ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With The "haters"?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Glittersmith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep - they are definitely everywhere. I call it the gang mentality. If you dare to suggest that there might be a better way to live, you get jumped. The ironic thing is that we aren't trying to get them to change their lifestyle - just to get out of way from bettering our own. -

ARCHIVED Questions About Anxiety & Probiotics

I've had good luck with the Vitamin Shoppe brand - Open Original Shared Link It has 10 different strains of bacteria. Whichever brand you try, check the label to make sure that it doesn't say that it should be stored in the refridgerator. I've seen ones that need to be refridgerated... but there they are... dying on the shelf of the store.- 7 replies

Just wanted to add that it is not uncommon for symptoms to start suddenly. You're actually lucky that they diagnosed it so quickly - although, I know you're not feeling so lucky at the moment. Once you cut out all gluten - and you have to go 100% gluten-free - no cheating - you'll start to feel better and your gut will start to heal. But it takes time...

Sounds like the typical stress of the holidays. Unfortunately (at least at times it will seem unfortunate) you can't pick your family. But they're your family. I wouldn't take it personally that he called your things "sh*t" - he could have just as well as said "stuff". I would very calmly simply say, "remember this when you or one of your kids develops...

ARCHIVED Ode To Celiac
NoGlutenCooties replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think because it is so new for people that know me they're still thinking about it a lot... which is actually pretty sweet. I've already gotten 3 gluten-free cookbooks for XMas and my boyfriend keeps spotting gluten-free options on various menus, etc. that he never noticed before. It's just part of me is like... Enough. Already. I took it in stride... -

Hmmm... I just tried it and it worked for me. I'll try again: Open Original Shared Link I know as soon as I hit "Post" it's going to get truncated. It's on the "med-health.net" website. -
ARCHIVED Ode To Celiac
NoGlutenCooties replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks Irish - just tired of talking about it, thinking about it, explaining it, shopping for it, planning around it, etc. etc. It's become the usual topic of idle conversation with people... kinda like talking about the weather used to be. I'll shake it. It actually helped just to add it to the ongoing "Ode". -

ARCHIVED Newbie Questions About Whisky
NoGlutenCooties replied to KCG91's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
True that! I think where the confusion on this may originate is that they will sometimes add some of the sour mash from one batch in with the "new" mash of the next batch - prior to distillation. It helps keep the bacteria level where it should be and ensures a more consistent flavor. But they would never add it into the finished product. In fact, at... -

I agree that hormone deficiencies can cause hair loss, but I also know that it can be a result of poor circulation. Especially when numbness is another symptom. ARCHIVED One Advantage Of Celiac, No Need To Shave Legs
NoGlutenCooties replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have an issue with one of my eyes - it's a long back-story that I won't bore you with - but I take Ginko Biloba to improve circulation. It helps get circulation to the smallest blood vessels - which is beneficial to the tiny capillaries in the eye and helps to improve retinal health. I've also noticed that my feet and hands don't get as cold as easily... -

ARCHIVED Muscles Losing All Tone.
NoGlutenCooties replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
In my pre-Celiac days, when I was in junior-highschool and into highschool I had no muscle. I was a twig and couldn't gain weight no matter what I did. Shortly after college I had a body-mass-index test done and I was at 37% body fat but still under-weight. Since then my system has managed to get a grip, I started working out, getting more protein, and... -

I haven't had this happen, but your mention of numbness makes me think that maybe it's a circulation problem? -
ARCHIVED Is Gas-X Safe/
NoGlutenCooties replied to CynthiaSt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I suggest a really good probiotic to get some good bacteria back in your gut. Bean Zyme (the gluten-free, cheaper version of Beano) also works well. As for veggies, try blanching them but I would not suggest cooking them to death because that takes most of the nutrients out of them. -
ARCHIVED Diagnosis
NoGlutenCooties replied to racheltom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hopefully someone will respond who is more familiar with the unique issues with testing very young children - I don't remember the details, but I know testing can be trickier with the very young. That said, if you go gluten-free before the tests, the tests are useless. If it were me, I would go ahead with the endoscopy because you don't know for sure that... -
ARCHIVED Cures For Constipation?
NoGlutenCooties replied to pondy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know this thread was started quite some time ago, but just wanted to add that a teaspoon of apple-cider vinegar in water can work wonders. Start with just a teaspoon though - it actually tastes pretty good, but if you overdo it, it can work too well... -
ARCHIVED Meh, I Think I React To Chex :-(
NoGlutenCooties replied to anabananakins's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't do well with Chex, but for me it is definitely a sugar/processed crap reaction - nothing to do with gluten. If I keep it to a small bowl and eat something else with it that has decent protein I'm fine. Keep in mind, milk has sugars in it too, and the corn and rice in the cereal digest quickly and get turned to sugar too - so it's a triple-wammy... -

ARCHIVED All These Symptoms Can’T Be Celiac, Can They?
NoGlutenCooties replied to Integrous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Integrous - Welcome to the Forum! I know sometimes it is hard to imagine that something as seemingly simple as gluten (which is supposed to be a food) could cause such extensive and serious problems. But it can and it does. As GFinDC explained, you are not getting nutrients out of your food because of the damage done to the villi by the antibodies that... -
ARCHIVED This Is Just Wrong!
NoGlutenCooties replied to SkyBlue4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I see something that I may have eaten before but cannot eat now, I don't think about how it would taste - because that lasts for about a minute. I concentrate on how it would make me feel. And even though I was asymptomatic before my diagnosis, sugary food always made me feel like crap. Low blood sugar, heavy feeling in the stomach, needing a nap...
