    ARCHIVED Yoga

many people feel that hip openers, such as badda konasana (bound angle pose) uphavista konasana (seated wide angle), padmasana (lotus), and even to a certain extent janu sirsasana (head to knee) often leave people feeling a bit ... raw, emotionally, and prone to crying. the hips are said to hold a lot of emotional tension, in that line of practice. it's...
  2. there's quite a difference, and I haven't done pilates, so couldn't give a discription of the difference justice. I'd recommend yoga, but I just completed a week long teacher-training course that involved three hours of practice a day and three hours of discussion a day, and that was a very preliminary teacher training course, so I'm a bit biased. ;-)
  3. Yep, low-blood sugar. Just don't eat so many of them. You can have them, but moderation in everything. Have a dozen or so (yeah, yeah, I know it doesn't look like many), every so often, instead of sending your body into sugar shock once or twice a year. (Seriously, very low blood sugar is quite dangerous - and can send you into a coma in severe cases...
  4. The most important ingredient in salt-free cooking is time. Time for your tastebuds to adapt away from the salt overload they're used to. The second most important is using the freshest ingredients possible, particularly in the herbs and aromatics.
  5. Open Original Shared Link is the one I have (well, I have the blue, but it's currently $10 cheaper in black... go figure). Interesting enough, Amazon has factory refurbished ones for $54. I use this thing daily during some parts of the year, and weekly during others, and it's lasted... five years, with no problems so far. But there are a lot of other good...
  6. That is a good point - doctors like to downplay the negative side effects of inhaled steroids. Probably because, relative to systemic corticosteroids, they are pretty darn safe. That doesn't mean they're play-toys, in the objective sense, however. The better you can control your asthma by eliminating environmental (indoor/outdoor/food/etc) triggers, getting...
  7. you know, I don't get severe symptoms from casein - it's hard to tell I've got an intolerance at all. but I've got so many stupid little problems, that I just don't risk it, and totally avoid the stuff. I wish I didn't have to, and sometimes think I'm taking it too far, but why worry? eh.
  8. KitchenAid's uber-heavy duty one. (Don't remember the wattage...) I make smoothies thick enough that they don't come out when you turn the blender jar upside down (grab a spoon!), and it works just fine. I love the thing. :-) (They are like $70, but worth it.) I thought about the smoothie makers, but my smoothies don't pour, so I never understood how...
  9. Open Original Shared Link I know some of you guys (including me), enjoy this particular chocolate, and thought you might like to know.
  10. Gah! The Advair thing is overrated. The black box warning thing *is* important, but it's also important in context. Here's the background: Advair is made up of two drugs - that's why it says 100/50 or 250/50 or 500/50, it's the dose for either drug. The first one is Flovent, and inhaled corticosteroid to keep inflammation down. The second one is Serevent...
  11. authentic foods makes a falafel mix, or you can make your own (garbanzo beans and bean flour) that works quite well for burgers. (I'd probably add black beans if I was making my own for a more burger-y taste)
  12. How do you stay motivated for anything? By making a decision to do something and sticking with it. Gluten doesn't give me horrible symptoms. I get an unhappy stomach for five or six days, and some dizziness and difficulty concentrating and a headache. I get a bit achey and sore. Nothing even as bad as having a mild flu. But I know in the long run...
  13. Farmer's markets. Best produce, hands down. Whole Foods always has a good meat selection. Once you've got the two of those, you're good! :-) :-P
  14. lol... if you've got a stopwatch, allocate five minutes for dreaming up dreadful scenarios like this. or, just as long as their in the pizza line. you can imagine them getting horribly sick over the pizza, fighting for bathroom stalls, and walking around in a fog the rest of the day. but once they get back from getting their pizza, games over, time for...
  15. I'm doing yoga teacher training (the first of many!) next week! :-)
  16. I honestly don't understand the consternation. The pizza thing happened to me, litterally 10 minutes ago. I politely declines. They offered to find something else for me, I said it wasn't a worry, I brought my own food. It's not a big deal, because I choose not to stew in it. I could stew in it. I used to do that, a few years ago. I remember being...
  17. I'm a fan of Rainbow Light's vitamins. They're the first cal/mag/D vit I found in the right proportion. So I was happy to find their Women's Daily in good proportions as well. Oh my god, just quickly swallowing that pill with a large mouthful of water tastes like chewing on day old dry grass. NASTY! They appear to be good quality vitamins (dissolve...
  18. lol. I don't have kids... I bought the calcium ones for myself. can I claim that I bought them because extra calcium is supposed to help migraines? ;-)

    ARCHIVED Taxes

If you are itemizing your deductions, and you can itemize your medical deductions (they are greater than 7.5% of your AGI (I think it's 7.5%)), then you can deduct the additional cost of the foods necessary for maintaining a gluten free diet above the cost of a non-gluten free diet. So, for instance, you could deduct the added cost of gluten free bread that...
  20. There are many on here who have noted just that, but at the end of the day, as long as they accept it, and don't try to shove gluten down your throat, it doesn't, in the end, matter if they believe you or not, as long as they respect your decision. Actually, kudos for them to respecting your decision when they don't believe you (minus one kudos to them for...
  21. keep in mind that a 78% higher chance of getting something (over the course of a lifetime) that you have a very small chance of getting (over the course of a lifetime) still leaves you with a very small chance of getting it - even over the course of your lifetime. you aren't doomed to have lots of other illnesses. if you're feeling good - GREAT! keep up...
  22. I've had it while they were having fermentation issues... it exploded three bottles in my kitchen! Disaster! :-) I didn't mind the taste (though I've always hated beer, so take that as high praise from me.)
  23. I've always gotten along better with males than females (I can count my female friends on one hand, male tales more), and do realize what you're saying, but have never seen the males take the 'good natured ribbing' so far that giving him a bad time over it was a serious problem. Yeah, I'd seem them making a joke about it every time they go out, and so on...
  24. 1. you can get yourself some gluten-free beer, or gluten-free hard cider. or switch to distilled beverages that are gluten-free. 2. you can explain yourself, and if they truely say you're a pansy and treat you like crap over it, then they are jerks, and do you really want to socialize with people who will TRUELY behave so poorly as to value a beverage...
  25. Don't get the expensive, specialty stuff. Stick with the normal, naturally gluten-free stuff that everyone naturally buys, like rice, beans, meat, dairy (if you can have it), and produce. You can make all sorts of things from normal every day items, and you don't *need* bread. ;-) (And yes, you get used to not having it.)
