ARCHIVED Consultants Are Thinking About Giving Up On Gluten Free
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
additionally, gluten does pass through breastmilk (there's a post on here that lists some of the studies that show this, or you can find the studies yourself on pubmed), so that is also a consideration if the mother supplying the milk is on a wheat including diet. -
yes, you can get 'back on the wagon'. you may need to do some 'minimal' cooking to reduce your chance of contamination, but making hardboiled eggs isn't too hard, and fresh fruit doesn't take much work either. the other suggestions of finding things that are easy to find and gluten-free are helpful, and while I'm not a lot of help there, the others on this...

ARCHIVED New, And Lots Of Questions!
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As the tests check for a reaction to the gluten, he needs to be having gluten for a while in order to see that reaction in the blood tests. He should be eating gluten for a few months. The fact that he's so young makes it tricky - the tests are unreliable in children under two years anyway. With being so young, having been gluten-free for six weeks is... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Quit The Diet
tarnalberry replied to againstthegrain's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Definitely don't give up - with a lot of time and practice, it does get a lot easier. It doesn't have to take away all your freedom at all; it certainly doesn't impact mine, it just requires a bit more planning, and you may have to reconsider the way you think about eating. (It may mean more cooking and bringing your own food if you're out, or changing... -
ARCHIVED I Got My Blood Test Results Back Today!
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The "it's in your head" statement means that he doesn't believe you. In my book, if your doctor can't trust you to be honest in what you're telling him, you can't trust him to take you seriously. There IS validity in psychosomatic disease, but there needs to be trust developed between you and your doctor to ferret out what is pyschosomatic and what isn... -
ARCHIVED I Met My New Doc And He's The Biggest Jerk
tarnalberry replied to JenP's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And some days, when you've got a cold, you feel better than others, even if you've still got the cold. Symptoms are only one marker of how healthy you are, sometimes, unfortunately. And, with celiac disease, many people show *no* symptoms at all, but still have significant intestinal damage and increased risk of deficiencies, lymphoma, intestinal cancer... -
I would definitely make sure to always avoid your intolerances, but with the house remodel, please look into seeing an orthopaedist, who can see if there is a joint problem. I'm guessing that your doc didn't take any x-rays or look into anything specific. You definitely shouldn't be dx'ed with arthritis without the bloodwork to show that you have it, or...

ARCHIVED Limiting Dairy, Too.
tarnalberry replied to wonkabar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm casein free, but the symptoms are not terribly obvious and it takes a couple days for me to tell there's a problem. I *could*, I suppose, get away with stuff now and again, but clearly my body doesn't like it, or I wouldn't see a change (for the worse) after a few days, so why subject my body to it, ya know? Like many intolerances or food issues, it... -
ARCHIVED Tried Millet For 1st Time Last Night
tarnalberry replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
If you toast, and then use the 'just enough' liquid (I forget the amount listed on the package), it'll be much lighter and fluffier. I don't have any good recipes beyond the plain toasted and cooked with broth one yet - other than using it under pasta sauce or stir fry. I'll post the tabouleh option when I manage to work that one out. ;-) -
ARCHIVED Question About Celiac Test
tarnalberry replied to gabyy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's a tricky situation... You were gluten-free for three weeks, and then had what? two slices of bread a day for two months? And then will be eating a lot of gluten every day for three or four weeks before the test? I'd say, at the least, you're in the grey area. If you can push the test back three or four weeks, I'd do it. But you have a chance of... -
ARCHIVED I Met My New Doc And He's The Biggest Jerk
tarnalberry replied to JenP's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sounds like the second doctor isn't a good match for you. He might be a 'good' doctor, but if he isn't a good match for you, it doesn't much matter. Your first doctor sounds like a much better doctor, quite honestly, and he had the right idea, suggesting you start with a book, because most dieticians don't know much about the diet, so it would have been... -
ARCHIVED Oeliac Disease And Lactose Intollerant
tarnalberry replied to joalabbs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If he's just lactose intolerant (not casein intolerant), then he can use lactaid (the lactase enzyme) to still be able to have milk, unless he's REALLY REALLY intolerant. And in that case, there's still an awful lot of other foods out there he can have, you'll just have to start experimenting and trying a lot of new foods. -
ARCHIVED Tried Millet For 1st Time Last Night
tarnalberry replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yep, a tasty dish. I plan to try it as a substitute for bulgar in tabouleh. And you can use it in pilaf. One thing to make it taste better than regular: Toast it in a hot, dry skillet *before* cooking, until you get a pleasant, nutty smell, and can hear it 'popping', sounding like a light rain. It changes the taste subtly, and it, IMHO, worth the ... -
ARCHIVED Have Symptoms But Tested Negative?
tarnalberry replied to Guinevere's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You cannot test positive unless you are consuming gluten. The tests look for antibodies - reactions to gluten. If there is no gluten entering your system, there is no reaction. If there is no reaction to see, nothing will appear on the test. You must be consuming gluten (for adults) at a rate of the equivalent of three slices of bread a day for three... -
ARCHIVED Need Help With Toddler And Possible Celiac Disease
tarnalberry replied to sarahjo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just to let you know - her asthma may or may not go away or improve on the diet, though you may see plenty of other positive results. I too, would encourage holding off on surgery a few weeks to get an idea of the diet will make any difference on the symptoms that would be treated by surgery, but my asthma was not really impacted one way or another by the... -
ARCHIVED List Of Power Bars/gels That Are gluten-free
tarnalberry replied to Sandyo's topic in Sports and Fitness
I like Ruth's Flax Bars. (Some of the hemp bar flavors have gluten - always check ingredient labels!) They're the closest thing to a real granola bar I've found. (I don't do oats.) -
ARCHIVED Depression And Celiac
tarnalberry replied to sillyyak's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you're finding the meds aren't helping, it's worth talking to your doctor about altering them - different dose, different type, to help you through this change. There's no denying that the gluten free diet is hard to adjust to, particularly if you're used to thinking that you ought to be able to eat anything you want to. If you don't already have a therapist... -
Oh yeah, nasty contagious. Definitely see your doc. I'm sorry it's so itchy; maybe oral antihistamines would help? I don't know! Maybe they'd at least knock you out (sleep-wise).
-
I'm glad your doctor was willing to listen to dietary results. Some will, and it's a good thing when they do. Diagnostic tests on young children are notoriously slippery, and sometimes you just need them to be healthy, period!

a ruth's hemp bar - didn't realize some of the flavors of hemp bar (not flax bar) had barley malt and oats. darnit! it wasn't too bad, but still annoying. -
ARCHIVED Country Choice Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
tarnalberry replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nope, I wouldn't try them. If I wanted to find out if I was not in the group of 5% of celiac or so who react to oats (with my luck, I am), I wouldn't do it on commercially mass produced oats, but on the specialty produced oats that pay attention to contamination sources in the production and refining process, since oats are easily contaminated with wheat... -

ARCHIVED Gluten-eaters Annonymous
tarnalberry replied to MallysMama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I never liked Krispy Kreme. They opened one near my college when I was a junior, and a bunch of friends and I went out there, and I'm sitting in the back seat holding the fresh donuts, and they're all scarfing them down, and I tried one of them, and said... "ugh... it's like sugared grease". They all said "more for us!". :-P -
ARCHIVED Gluten-eaters Annonymous
tarnalberry replied to MallysMama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hot pastrami w/ extra peppers.... mmmm yeah, that was my fave! WAY better than any Subway sandwhich. :-) I eventually moved on to my favorite sandwhich being a homemade vegetarian sandwhich, but without the whole wheat bread (a particular variety) and cheese... it ain't the same... it just ain' t the same. Ah well, there's more to life than sandwhiches...
