  1. I presume you mean "both DQ2 and DQ8" - as those are alleles of the singluar HLA gene that is tested for, and unless there is a chromosomal abnormality, then you only have two alleles. And something that isn't talked about the grieving process enough is that it is a cyclic process, that can go on - in some lesser form or another - indefinitely, because the loss is never regained.   5. I have heard of *fried* rice using broth cooked rice before - to add more flavor. Definitely different, and you wouldn't use the two interchangeably - well, no self-respecting sushi chef would.
  6. btw, you note that you don't like meat for leftovers - my husband doesn't like meat, whole, for leftovers, but finds that in a stir fry or soup, it's fine. as a whole cut (like leftover steak), he thinks it's rather icky, however. you might find that different preparations of different foods are differently acceptable.

The body adapts to how much water it needs - people who drink that much regularly find that they need that much, but people who drink 1/10th that (less than 5 cups a day) may not be dehydrated either.   8. have you tried the crystal deoderants? they're ammonium alum salt crystals, and while they are not an antiperspirant at all, they work by forming a layer of ammonium alum on the skin that bacteria (the ones that cause the odor) can't grow on. it may look more expensive in the store, but those sticks last for years!   11. leftovers really are my favorite way of doing a healthy lunch - when combined with fruit and raw veggies, in particular. I will cook my dinners with lunch leftovers in mind, so you might consider, for a couple meals, having something without meat that you can take with you for lunch - like a quinoa pilaf, soup, or veggie chili, or the like. another thing...
  12. I've heard there are one or two - like the one richard mentions - but I've never seen them. So I make my own. Very simple, takes all of 10 minutes, and the ingredients (aside from ginger) can be stored for long periods of time. As an added bonus, I get to make mine the way I like, which is with ginger and pineapple juice. Yum!

  14. Well, I guess "a fuss" is relative. But, having talked to waitstaff from many places, if you are polite and descriptive about your needs, they won't see you as terribly high maintenance. High maintenance are the customers who demand instant service, regardless of how busy the place is. Or customers who argue about whether or not the food is cooked properly...

  17. I think it's a good faith CYA. It gives people information with which to make their own decisions, but also provides cover. It's unrealistic to expect dedicated lines for all potentially gluten-free foods - manufacturing lines are expensive. But it's also very difficult to trace down contamination when we know we're getting sick, but have no insight into...
  18. Ditto mamma goose - many many mayo's are safe. Almost all vinegars are safe as well. Even grain vinegars are safe, as they are distilled. And most grain vinegars are not even wheat (Heinz white vinegar, for instance, is corn.) And, on top of that, in ingredient labels, there's a little law that requires anything listed as just "vinegar" to be cider...
  19. I don't know whether or not the food labeling laws extend to drugs - I don't know that they do. I would recommend calling the drug manufacturer on that starch (though there's no guarantee it's wheat, it could be). The apple cider vinegar, however, is safe, especially if it's pure cider vinegar as it's just made from apples.

  21. One thing that may help is to avoid iodine until it clears up, and if you ever get contaminated. Iodine is part of the IgA deposits under the skin that cause DH, and iodine in the diet (or in skin products) will exacerbate and prolong DH.
  22. THAT is the whole point of the flu shot. That the population, as a whole, may come down with other viruses, but the incident rate of severe cases of the flu - and hence, severe complications from the flu - will be dramatically reduced.
  23. I really am intensely curious about this broth in the sushi rice thing... It just makes no sense. I wonder if it's a regional thing? I've *never* seen a real sushi rice recipe with it. I do believe you guys that they said this and they do this, but I remain boggled that they would! I don't know why any vinegar used in sushi rice would have gluten...

Yep - those particular bars (and many like them) have malt, and the labeling laws don't require any further disclosure than what you see in the ingredients, as malt is usually barley derived, and barley is not one of the eight major allergens.   25. Actually, it wasn't last year they got the wrong strain, it was the year before. And they use some decent estimating, looking at what's popping up on other sides of the earth and in climates that support the flu at the time of estimating to try to predict what will get to the US for our season - but you're right; it's a guestimate. I'm not sure why it shocks...
