  1. not only that, but you can be sensitive to any of the subtypes of casein. while it is more common to be sensitive to the subtypes more predominant in cow's milk, it's not the only one people are sensitive to. and if you are highly sensitive to it, even the very small quantities present in other species of milk.
  2. It's a risk you take eating out, and it helps to go into it knowing that, and prepared for it. The risk is lower if you're going to a place you know already, and getting something you've had before and know to be safe, but it's not zero even in a case like that. I'm not trying to be snarky or anything, just trying to note that reminding yourself that it...
  3. many here who have had migraines in the past found theirs to go away when they went gluten free. it doesn't work for everyone, and I presume that they did a sinus CT and all that as well. mine got worse (when I moved, long after I went gluten free) and I'm on daily preventatives, and I'm not the only one here who didn't find it was connected, but many did...
  4. I thought I replied, but must have messed that up. Anywho... I don't have a brand recommendation, but a D3 supplement is the way to go. Sunlight is the better way (as mentioned, 10-15 min/day without sunscreen), but right now, at your latitude, you're not going to get enough UV-B to produce much D, so don't rely on that until spring. You can build up...
  5. I'm guessing that you have at least two shelves - you can split them between yourself/your fiance, and your roommates. (Or whatever distribution is fair.) There *is* a way to split it, even if you only have four feet of shelving, you can split it in half. You can store your things in your room if you have to, even if it's a very tight fit. (I know how...
  6. Open Original Shared Link supports protein as an appetite suppressant. (Keep in mind they only looked at one chemical marker of hunger, so this isn't the end-all as it's presented in the poorly written article...)
  7. That's why you tell him "I don't care if you understand or not. You are going to respect our decisions whether you agree with them or not, because it's the respectable, human thing to do."
  8. Don't forget to head over to Open Original Shared Link and check out your free credit reports for the year. They won't tell you your credit score, but you can check to make sure that no one's masquerading as you and doing damage to your credit history (and make sure that you're doing the best by your credit rating as you can). You can also see 'potential...
  9. it's kinda like pregnancy - you're either positive or negative. a weak positive is still a positive. if she's producing antibodies against her own tissue when she eats gluten (which is what that test is picking up), she's got it.
  10. You need to talk to him, and ask him why he is being disrespectful. Not why he doesn't believe her, because he can choose not to believe her and you all he likes, but he can still respect your choices. He's being infantile in his behavior, and you should not, in away way, tolerate it or not call him on it.
  11. because plenty of us didn't have clear test results the first time. makes it hard to expect anything from followup tests. :/ for those that did have clear tests, however, followup testing is a good idea if they find that they can't figure out if they are doing better or not.
  12. tests aren't accurate in young children, which is probably (hopefully) one of the reasons they waited. additionally, false positives are pretty much unheard of, outside of the lab returning you someone else's results. her being underweight IS a symptom, but many people - particularly children - show few of the major symptoms like diahrea or significant...
  13. I mean no offense, but that is a horrid, horrid thing to do. If you had a peanut allergy, but hadn't had it confirmed by the allergist yet, would they serve you peanuts to see you whisked off ot the ER with an anaphylactic reaction? I would encourage you to not accept any more food from them. Ever. What they do is borderline abusive, the only thing making...
  14. I just eat avocados straight up - that's pretty easy to prepare. They're also good on lentils - if lentils count as "no starch" - for a pretty darn healthy, and tasty meal. (Trader Joes has precooked, refrigerated lentils, to make for truly lazy preparation.) You can also mix them with tuna fish - that's tasty, especially with salsa. Coconut... not...
  15. I have no advice or suggestions to offer, but wanted to offer *hugs*. My mother had severe kidney issues, at one point having about 5% function of her kidneys (it was congenital - chronic nephritis), so I know it can be very tough. I hope they find out something soon.
  16. Yes, when they "bread" items for the gluten-free menu, they use cornstarch
  17. you've been not eating out or at friend's houses? changed out all suspicious cookware (colanders/strainers, wooden spoons/cutting boards, toasters)? checked all suspicious ingredients for gluten-containing non-wheat ingredients? checked all medications and vitamins? (just checking) Sometimes, if there's been a lot of damage, it can take a year (at...
  18. I don't know about that one in particular, because I greatly dislike the taste of LaChoy, but you can make your own teriyaki sauce: Open Original Shared Link
  19. it depends on what else he's taking in. if I eat too many banana muffins, with all their flax meal, I'll get looser stools. if I come across something that doesn't sit well with my stomach, (sometimes happens at a restaurant, and I don't think it's gluten, because that usually has the opposite effect on me), I'll get it. if I get a stomach virus, that...
  20. some joint pain while pregnant is normal, from my understanding, particularly if you're hypermobile, as there are a number of hormones released whose role is to make tendons stretch more. that's great for giving birth and (to a small degree) for carrying the baby, but it's hard going on all your other joints, especially if they already have quite a lot of...
  21. There are a LOT of people who are either asymptomatic, have very light symptoms, or have symptoms that are not GI related at all. It affects different people very differently, and you certainly could have run marathons with it (though who knows when it really was triggered). When you read symptom lists, remember that those are the symptoms that get doctors...
  22. Those thick cut oats definitely have a different flavor. My old-time favorite is steel-cut oats (not rolled out at all), and very thick in texture, and hearty in flavor; neither are *anything* like breakfast packaged oatmeal.
  23. 1. your doctor did not run a full celiac panel; there are at least four other markers that he should have tested for. 2. the dietary challenge IS a valid diagnostic test, and should be taken seriously. 3. the rest of your family (outside of your immediate family) doesn't have to believe your diagnosis, they just have to accept your decision. 4. your immediate...
  24. I'd look at him and say "Uh, you're testing me for ANTIBODIES. How am I supposed to have ANTIBODIES if I don't have the thing that causes them to be produced in my system?! This isn't like TB, where you produce antibodies forever and ever."
  25. it's because I like breakfast simple, but I order hard boiled eggs and fruit. easy, and yum!
