ARCHIVED Communion? I'm A 7th Grader With No Idea What To Do.
Nancym replied to Violinist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Congrats on staying away from the gluten. Even tiny amounts cause damage, you were smart to not do it. I bet you and your Mom could talk to the pastor and have your own bread or crackers there. They could even have a separate cup of wine for you two. -

How do you pass liver flukes out your intestines if they live in your liver? Those two things aren't connected except by the blood stream. -

My Mom passed away from COPD and heart issues. I believe that part of the issue is the brain just isn't getting enough oxygen and so it starts to deteriorate. Also, because the body is starved of oxygen it can cause some anxiety too, or at least that is what I believe caused the anxiety. It's a tough thing to face. I wish you both strength and good fortune... -
I just read that they think it came from a customer... but that's really weird, how could one customer transmit it to another?

ARCHIVED Son Age 15...just Diagnosed W/celiacs
Nancym replied to Joyzzz's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If it were me, I'd take the whole family gluten free. I think families need to be cohesive when it comes to eating. If one member is on a diet, the whole family should not be eating what the dieter can't have, IMHO. Perhaps you're already doing this, your posting didn't really say. But this would be my own philosophy and it was the way my own Mother ran... -
In my area a bunch of people got Hepatitis A at a local chipotle. I bet you'd believe it was one douzy of a glutening! But heck, that can happen anywhere, seems to be common in fast food restaurants. Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Those Of You Who Are Carb Intolerant --
Nancym replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There was one group of people living on nothing but coconuts and fish, I read about them in Gary Taubes, "Good Calories, Bad Calories". They were extremely healthy! Coconut is very low carb, btw. I'm not sure if you were joking or not but once your body makes the adjustment from being glucose burning to fat burning it isn't difficult at all. In fact... -
ARCHIVED Signicant Other Leaving You...

I've seen husbands and wives leave because they couldn't deal with the illness of their spouse. So consider yourself lucky to have gotten it done and over with before a deeper commitment was made, and broken. -

That's true, some of those symptoms do sound like hyperthyroid. I had the shaking. And it tended to make my blood sugar wonky too. But it was more or less constant shaking. Eating soup wasn't fun, watching the spoon tremble in my hand. I suspect I could have stabilized my blood sugar better by eating more protein and fat versus eating carbohydrates... -

Well, the grain/potato/sugar and food processing industry would certainly like you to believe that. There are many places where carbs are nearly unheard of in the diet. Eskimos, the innuit, and my niece's boyfriend's tribe in N. Minnesota (their traditional diet) is pretty carb free, at least part of the year. Many hunter gatherer societies have not... -

I like erithrytol and xylitol. E is great but expensive, X can be hard on the digestive tract if you eat too much. Google on them and read up, they are naturally occuring in fruits and other things. I also use splenda too for some things. -

I'm a little wary of using Agave syrup personally. Fructose is being associated with some really nasty things like insulin resistance and uric acid issues, which leads to gout. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link I'm with you on the avocados. Man, something I love, that doesn't bug my gut. What's not to like? -
ARCHIVED I Really Need Some Advice
Nancym replied to feelingbetter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Two things I recommend you check are your glucose levels and your blood pressure. Low blood pressure can make you feel a bit hypoglycemic, dizzy, lightheaded and stuff. You could conceivably have fine or even highish fasting blood glucose (BG) and feel hypoglycemic. This is called "false hypoglycemia". Basically your body is used to a higher BG and sends... -

Hmmm... I don't know. I think it'd come as it pleases. But if you're eating sugary fruits and starchy veggies it isn't likely that you're in much of any ketosis. Sometimes the body does weird things as it adapts to a new diet, I'd just give it time. To help with the weight loss can you eat things like avocado, nuts, nut butters, oils, and so on... -

If only it were sugar free, I'd be so right there! Agave Nectar doesn't quite cut it in my book unfortunately. -

Nancym replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would suggest you might be experiencing benign, dietary ketosis which is also accompanied with a strange taste in the mouth sometimes. After awhile your body adjusts and starts getting better at burning ketones for energy rather than excreting them through urine, sweat and saliva. I'm not sure how long it takes, maybe a few weeks or a couple of months... -

I just lost my mom, she was 87. COPD not celiacs. Anyway, I know emotionally what you must be going through. Ursa has some great points. The medication can be causing her confusion. Any chance you can take her to a geriatric specialist? They know which meds do this. I've read that anti-cholergenics are the worst. Also, a very simple, unprocessed... -
It has taken about 2 years for me to get rid of my "wheat belly". I also eliminated dairy too, and all other grains, so it might have many things contributing to the bloat.

ARCHIVED Elimination Diet...anyone?
Nancym replied to DElizabethE's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Sunflower seeds cause major issues in my gut! I retreat to meat and veggies when I need to test foods. After a couple of days my gut calms down and then I try to add a food. I give each food about 3 days. Sometimes I only need 1 day to figure it out. -
ARCHIVED Still Having Major Hair Loss And Zero Energy...
Nancym replied to LisaN's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might want to get your thyroid checked. Hair loss and fatigue are two major symptoms of hypothyroid. Also people with celiac disease are more likely to have thyroid problems too. -

ARCHIVED Grain-free Support Thread
Nancym replied to emcmaster's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Grains (or any major starches) always made me hungry due to the blood glucose rising and falling. What I eat I made a nice curried chicken salad: Chicken, celery, mayonnaise, curry powder, a few chopped dates, a chopped apple, lime juice, sliced toasted almonds, ginger. That was wonderful! I buy rotisserie chickens at costco a lot. Throw chicken... -
ARCHIVED Controlling Cc In My Kitchen
Nancym replied to dbmamaz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It seems like you're asking how to change the outcome without changing anything else, I don't think you can. Sometimes you just need to change things to get different results. But I suppose you could try to ban things that create gluten crumbs. That would be a good start. If you can, ban all gluten food. You mentioned that you did do that but stopped... -

I just saw they have a new pancake mix now too. I don't eat grains though, so I can't tell you if it is good or not.
