I think there has been a direct correlation with my anemia and hair thinning. Unfortunately I have to limit my iron intake as I have a suspected blood disorder but I'm a rare case - under normal circumstances I'd be supplementing much more as I feel it makes quite a difference. If I were you I'd get your iron tested and then supplement if on the low side...

ARCHIVED Tooth Exraction Recovery
cristiana replied to cyclinglady's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That's so interesting, Gemini. I had no idea. I have had trigeminal pain and my dentist thought it might be a tooth so I got an appointment to have the tooth filled - thinking that the appointment would take weeks to come through, but I was given a cancellation. I wasn't thinking straight - normally I wouldn't go to the dentists with a cold but I forgot...- 22 replies

I hope you are feeling a bit better now - I;m sorry, have only just seen your reply. I wonder if it could be some sort of damage to a nerve. Let us know how you are getting on. -
Lipoma Or Angiolipomas? Or Lypomas?
cristiana replied to cyberprof's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Its good they found nothing on ultrasound. I was going to suggest that maybe it might be a hernia but I think an unltrasound would detect a hernia? When I was firs diagnosed I had lost a lot of weight very rapidly (about 10Ibs) and I was very bloated but also aware of lumps rather like you describe on either side, just above the hip/groin area. I asked... -

I second deb_rn's suggestion of oats (even those that are pure oats, deemed to be uncontaminated by gluten). Not a problem for most celiacs but I have had your symptoms on and off for a few days and I have just realised that a new shop bought gluten free cake I'd been eating uses oat flour. It may be sheer coincidence but I don't normally go anywhere near... -
ARCHIVED I need to be honest
cristiana replied to hwnw123glutenfree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's funny because my cousin's wife has said to me on numerous occasions that the thing that she thinks would be most difficult to come to terms with, as a coeliac, is not being able to nip into a fast food outlet or eat out on a whim. When I was first diagnosed I was just so relieved I didn't have cancer - which they thought my blood readings might be... -
New To This! Any Celiacs/gluten Free In Uk?
cristiana replied to Emma-jane88's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Just discovered that Mr Kipling are now doing gluten-free cakes and I found one in Tescos. If you have oat sensitivity check the labels but I have to say the Cherry Bakewell Loaf Cake is an 'Exceedingly Good Cake'! -

Hi again TS I've been thinking a lot about your posts. I remember hoping that when I went gluten free I would soon be super healthy, full of energy, a barely recogniseable, rejuvenated version of my former self! But going gluten free was not the silver bullet I'd hoped for. I think I'd set myself up for a bit of disappointment. I do know, however...- 24 replies

Well done, Clara! Great news that you are starting to feel better. Great advice from Jmg above, too. I can only say that I have seen first hand a friend struck down with serious neuro stuff improve dramatically from giving up gluten, and she like you is not a celiac. She and I still have the odd issues with minor neuro damage (and for me it's been four...

ARCHIVED Foot pain/bunion
cristiana replied to LookingforAnswers15's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can tell you that I have extreme pain on occasions with my two bunions (big toes). Often it takes the form of a really sharp 'bolt from the blue' type pain with absolutely no warning. Other times it is a slow burning feeling that has woken me at night. Then it subsides for months. I had it particularly badly before my diagnosis when my blood readings... -

ARCHIVED Unbearable Anxiety/Panic and now Insomnia
cristiana replied to This sucks.'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You're welcome! It is interesting what leads to anxiety. There are lots of different causes. In my case I think it was a combo of low B12 and iron levels - mine were awful - and stress. For other people it can be post-natal depression, overtiredness, bereavement - the list is long. And of course there does seem to be a real link with gluten as a cause...- 24 replies

ARCHIVED Unbearable Anxiety/Panic and now Insomnia
cristiana replied to This sucks.'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi TS Welcome to the forum. I am not perhaps the best qualified to answer all your questions, but I just wanted to say that as a person who suffered from debilitating anxiety very badly prior to my diagnosis, and has had the odd setback with it since going gluten free, there is nonetheless lots of room for hope. Please remember that, just because...- 24 replies

Another great gluten free menu! A great recommendation about Cote Restaurants from Gemini has just appeared on a separate thread. I have decided to share it here as having done a bit more homework I cannot believe what a good gluten-free menu Cote has. I am also surprised to find that we have one less than half an hour's drive away. Here is the... -

cristiana replied to tessa25's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maybe in the future this gadget will begin to look more like a thermometer - you just stick it in the food and see what happens! Thanks so much for the tip on the Cote restaurants, Gemini. I have just gone on line and there is one near us Sussex! Yippee! Thank you! I'm going to post your recommendations in the International Room if that is OK? I... -
ARCHIVED Coeliac not improving
cristiana replied to LiamAndrewson's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Liam Well done for sticking with the diet. You must be feeling very frustrated though. One thing that does come to mind is that before I even knew I was a coeliac my GP put me on some pretty hefty iron supplementation as I was very anemic. This gave me diarrhea and it was so bad I had a lot of bleeding (bright red blood) and I was very sore... -

This is a really exciting breakthrough. I'm just wondering though, has anyone tested food in a restaurant setting and then has been courageous enough to actually send the gluten containing food that was meant to be gluten free back? What was the reaction? I'm trying to imagine how that would go down with the staff? I'm afraid I've been in the... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With People Who Don't Understand
cristiana replied to weekendwarrior's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know of celiacs who don't help matters because they don't play by the rules and will tell people 'I can get away with eating a bit of gluten' and that kind of thing. I hear it so often. Things like, 'I knew a celiac but he/she grew out of it'. That doesn't help our cause at all. So I guess it makes things a bit difficult for onlookers who are trying... -
ARCHIVED News: Celiac.com: Gluten-free diet may increase risk of arsenic, mercury exposure

Thanks for this tip. I was wondering if there was anything that could be done. How long do you soak it for? Does it matter how much water you use? Sorry - just want to make sure I'm doing it right. -
Hi again. You've had a lot of great advice, you will find an answer. I just wanted to say that as far as my friend is concerned, she takes a very small dose of amytryptaline and the side effects have been minimal, in fact, I can't even recall what she said they were - but in her case, worth it! Try not to worry if you have to take it for a bit. I think...

I thought I'd chime in, too. I'm a diagnosed celiac (4 years this spring). I just wanted to say that if gluten is your problem you could well find that the migraines get less frequent, or might go all together, so try not to worry. Mine started as pain and feeling really sick when I was in my teens right through to my thirties. Then when I was...

Hello again I have read again and again on various sites that some countries - I think Japan is one of them - suggests 500 is a minimum level. I've got a busy day so can't stay too long to post - sorry - but you might like to read this. See what it says about older adults (not that you are old, but it mentions 500 again). I'm always interested... -

ARCHIVED Gone sugarfee
cristiana replied to plumbago's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I find that sweetners increase my cravings too. It's odd. And sometimes I find certain sweetners (not the natural ones I suspect) leave a horrid aftertaste for up to 24 hours. I can't quite figure out why - sometimes it'll happen, other times not, but that's one reason I'm not so keen on them anymore. -

cristiana replied to plumbago's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is inspiring! You are right about this obsession with food. I used to 'eat to live' as a child. I was really quite disinterested in food apart from cakes and chocolate, but as adults were controlling my consumption of that I was as thin as a rake. Now I can eat what I want (so long as it is gluten free) and although I'm still technically within my BMI...
