  1. This all ties in very nicely with my other autoimmune disease which it is believed by many doctors to stem from leaky bowel syndrome and bad bacteria in the bowels. Anyway, that particular diet is low starch since the bug believed to be the root cause eats starch. I was kind of feeling smug since I got dx'd with this after I started SCD which works essentially...
  2. Lynne, sounds like you know about this disease! Do you know if I should be taking folic acid with sulfasalazine? I noticed I'm getting a couple of side-effects, bruising and light dizziness.
  3. Oh yeah! I remember that show. I've definitely learned how to cook lots and lots of delicious meat since I've been watching him. My favorite is pork shoulder roast, I have a wonderful recipe if you want it. And I also like to make chili. I commit another SCD heresy and I use canned tomatoes as long as they don't have any illegal ingredients.
  4. Your Free T4 is just barely in range, its definitely clinging to the lower boundaries. If you've got progressively thinking doctor you might press for a trial of thyroid meds. But those sorts of doctors are pretty rare. You'll most likely get turned down. A lot of my thyroid symptoms (brain fog, weight gain, cold) I think were actually due to my food...
  5. LOL! It is funny you watch him, but don't cook. Well, he sure is fun to watch. I've got a lot of his shows Tivo'd. Often times I watch a bit... pause it, run to the kitchen, run back out and watch more. Its kind of funny.
  6. Right, but liquid splenda is not. At least the sort I buy. It is extremely sweet, 600 times sweeter than sugar, and cut with water rather than maltodextrin. Measuring 1/600th of a cup gets tricky without the water to dillute it. Lots of foods have chlorine naturally, mushrooms, salt (sodium chloride), etc. I've never felt this was a valid argument...
  7. I suggest that if you're wondering how to master the basics of cooking, watch Good Eats on the Food TV channel. He's highly entertaining and you'll really learn a lot! I'm addicted to that show. There's a cook book called "Garden of Eating" that might be a good one for SCD'ers. I have it on order. The reviews I found for it really praised the heck...
  8. The carrot cranberry salad sounds wonderful! Sounds like carb-flu to me! Withdrawing from a diet high in starches and sugars can make you feel like pooh for a bit.
  9. I just made myself some candy bars. I got some raw cashews, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. Roasted them. Chopped finely. Mixed with an assortment of dried fruit (also chopped) including wild blueberries. Mixed with honey and coconut oil (glue) and coconut threads (unsweetened) and plenty of salt. Combined and pressed into a pan lined with wax paper...
  10. I could swear in the book it says weak coffee is ok. It does say that on her web site: Open Original Shared Link
  11. Was it this one? <a href="Open Original Shared Link Advertisement/id1.html" target="external ugc nofollow">Open Original Shared Link Advertisement/id1.html</a> Ha! Apparently tripod . com gets turned into lame advertisement. Uh... lets see if I can outsmart the censor: Eliminate the spaces in this: dogtorj . tripod . com / id1.html
  12. Everything would be orange! Hey, it'd give a new meaning to carrot cake though.
  13. I took my first dose of Sulfa last night and other than feeling a bit sleepy, I was fine. You might want to guide your husband to www.kickas.org if he hasn't found it yet. Good support there. It sounds like people on the anti-TNF's are doing very well. I wish your husband and you luck!
  14. It took me about 2 weeks, probably because I skipped the intro and introduced my challenging foods right away. I also didn't quite the coffee because I have a major habit. I'm weaning myself onto decaf and intend to quit... soonish... probably. But my intestines seem to be ok with the coffee. I've been on it for about 2 months now and very gradually trying...
  15. I get rib pain. It is arthritic in nature and caused by ankylosing spondylitis. Usually it comes and goes in flares and hurts when I take a deep breath.
  16. There are people who don't test positive for the HLA B27 and still have it. I guess they diagnose from symptoms and xrays. I was very surprised with the AS diagnosis. I figured I had lupus. Yes! He started me on sulfasalazine. Surprisingly he said that AS is linked to "leaky gut", something I thought mainstream doctors wouldn't ever acknowledge exists...
  17. I made some. It was pretty easy. I didn't have the fermented soy beans on hand so I used prunes (with a bit of water) instead. Worked great, tasted wonderful. I just googled up recipes for Hoisin Sauce and picked one that best matched the ingredients I had on hand.
  18. This is going to sound funny but... I was thinking, wouldn't it be possible to make flour out of vegetables? I suppose you'd have to cook the heck out of them, then pulverize them, spread the mash out to dry then, once it was totally dry, mill it or else process the heck out of it.
  19. I think I got it at simplycoconut.com, its the defatted coconut flour, which I wanted because it is lower in calories. There are several sources of it online. I think most fats are good for people, I don't believe the cholesterol theory. Coconut oil has a lot of hype about it right now. I'm not sure I believe it all, but my intestines seem pretty...
  20. I'm pretty sure I have something else going on with the food intolerances. I'm hoping the meds my rhuemy puts me on will help with that. They're for RA, Crohn's and Ulcerative colitis and AS. Anyway, I am pushing the envelope of the diet a bit and probably getting ahead of schedule in introducing foods, but I just made coconut flour pancakes (almond...
  21. My rhuemy is putting me on sulfasalazine which is an antibiotic and also helps with RA and ulcerative colitis and I think also crohn's disease. I suspect I have more going on with my intestines than just food intolerances because I am eating a very controlled, careful diet and still getting flare-ups. Well, I really hope this works! I did read it...
  22. You might want to stick to a home made, limited diet and gradually try foods. I have found, through trial and error, that chocolate and almonds seem to give me problems too. I'm pretty early in SCD so I shouldn't be eating a lot things I am most likely, but I have a very stable platform of meat & veggies I eat and then try new stuff now and then.
  23. Yeah, it makes me mad. I don't think they have any clue how many people can't eat wheat. I doubt any of them want to eliminate a 1 out of 100 people that have celiac disease (or the possible 30/100 that have gluten sensitivity) as customers so it is just a matter of time and more folks getting diagnosed and they'll cut it out.
  24. It can be permanent in some regards. You can get a whole lot of other diseases from being gluten intolerant. I've probably got, or had, at least 2 or 3 already. Mostly autoimmune diseases. Certain forms of cancer, neurological diseases and even diabetes. Eating gluten causes immune reactions that last for months in your intestines, long after the physical...
  25. I've had to make so many dietary changes that make gluten free look like child's play! Seriously, giving up milk products and all starches was so much worse. But even past that, I enjoy my new diet now. Simple foods taste incredibly good to me.
