ARCHIVED Gluten Protein Destruction
tarnalberry replied to greendog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
the 33-mer (chain of 33 amino acids that makes up a section of the whole protein molecule of gliadin) that we react to is *very* durable. tests have shown that it withstands heat over 600 degrees. you can't 'cook' it out. -
ARCHIVED Syrup?
tarnalberry replied to Avarismama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
another option is to use a fruit jam on pancakes. yum! -
ARCHIVED My New House Is The Size Of A Shoebox
tarnalberry replied to imsohungry's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I suppose what I never liked about a lot of couches, loveseats, recliners, and "oversized" anythings, is that they just plain ol' waste a lot of space. I mean, most of those big chairs are kinda comfy (though, if you're short like me, you can't sit in them properly, the seat is far too long), and then there's gobs of wasted room around you (to the sides... -
ARCHIVED My New House Is The Size Of A Shoebox
tarnalberry replied to imsohungry's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'd also consider getting rid of the loveseat and recliner, and consider alternate furniture options. Anything like that takes up more space than you need. We *do* have an open floor plan, and our living room upstairs has floor seating. (Well, we have some exercise balls and two small ottomans to sit on, and one Poang chair from Ikea (that's our comfy... -
ARCHIVED Just A Wheat Allergy?
tarnalberry replied to splash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
there are a number of other gluten free beers to try (none are cheap :/). perhaps one of them - while never your old beloved - will become newly appreciated? -
there are lots of things to do that don't revolve around food - and it's that we're accustomed to things revolving around food that makes it so hard. that's one of the reasons why actively developing new interests that take socialization *outside* of food help. yesterday, I spent five hours with friends snowshoeing - you take your own food to that. same...

some people also react to the sulfites in wine and find they do better with organic wine. in cases like this, though, it gets tough to adapt around - one thing after another, and you just wonder when it stops. but there's nothing to do but keep doing it. in a case like this, I might suggest looking for pleasures in life outside of the food realm. playing...

ARCHIVED Just A Wheat Allergy?
tarnalberry replied to splash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
there's not much you can do other than test it dietarily. an allergist will look for IgE allergies, not IgG intolerances. you may have a negative IgA, and still have celiac, particularly if you're IgA deficient (not uncommon in celiacs), and the DNA tests don't cover 100% of celiac cases). your symptoms sound pretty classic celiac, and not very much... -
ARCHIVED Tentative Dx And A Lot Of Questions..
tarnalberry replied to ConfusedMommaof3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
you can order them off the internet, but you can also use corn tortillas (regular ones, in most every store) or lettuce leaves to 'roll up' sandwich fixings, or just find alternatives to sandwiches all together. I know, that can seem shockingly drastic after we've all spent decades thinking that lunch means a sandwich! and it's true that they're awfully... -
ARCHIVED Tentative Dx And A Lot Of Questions..
tarnalberry replied to ConfusedMommaof3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
the best way to get started, in my opinion - and we do all vary on this - is to stick to whole, naturally gluten free foods, until you learn what regularly available, mainstream foods are gluten free. that may mean that sandwiches are out, but a dinner of chicken, veggies, and rice is healthy, gluten free (assuming you don't add broths or prepackaged spice... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Cook Something For 15-20 Guests?
tarnalberry replied to alamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
you can make a number of easy dishes and not everyone has to eat the same thing. I've cooked for that number a couple of times before, and things like pasta, stir-fries (particularly a couple different kinds), soups/stews, and casseroles work really well. having appetizers (fresh veggies, for instance) helps too, as the meal itself doesn't have to be so... -
another reason to not have too much of the gluten free substitutes, but mostly eat whole, naturally gluten free foods - with good fats and plenty of fiber and not a lot of artificial sugars to drive up triglycerides. also, exercise will help lower cholesterol as well.

yep, when I was a kid, I had that happen. it was a burst ear drum, from an ear infection. but that should hurt, you say? the doc said the same thing, because the inside of my ear was very swollen, but it didn't hurt! it was just in bad shape. doctor, tomorrow morning. from what I had learned, it's not quite ER worthy, but it's also not "oh, yes...

ARCHIVED Hormones And Food Sensitivities, Are They Related?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
there are a number of hormone receptors in the digestive system. exactly how they are all related, I don't think anyone knows the details of. hopefully an endocrinologist and/or GI working together should be able to piece some things together, however. -
ARCHIVED Stomach Virus I Just Can't Shake
tarnalberry replied to HAK1031's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
if you're staying dehydrated, and so nauseous you can't keep liquids down, you can ask your doc for meds to keep the nausea down. before that, however, I'd try drinking some tea - ginger with lemon and honey. (the carbs from the honey seem to help, and the ginger helps ease nausea.) barring that, the most liquid-y soup you can keep down. -

silicon dioxide should be gluten free (barring CC, of course ) -
ARCHIVED Family Sues Mcdonald's Over Undisclosed Ingredient
tarnalberry replied to Respira's topic in Publications & Publicity
The ingredient in question has been tested as being gluten-free. Of course, as with any laboratory test, there is a limit to how small a quantity can be detected, but that quantity is lower than what has been studied as being triggering to celiacs. We all know that plenty of people suspect/know that they react to less than that, but we have to be intelligent... -
ARCHIVED Headaches And Sleep Problems
tarnalberry replied to missnbagels's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Migraines can also often be caused my muscular tension - and that tension doesn't have to be caused by emotional stress, it can be caused by physical stress. One of my triggers is a forward head posture that creates significant strain on the SCM (sternocleoidmastoid) muscle that runs from the sternum (and clavical) to the mastoid (just behind the ear). ... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Eating Houseguests
tarnalberry replied to Helena's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It can seem odd to ask people to by hyper vigilant. You're kind of saying "here, I'm going to give you this stuff we treat as poison around here. please treat it as poison too." asking them to take that responsibility as well, with someone that you're giving a negative connotation, has a weird vibe, I'll grant you. but minimizing the situation (not serving... -
ARCHIVED Fiber Supplements?
tarnalberry replied to Morrisun's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I stick to whole foods - fruits and vegetables can get you 30g of fiber (soluble and insoluble) a day more easily than it may seem. But things like flax meal, nuts, and some of the gluten free whole grains (like quinoa and amaranth) can help. (I have quinoa flakes with flax meal on top for breakfast - I can make it at work - now there's fiber for ya!) ... -
ARCHIVED Family Sues Mcdonald's Over Undisclosed Ingredient
tarnalberry replied to Respira's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think we're likely dealing with a CC issue here, and to sue over that is ridiculous. If you are a celiac who knows that you have extreme reactions to even the most trace amounts of gluten, you have no space in your life for CC - and any place that has gluten in it has the possibility of CC. If you were extraordinarily allergic to peanuts (to the point... -
almost as interesting as the article are the comments on it. some people - including a couple doctors - hate the idea of people asking lots of questions. /eyeroll

ARCHIVED Labeled Gluten Free, But Not!
tarnalberry replied to highrentsmile's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
if you ever have bread, or cereal, or a granola bar in your kitchen, YOUR KITCHEN is a shared manufacturing line. sure, you have cleaning processes between 'runs', but it's still shared. and that's why I don't worry about it overly much, depending on the product and how I'm feeling. the equipment versus facility differentiation is fair as well; it's always... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Eating Houseguests
tarnalberry replied to Helena's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
if I'm serving, everything is Gluten-free Casein-free. no one complains - I generally get rave reviews. if people are bringing food over (not to share, but say we're going to play rock band, and I'm not serving dinner, and people stop by subway to bring a sandwich because they didn't eat first), I make sure they eat on plates, and clean up after them, and... -
I have fibro, but it does not appear to be connected to food intolerances. (I do not subscribe to Ursa's theory that it is *always* caused by intolerances. Sometimes, perhaps, but not always.) You may find improvement, to a greater or lesser degree, going gluten free. Same thing with weight loss. It varies by person. I would suggest trying the diet...
