ARCHIVED Does This Sound Familiar ?
tarnalberry replied to Mary Contrary's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, being gluten-free for that long will affect your results, and good for you for listening to your body! -
ARCHIVED Happy Birthday Jen Van
tarnalberry replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Happy Birthday! -
Thank you for being a part of the board too! While I personally just love to see that little kitty in your avatar the most, I also love the help and advice you give to everyone. And that includes the questions you ask, because I sure know that I learn from answering questions as well as asking them.

ARCHIVED A Bit Of Market Research...
tarnalberry replied to elye's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Pastries would be lovely. And sourdough bread. What makes me keep from trying things? * Excessive use of refined flours making for products unsuitable for those without extremely stable blood sugar. * High price, even for small sample sizes. (I'm willing to pay higher prices if I can try a sample size of something for a reasonable price.) * Odd... -
ARCHIVED Could You Recommend...
tarnalberry replied to pugluver31902's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My husband (a picky, non-celiac) and I (Gluten-free Casein-free) prefer Namaste mix for pancakes. -
ARCHIVED Happy Birthday Judy!
tarnalberry replied to Rachel--24's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Happy Birthday! -
But we're talking about a turkey, which does not fall under the FDA law, but the USDA law. Different law entirely.

ARCHIVED Bran?
tarnalberry replied to hammondtam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bran is a generic term for Open Original Shared Link which contains a lot of the nutrition in a grain. Usually, in a recipe, "bran" refers to wheat bran, and that's mostly what you'll see in stores. But you can get the bran of many grains, and rice will probably be the easiest one to find to substitute in the recipe. -
ARCHIVED My Enterolab Results Are In....
tarnalberry replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You don't personally know they are not bogus any more than you don't personally know that the medical tests your doctors would run are not bogus, unless you do the research yourself. You're right - Enterolab does not have the published history that older tests have. That doesn't mean that all new technology should be dismissed because it isn't old, however... -
ARCHIVED What Next? New Here....
tarnalberry replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The tests are worthless if you've been eating gluten free. The tests look for antibodies to gluten in your blood - if you haven't been eating gluten, you haven't been creating those antibodies, or have enough damage to give you good odds of the antibodies getting through a leaky, damaged gut to be at a high volume in the blood stream. You must be eating... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Chocolate Bars
tarnalberry replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tropical Source does make some fabulous chocolate! -
It is *not* harmful to eliminate four (out of thousands) of foods. What you need to be aware of is the over all nutrient content of your foods. For instance, bread is usually folic acid enriched, but gluten-free breads are not, in general. So you need to be aware of that so you get enough folic acid from other sources, which isn't hard. Alternative grains...

As Richard stated, this is not about the allergen labeling law. This is about a USDA law, regarding *meat only*, that has been in effect for years, and includes *all grains*.

ARCHIVED Needing Guidance / Answers
tarnalberry replied to Chel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the board! First, I want to let you know that the feelings of being overwhelmed, depressed, and maybe a little lost are *totally* normal. You're both looking at changing a major habit that is practically subconscious now. And not just changing, but giving up entirely - there's a grieving process to go through there. Learning the ropes... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Vs Gluten Sensitivity - Please Help!
tarnalberry replied to cami's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, there's no scientific definition of non-celiac gluten-sensitivity. So technically, there can't be "proof". There is, however, scientific evidence of villious atrophy concordant with celiac disease that resolves on a gluten free diet in the absence of the celiac genes. There is scientific evidence of varying levels of villious atrophy. There... -
ARCHIVED Changed My User Name
tarnalberry replied to Ursa Major's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I got other posts to show up, but I may have had slightly different search terms than you did. Even after search engines re-index, there are cached pages out there, so nothing is guaranteed. This is the reason to never ever post anything that you don't want on the web. It may be there forever. Don't forget that other search engines may have different... -
ARCHIVED Changed My User Name
tarnalberry replied to Ursa Major's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
your post also has your first name in it, which may be part of the problem. getting 'unfound' in a search engine is *very* hard, particularly since there are cached (saved) versions of files (in their old state) all over the place. additionally, people refer to you by your first name quite often around here. -
ARCHIVED The Dangers Of Elimination
tarnalberry replied to Budew's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Being dairy intolerant myself, I wonder if that's causing problems for you (it exacerbates my headaches). I'm with you on the migraines - mine last for days (12 hours? ha!), and would occur far too often. Using a daily preventative has helped tremendously, but I don't know if it can be compounded. Good luck. -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Breastmilk
tarnalberry replied to mom-to-claire's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Based on the controversy, I'd encourage you to go to pubmed.com yourself and read the studies related to gluten going through breastmilk. There aren't a lot, but there are a few. -
ARCHIVED After 5 Days With No Power...
tarnalberry replied to lonewolf's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Glad to hear you have power back! We were only out for a little under 24 hours (I know, lucky us - we seem to be in some special spot just south of Bellevue that was luckier than half of Bellevue). We had a holiday party on Saturday, so I'm glad it did come back on, because everyone thought we were cancelling! -
You're trying to reverse damage that tooks months if not years, and nutritional deficiencies that took just as long to develope. 5 weeks is not enough time for your intestinal villi to entirely regrow and absorb all the nutrients to replenish your stores and bring you back up to normal levels. Definitely need more time.

ARCHIVED Problems Again
tarnalberry replied to Ash82's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
lol... I would prefer a doctor who would be that up front - over the phone. Of course, the important thing to realize is that the chances are very, very low. But, like all relationships, everyone's needs are different, and if this approach does not work for you, good for you for looking for a new doctor! Yes, if you're still having problems, look at... -
ARCHIVED My 1st gluten-free Dinner Party
tarnalberry replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Congrats! It really seems to amaze people to serve them a full gluten free meal, but it really can be so simple. -
ARCHIVED I'm Struggling.........
tarnalberry replied to Mountaineer Josh's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
"odd man out" is a frame of mind, and you'll feel less that way if you can adjust your perspective. I know it seems kinda silly, but it is true. sure, you're eating different food, but there are a hundred other ways that you can be just the same. (though, I don't know it's so fabulous to be just the same. ;-) ) you can partake in the same conversations...
