10. I think you've done all you can do really. You've laid out the facts, now it's up to them to make the change. I have family members that just won't listen to anything about Celiac, and it is very frustrating. The more I push, the more defensive they get. I've had to just let it go, b/c this diet is not possible unless the person is 100% invested in improving...
  11. I work in a hospital and constantly have trouble getting my fingerprint to read for med access. I usually have to get someone else to do it for me. I never attributed this to Celiac!
  12. You are definately not alone in doing this....there are so many parents here in the same boat. I have one child who tested positive, but she was so very, very sick by that time. My other children tested negative, but I ended up putting them all on a gluten free/casein free diet. I have tried in the past to get my pediatrician's support, but one attempt...
  13. Our family of 6 (four kids) eats for about $200 a week. I have done it for about $150 a week, when it's not quite so hectic and I'm more organized. I think I do fairly well, considering we are all gluten and casein free. It still surprises me how even the littlest kid, who isn't even 2 yet, can eat an adult size meal, lol. And not that you asked, but...
  14. OH, and forgot to add....all four of my kids never tolerated breast milk!!! Of course, looking back now, they were all reacting to gluten. But at the time it made me feel incredibly guilty, b/c all of the books say that breastmilk is always tolerated by babies. Once I put them on formula, they thrived. So I do believe they all have different degrees of...
  15. This, and the post from Veggienfit definately explains what happened in my family. Now I'm really itching to get us all gene tested (I had to read the genetics post several times, lol, my genetics professor would not be happy with me, but it has been 10 years!) to see what we have. I have not been tested, but now that I've been gluten-free for a year, I...
  16. YAY!!!!!!! Your post gave me chills. Even though it's been a while, I still remember how remarkable it was seeing my little girl's personality finally come through after two years of pain. I wish you many more good days ahead!
  17. Hi there! Everyone has given you great tips, but I thought I would chime in too. Once you get used to the inital shock of it all, you really can be on this diet and not drop a fortune on food. Just stay away from the tempting and crazy expensive specialty items like gluten free crackers, pretzels (although these do taste great and are good for an occasional...
  18. Glutino: Pretzels Glutano: Haven't tried Pamela's: Tried most, but I'm odd...I didn't like most of the products Ener-G: I just use the flours Barkat: ? Gillian's: French Bread Rolls, they work great as hamburger buns I know it's not listed, but my favorites are anything by Kinnikinnick, and the Namaste chocolate cake. And one thing I could...
  19. Welcome, and thank you for sharing your story! I think many of us can relate to it, especially the part about just getting to know our children. My dd was 3 when she was diagnosed, and up until that point, I was honestly scared to be alone with her. I would tense up when dh would get ready for work, just at the thought of a long day of tantrums and screaming...
  20. We are all dairy free, including my four kids. It's been almost a year since taking it out of our diet, and we have been healthier than ever. I hope you see good results as well! As for calcium, there are alot of other foods that are calcium rich. Check out Open Original Shared Link, they have alot of helpful information. From this site, I printed...
  21. Today I came across "Domata Living Flour", a gluten free all-purpose flour mix, complete with xanthan gum. The website says you can sub it cup for cup with wheat flour. Has anyone heard of this brand or tried it out??? I've tried the Tom Sawyer brand all purpose flour, which was also supposed to be a cup for cup sub, but it didn't work so great for me...
  22. Does this include hospital gloves as well? I work in a hospital, and I've often felt like something at work is making me sick. I go through a TON of gloves throughout the day. I go in feeling fine, then like clockwork, about an hour later my stomach starts grumbling. I'll definately have to check them out further....although I don't know what I would...
  23. I'm tired of paying big $$ for dairy free ice cream, and popsicles are full of corn syrup and dyes (even the new "natural" ones from Popsicle). SO, I bought an ice cream maker. Does anyone make their own ice cream with alternative milks??? I bought alot of coconut milk, I love the stuff. I thought it might make a good milk sub for ice cream. I just...
  24. We eat at Chick-fil-a quite a bit. We know the manager, so we feel comfortable there. I just found out last week that you can order a kids meal with grilled chicken nuggets. The only other places we eat are Pei Wei and Chipotle, and Outback for special occasions.
  25. I usually shop at Market Street, it's in Mckinney off Eldorado and Ridge Road. It's kind of like a smaller scale Central Market. They have an isle with many of the commonly used gluten-free foods, as well as a freezer with Kinnikinnick items. I haven't really had to go to Whole Foods at all. If I go to any other stores, they are usually in Frisco. There...
