ARCHIVED Local Celiac parents?africanqueen99 replied to Lizzy-B-Gluten-Free's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs You can also ask your child's school nurse. That's how I found my first mom of a celiac child. The nurse had to get her permission and then put us in contact. Same nurse also offered to ask the entire district (it's really large) through the nurses.

ARCHIVED Gluten Challengeafricanqueen99 posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My 9 year old started a gluten challenge last week (on Xmas Eve) and I'm amazed by the results! Rewind: When my youngest was a baby she was dx celiac so her siblings were both tested and both came back in that gray area of "could be or couldn't be - we decide." Because the oldest hadn't grown height and had lost weight in over a year, had daily...

ARCHIVED Craft at DS's school... Am I overracting?africanqueen99 replied to Ginkgo100's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Well, I think you're over-reacting in the fact that you've left this door open for the school to make decisions for the child...and then you didn't like the outcome. 504 Plans are to HELP the school HELP your child. They can't know these things unless they're forced to. Please get a plan in place. Also, know that it gets better. The older...

ARCHIVED Gluten In Breast Milkafricanqueen99 replied to Heather-707's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Welcome to the site, Christi. The gluten takes a bit to get out of your system so there's no option of "sneaking" a little gluten treat and going back to nursing. Oh, how I wish it was a simple pump and dump situation!! If you truly think your boy is having an issue with gluten you might want to "gluten light" him for the time and then consider...

ARCHIVED Starting New Preschoolafricanqueen99 replied to peppyking's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My 3 y/o attends a public school district preschool program. Last year she was in the public school district Kids Morning Out. I had a 504 filled out before she started KMO and then we updated at the end of the school year knowing she would bump up to preschool this year. This is a quote from me from a thread a while back about the situation. At this...

ARCHIVED Daily Free Eating In Classroom?africanqueen99 replied to weluvgators's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Well...hell. I went to my 4th grader's curriculum night last week and guess what I found out? You're right - unrestricted snacks are allowed all day in this teacher's classroom. She has one rule - no soda. WTF?! My husband wants me to go crazy as it's not fair to our child that the others eat junk and keep her on high alert all day. This particular...

ARCHIVED When Will Growth Go Back To Normal? Do All Kids Have Catch Up Growth?africanqueen99 replied to albauer94's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Oh, yeah, my kid is still small. She's long and lean (just like her sister - and my body before the kids blew it out!). She's now 3.5 and wears 18 mos shorts. Still short, too. Like I said, she's got a killer catch-up coming along.

ARCHIVED Daily Free Eating In Classroom?africanqueen99 replied to weluvgators's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I am floored by this free range eating concept. It's unhealthy to eat all day (I can just imagine the carbs and junk being sent it) and puts your child at a huge risk. I know you can't answer this, but WHY would they even allow this?! I'd call a 504 Plan meeting. You can call it in - just ask the nurse (assuming this is a public school) to get the...

ARCHIVED Daily Free Eating In Classroom?africanqueen99 replied to weluvgators's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs By free range eating do you mean that children are allowed to eat anywhere and any time in the classroom? Or do you mean snacks at their desks?

ARCHIVED When Will Growth Go Back To Normal? Do All Kids Have Catch Up Growth?africanqueen99 replied to albauer94's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My youngest was DX at 18 months. When she went in for her 2 year check-up she hadn't grown yet. At her 3 year check-up she had gained SIX POUNDS (!!!). Her Ped said the average for that span should have been 3 pounds, but she is catching up. I practically danced in the office. Point of the story - it took 18 months to see that growth.

ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge For Mother Of Breastfed 15 Month Oldafricanqueen99 replied to Reffinej's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My youngest was DX at 1.5 years and I immediately went gluten-free with her so she could continue nursing for another 1.5 years. StephanieL - I must have read different research than you, because everything I read told me to either wean or stick to a strict diet for her. We never had any issues as I was crazy strict with what we all ate. Pre-dx...

ARCHIVED Do You List "gluten" As An Allergy?africanqueen99 replied to CeliacMommaX2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Yep. All of the above. I write "Celiac Disease - can not eat or play with gluten (wheat, oats, rye, barley). All food will be sent from home." in the allergy area AND the "other" area. I do it to get a straight flag to the nurse.

ARCHIVED A Week Away At Girl Scout Camp!africanqueen99 replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My oldest had a couple of summers at GS camps pre-dx. Now I refuse to send her. They tell me they can keep her safe, but I question that - and it's not worth the hassle when I can find alternatives. Last summer she went to a gluten-free camp in Georgia. She loved not having to thing about food, but the camp wasn't what her dad and I envision as "camp...

ARCHIVED Daycare And 504 Planafricanqueen99 replied to albauer94's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Yep, get some food in the kid. What about letting him pick some mom-approved junky food to eat along with his lunch? I have a friend that would send in a treat at every lunch. If any other food came back and the treat was gone she would stop sending in treats. Sounds fair, right? Until I had two kids that were struggling to not lose more weight. ...

ARCHIVED Daycare And 504 Planafricanqueen99 replied to albauer94's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Oh, one more thing. When my oldest was in Kinder I wanted the perfect amount of protein, fruit, veggies, etc. Now I just pack stuff without caring as much. If elementary kids don't love what's in the lunch box it all comes home with them. I'd rather she get some calories more than being hungry. This might be the end of the school year talking, though...

ARCHIVED Daycare And 504 Planafricanqueen99 replied to albauer94's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs It's ok to be nit-picky. I have made a school lunch for my elementary kid every. single. day for the past four years. I'm really over school lunches. But they're easy enough to get a good spread of food. My older kid helps me pack. I send a snack for the younger kid. In KMO the other kids are given a center-provided snack and hers is sent from...

ARCHIVED Daycare And 504 Planafricanqueen99 replied to albauer94's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I have two kids with 504 plans (current 3rd grader that got hers at the start of 2nd grade - and current *public school district* Kids Morning Out that starts *public school district* Preschool next year). I'll only talk about the younger kid right now. We met to put together her plan the Spring before she started KMO (she was 2.25 years at that time...

ARCHIVED Recovery Time For 15 Month Oldafricanqueen99 replied to shorebird's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs There are so many variables about how long recovery takes, but I can comment on the growth aspect. My youngest was DX at 18 months (after dropping off the charts between 12-18 months. When she hit 3 years she finally started looking like a typically sized kid - "normal", just a little smaller. I'd say it took about 9-12 months to go from the little twig...

ARCHIVED Better Batterafricanqueen99 replied to kitgordon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I haven't tried their products, but received their bankruptcy email via a forward through my local celiac listserve. I'm certainly going to order from them now - I feel an obligation to help companies that benefit the celiac community.

ARCHIVED Printable For Daycareafricanqueen99 replied to Brit1612's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My youngest goes to a Kids Morning Out program through our school district (public school) - so she has a 504. It started when she was 2.5 so they had to think about the needs for a young child. Maybe you could start that route - write up what you'd put in a 504 for his age and then meet with the staff. * Same staff member always deals with his food...

ARCHIVED Scholarships For Campafricanqueen99 replied to kareng's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My kid goes to Camp Weekaneatit (all gluten-free kids) and looooves it! One of the first things she worried about with her DX was sleepaway camp.

ARCHIVED Couldn't Get Blood Sample! Now What?africanqueen99 replied to KenzMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs If you'll be in the hospital it is completely within your rights to request a PICU nurse do the blood draw. They are used to smaller veins.

ARCHIVED Need A Leave-In Conditioner/detanglerafricanqueen99 replied to africanqueen99's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications Laura - it's straight, but very thick. She, along with a lot of her friends, brush the outside layer while the inside layer turns into a rat's nest. I can't believe how difficult it's been to find a decent gluten free option! I hadn't considered running into Sally, but it's just down the street. Thanks for the suggestions, ladies! If anybody has...

ARCHIVED Need A Leave-In Conditioner/detanglerafricanqueen99 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications My oldest has typical "little girl ratty hair". Same drill as most moms have - she doesn't brush it great, but won't let me touch it. We've tried Suave detangler - it wasn't good for her hair. Now we're trying Panten - also not good. Anybody have a gluten-free one that you really love? I'm willing to spend more on this because "kid" hair products...
