ARCHIVED How About Stress?
NoGlutenCooties replied to w8in4dave's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know well the I-JUST-WANT-TO-EAT-THAT!! feeling! I've only been at this since October and I already get tired of analyzing labels, over-thinking everything I eat, etc. etc. Luckily, I live alone so at least when I'm home there is no temptation. My boyfriend knows me so well at this point he bought me blueberries for Valentine's Day instead of chocolate... -
ARCHIVED Eating Out...recommendations?
NoGlutenCooties replied to KnightRobby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm relatively new at this and am only dealing with Celiac - no other food allergies or issues - at least not yet. And I only trust certified gluten-free restaurants. I did brave an Italian place where the owner has actually gone gluten-free and assured me that he understands the whole cross-contamination thing and it turned out fine. But aside from that... -
ARCHIVED Vitamins Before Biopsy
NoGlutenCooties replied to JoJo2310's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My doctor told me not to take any vitamins for a few days before the biopsy - but I don't think it had anything to do with them somehow healing the villi. Also, there are some supplements that function as natural blood-thinners. I know Ginko-Biloba is one - it is great for circulation. However, it does thin the blood a bit so you don't want to take that... -
ARCHIVED Which Dairy Allergy Is Linked To Celiac?
NoGlutenCooties replied to JoJo2310's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just wanted to add that casein allergies are not uncommon either. But that's also something people can have whether or not they have Celiac. I don't know if it is more common in Celiacs or not though... -
ARCHIVED Has Celiac Affected Your Professional Life?
NoGlutenCooties replied to CK1901's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I find it all worth it when about an hour after they're done eating they start complaining about how tired they are and how they're finding it hard to concentrate... meanwhile I feel great because I've been feeding my body all day with good, healthy stuff. -
ARCHIVED Bad Doctor?
NoGlutenCooties replied to C-Girl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Not just a bad doctor - but a horrible one. I would print out the pertinent information like Karen suggested and send it to him. With a note... "just so you know why you'll never see me in your office again - you are a disgrace to your profession". Back when I was in college I was having really bad abdominal pain - I went to the emergency room because... -
ARCHIVED 5 Years Gluten Free. Still Am Suffering. What Could It Be?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Pat Tato's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do you typically avoid processed food? Some folks have issues with the additives they put in gluten-free food to take the place of the gluten... like xanthum gum and guar gum, etc. Read the ingredient list on the gluten-free cookies... some of them are pretty scarey. -
It sounds like you've figured this out the hard way but a "gluten free" menu does not mean the food is still gluten free when it gets to you at the table. However, consider the situation from your friend's point of view. They're eating and probably feel like you're sitting there watching them eat. It would make me uncomfortable too. Try taking a snack...

Just wanted to add that while you don't know if your body might be able to handle small amounts of cross-contamination, think about the consequences of being wrong. Oops... must have had a bit too much because I had a full blown stroke and now I'm permanently paralyzed on one side. Even with being super careful there is always a chance to get cross-contaminated...

ARCHIVED Anyone Have Inconclusive Biopsy Results?
NoGlutenCooties replied to tealeaves1's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome. You have Celiac. Some doctors won't give a firm diagnosis without a confirming biopsy, but the biopsy can easily miss it. The damage in the small intestine increases and decreases over time and is spotty - and easily missed. But with these IgA numbers, you have Celiac. Go gluten-free. 100%. No cheating. No cross-contamination. If your symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Doctor Unable To Explain, Please Help
NoGlutenCooties replied to dartmania2002's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
On another thread somewhere someone else was trying to figure out where they could have possibly been glutened and it turned out they were getting their kitchen redone - drywall and other construction materials have gluten in them and the dust gets everywhere. You breathe it in. You swallow it. You get glutened. Any construction going on in your house... -
ARCHIVED Do You Have Dreams (Nightmares) About Being Glutened?
NoGlutenCooties replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I often have very vivid dreams and crazy dreams and violent dreams, so this one didn't surprise me - not too long ago I had a dream that I was on death row (I have no idea for what) and I was requesting my last meal. I was trying to get them to agree to let me eat within 2 hours of being put to death so that I could eat lasagna with a buttered roll and not... -

Excellent work! Congratulations! -
ARCHIVED Has Celiac Affected Your Professional Life?
NoGlutenCooties replied to CK1901's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would not allow him to exclude you from dinner entirely. Even if you eat before-hand and just have a drink at dinner - or if you nibble on safe food and eat the rest of your dinner later - or whatever works for you. Excluding you from the dinner is keeping you from making contacts, bonding with other Execs, etc. Insist on participating. -
ARCHIVED Searching For Answers
NoGlutenCooties replied to JigsawPuzzle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi JigsawPuzzle and Welcome! For the blood tests: AGA (antigliadin antibodies)-IgA AGA-IgG tTG (anti-tissue transglutaminase)-IgA EMA (anti-endomysial antibodies)-IgA Total serum IgA And yes, you can get a negative biopsy and still have Celiac. A small percentage get a negative blood test and still have Celiac. The tests just aren't as reliable as... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Tell If Antibiotic Has Gluten In It?
NoGlutenCooties replied to ValerieMarie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Don't forget that antibiotics also do a number on your gut. They don't discriminate between good and bad bacteria - they just go in and kill everything - which can give you digestive issues as well. Make sure to take a good probiotic for awhile afterwards to try to get things back to normal. -
ARCHIVED Going Home For The First Time Since Dx, How To Explain "kitchen Rules" To My Mom?
NoGlutenCooties replied to BelleVie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Every person and every member of any family is different and understands things differently, so you are probably in the best position to know how to word things to get through to them. But one thing that has worked for me is to explain that getting even a crumb is like getting food poisoning. And just like one little microscopic critter can make someone... -
ARCHIVED Glutened Myself How Long Will This Take
NoGlutenCooties replied to langone7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi - Sorry to hear you're feeling icky. I'm new at this Celiac thing, having been gluten free for just over 4 months. In that time I've been mildly glutened once. I can tell you though, based on reading posts from others on this forum, that the severity of the reaction as well as the length of time it takes to recovery varies wildly person to person... -
ARCHIVED Questions About Aches And Pains
NoGlutenCooties replied to tka's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't have any direct experience with what you describe, so hopefully someone else will chime in soon too... but if it were me I would start looking for another cause. What you're describing sounds extreme to be just from Celiac. But mostly I just wanted to say... you DO NOT SOUND CRAZY!! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! You know better than anyone... -
ARCHIVED Ttg Iga
NoGlutenCooties replied to Triomam's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My lab considered anything over 11 to be positive and mine was only 13. However, when I got the biopsy the doctor could tell just by looking at the lining of the small intestine that I had Celiac. I still have the picture on my fridge. The surface is all bumpy... like rolling hills. It's supposed to be completely smooth looking. She sent the biopsies... -
ARCHIVED New With Borderline Test Results, Opinions?
NoGlutenCooties replied to skelly247's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If your doctor told you that you didn't need to be eating gluten - after being gluten-free for 2 months - then you may want to consider either 1) educating your doctor or 2) finding a new one. Or both. FWIW... the whole "weak positive" thing from the labs I also find ridiculous... it's like saying you're weakly pregnant. I agree with nvsmom - if you have... -
Welcome Dustout! Ditto to everything GFinDC said. If your Celiac tests come back negative, you could still have non-Celiac gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, or other food intolerances/allergies (or of course it could be something completely different). One thing you can do to figure out what foods are giving you problems is to start with a very...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Low Carb, And Struggling To Maintain My Life
NoGlutenCooties replied to journey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Journey and Welcome! I know what you're going through is a common story around here - so know that you're not alone. I don't mean this to sound harsh... but just as a dose of reality. I grew up on a farm. I've been cooking all of my meals from scratch my entire life. I moved to an urban, over-populated area and I honestly never understood how anyone...- 11 replies

ARCHIVED Another Newbie.....help?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Triomam's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and Welcome! Yes, Celiac sounds likely but it's good to check it out and be sure. As for the endoscopy... OMG by all means go with the sedation! It's IV sedation, not general anesthesia so you wake up quickly. I was munching on a gluten-free snack within minutes of waking up. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED Importance Of Getting Professionally Diagnosed
NoGlutenCooties replied to JBarnett's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I read your previous post where you told us your entire story (thanks again!) and just wanted to say - for anyone who didn't read the other one - that YES, the poster did a full gluten challenge before getting the endoscopy.
