ARCHIVED Gluten Free Friendly (not A Chain) In San Diego
Nancym replied to Carbo's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I read a review about another gluten friendly restaurant called "The Better Half" at 127 University in Hillcrest. The newspaper review actually mentioned they're great with gluten free requests. I'm planning to go soon! -
ARCHIVED Is My Doctor Right? Diarrhoea?
Nancym replied to wilem008's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could be a celiac or gluten sensitive. If you go through the celiac testing and come out negative, go gluten free anyway and see if that improves things for you. -
ARCHIVED Charcoal, Gimme A Break Already!
Nancym replied to 1965kid's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Pure charcoal should be fine, it's the manufactured stuff they put additives in that you have to worry about. I'd be more suspicious you got cross contaminated when you ate the salads. Or possibly off the grill top too. -
ARCHIVED Grain-free Support Thread
Nancym replied to emcmaster's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Just wanted to mention a lot of folks have turned onto making "rice" out of cauliflower. There's all kinds of recipes for Cauli'flied rice and stuff like that. I made Paht Thai using cali-rice rather than rice noodles. It tastes great! Sometimes I just saute the "rice" with random things that sound good. -
ARCHIVED Whole Grain Popcorn?
Nancym replied to turkeybird's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
LOL! It's a marketing gimmick. Of course popcorn is made from the entire corn grain, it wouldn't pop otherwise. -
ARCHIVED Coconut Flour A Godsend
Nancym replied to draeko's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just google coconut flour, you'll find lots of online sources. I think I got mine at simplycoconut.com. -
ARCHIVED Grain-free Support Thread

Pele, that's how I got onto the Paleo diet, I was on SCD and realized it was very close to the same. You can google around for info on The Paleo Diet, or buy Loren Cordain's book. There's a message forum I linked in a posting above yours where people chit-chat about it. Lots of resources on the Internet. Some people like the Weston Price web site... -
ARCHIVED Synopsis Of My Last Four Days Casein Free.
Nancym replied to Woolygimp's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Casein is one of the proteins in dairy. Lactose, which you often hear of people being intolerant of, is a sugar. You can remove lactose fairly easily by fermenting dairy into cheese or yogurt, but casein you can't. So if you're avoiding casein you really need to give up all dairy. -
Yeah, you need to call the restaurant. And if they can't accomodate you, figure out what your Plan B is! Good luck!

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Tried Humaworm?
Nancym replied to Nancym's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I didn't have that happen. Just heart burn. -
ARCHIVED Grain-free Support Thread
Nancym replied to emcmaster's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I assume because it is often grain based. That particular recommendation I don't follow. Which version of a paleo diet are you following? I don't think it is off-limits on all of them, but I could be wrong. I guess if you truly want to eat like a pre-agricultural person they wouldn't have had vinegar, too much processing involved in making it. Still... -
ARCHIVED Grain-free Support Thread
Nancym replied to emcmaster's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yup! That's me. I post over on Open Original Shared Link and have for many, many years. Good to hear the diet helps you too, Gail! I find the key to not getting bored is having good cooking skills and lots of spices and herbs on hand. I've even got quite a few fresh herbs in my garden (and landscape) that I can use. -
ARCHIVED Synopsis Of My Last Four Days Casein Free.
Nancym replied to Woolygimp's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think there's a real strong entrenched resistance to looking at the typical dietary components because everyone likes to eat that way and doctors assume that people won't comply with dietary restrictions. So most researchers avoid researching that. Also, it is really hard to get research funds for anything outside the ordinary. That is exactly how the... -
ARCHIVED Muscle/joint Pain After 6 Years Gluten Free
Nancym replied to frec's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You sound a bit like I was. I had started getting "arthritis" in my 20's and by my mid-40's I had joint pain in about every joint but it was transitory and would move around. My muscles spasmed a lot too, especially in my neck and shoulder areas. Even my rib joints hurt sometimes, when I would breathe. About the same time as I was diagnosed with Ankylosing... -
ARCHIVED Grain-free Support Thread
Nancym replied to emcmaster's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hello! I'm grain free too, dairy free as well. I call myself paleo-ish. There are a few things I eat that are not paleo, like peanut butter. I find that SE Asian food, minus the rice, is pretty much mostly paleo. Have you tried giving up dairy just to see if you feel any different? I had a lot of things I had attributed to other things, that... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Tried Humaworm?
Nancym replied to Nancym's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm done with my treatment now and my gut seems to have settled down a lot. Although it seems like every time I get to this point something happens and I'm back to square one. So... major knock on wood. -
ARCHIVED Help Me Decide Please-pillcam Or No Pillcam?
Nancym replied to Sarah8793's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Would many doctors out there now even recognize celiac disease dmg from a pill-cam? It may be so new that they haven't really been trained to know what to look for. -
ARCHIVED Is Cc A Danger From "bird Seed"?
Nancym replied to toomuchagony's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I ran into someone who had elevated IgA and she couldn't figure out why because she had been gluten free a long time. She now thinks it was due to the bird seed she was using. I suppose that some of the wheat gets turned into dusty stuff and gets in the air, onto food, breathed in, etc. -
ARCHIVED Experienced Enterolab Users: What Are The Possible Outcomes?
Nancym replied to ItchyMeredith's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Because currently the definition of a celiac is someone with villious atrophy and you can only get that from an endoscopy and biopsy. If you've talked to many folks, or read their stories, here you'll find that lots of them were not diagnosed as celiac, tests came up negative, but were extremely sick until they removed gluten from their diet. Then you... -
ARCHIVED Background Body Throbbing/ Heart Pounding
Nancym replied to AliB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Couple of things come to mind. I get a hard pounding heart when I eat a lot of carbs, especially refined carbs like sugar and starches. This seems to happen to a lot of people. Another thing is hyperthyroid. When I had Graves disease I had a rapid (120 or more) pulse and the heart beat was really hard. I could lay in bed at night awake listening to... -
I can't answer your questions but Dr. Scot Lewey writes alot about this. You might check him out. Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Chronic Constipation For Years From Casein
Nancym replied to griffen88's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It's been known that dairy can cause constipation. Search for casomorphin in pubmed. Casein breaks down into morphine like peptides and guess what? Morphine causes constipation too. I always remember my Mom saying that "cheese binds you up". It really did in our family. -
ARCHIVED Need Help Figuring Out What Is Going On With My Sleep
Nancym replied to Sarah8793's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've had long term insomnia issues for most of my life. Strangely enough they started to go away when I began supplementing with vitamin D3 (oily kind). It seemed to help to take about 2000 iu a day. Your mileage may vary but I was glad to have found a solution! -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results
Nancym replied to Di loves pasta :('s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Enterolab doesn't diagnose celiac disease, they diagnose gluten intolerance. Lots of us don't have celiac diagnoses for various reasons but go gluten-free because we *know* how much better we feel without it. You're unlikely to get any GI doctor to acknowledge the Enterolab test because he hasn't published and the "gold standard" is blood tests and biopsy... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Tried Humaworm?
Nancym replied to Nancym's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't think I had any parasites, but I do think I had a bacterial thing going on. I think this helped with that. Although I'm at the tail end of the course and having a relapse so perhaps not...
