  1. I don't know... I don't think I really want to take more than 3,333% RDI for B1 in a day... (I'm not a fan of mega-dosing vitamins...) What dose have you been using?
  2. FWIW, this is true, if you're out of shape. If 30-45 minutes a day of cardio doesn't make you tired, sore, or worn out that day or the next, then you're fine doing that every day. As you get in better physical shape, you can do more exercise, but as you start out, it is important to heed your physical limitations, and those can't be categorized by anyone...
  3. definitely like my cuisinart!
  4. I hate that I have to defend myself over a statement that either wasn't read or wasn't believed... I was not cutting on barbara3675 in that parody. I worried she might think so, which is why I added my note in the same post as the parody which explicitly stated that I wasn't doing anything of the sort. Heck, I'm pretty sure I've seen similar skits on...
  5. D.D. - dear daughter, D.H. - dear husband (when not dermatis herpetformis
  6. I know where you're coming from, because I found that to happen when my inlaws were over and devoured all the muffins I made very quickly. I didn't hate them for eating all my food, but I was hurt that they didn't consider their actions. Of course they didn't consider the fact that having muffins around was a special thing for me - my mother in law makes...
  7. Good grief! Love is a strong emotion, and should be used sparingly. Too much of it could bring an excessive amount of positivity and possibly uncalled for compassion. Is there really that much in life to be so thoroughly happy and enamored of?! So I LOVE parody. :-P (Please note that this is not to pick on anyone in particular, or to reflect on...
  8. the b-vits don't work for me. I take them, regularly, but it doesn't keep me from getting bitten.
  9. It's too hard to explain. I'm 28 and too old to truely *understand* from the 'experienced it' sense, myself. :-) I do know enough to know it's not worth understanding. :-P (Then again, I had just started getting into the new-age yoga-hippie crowd before moving, so my judgement may be suspect. :-D)
  10. Any of that could have had gluten in it. You can't put ANYTHING in your mouth unless you KNOW it doesn't have gluten. "probably" can get you intestinal damage just as easily as anything else, and isn't worth the risk. the bernaise sauce could well have had gluten to thicken it, the vinaigrette could have had modified food starch as a thickener, the bisque...
  11. I HATE that I have been sick (getting a cold, had a cold, or recovering from a cold) for at least one third of the past six months, keeping me from actually ever being in a state of healthiness. I HATE that my migraines, while mild-ish, are so constant as to significantly interfere with my yoga practice, my work, my social life, my sleep, my hobbies, my...
  12. Eeek! Don't put non-stick pans through the dishwasher! Especially if you use a powdered detergent, but also because things can rub on the pan and scrape it too easily. It should be washed with a non-abrasive sponge, by hand, in the sink. If the non-stick pan was used for non-gluten-free stuff, and has scratches on it, don't use it for gluten-free food...
  13. I don't know. I haven't had that experience either...
  14. I have asthma, and have had it since I was a kid. It's not traditional "I can hear you wheezing" asthma, and it's never landed me in the hospital, or in an emergency, but it's asthma. I do not believe it is connected to celiac disease, but I DO believe that you can get symptoms that closely mimic asthma and behavior similarly from celiac disease if you...
  15. I have seen links between a propensity to get pneumococcal infections (not necessarily pneumonia the lung infection itself, but particularly blood infections) and celiac disease, which is why there have been recommendations that those with celiac disease get the pneumovax.
  16. I'm not exactly the shy type, and don't mind talking about this sort of thing, but over a couple going away lunches at work a few months back at restaurants, I didn't want to deal with it at the table. My coworkers are great about it, and don't tease me, bug me, say stupid things, or anything like that, but I get tired of answering even the well meant, spattering...
  17. I do the same - there's no need to pay for someone else to put together stuff with food that's been around for a while and is preserved in some manner (chemically, physically, whatever), rather than eating fresh, the way you choose to make it. Of course, I can't make my own rice cakes (don't have the equipment), so I buy those. Other than that, it's healthier...
  18. Hehehe.... that might have been my post. A few days into our honeymoon in Hawaii, and I stopped counting the mosquito bites when I hit 52 or 53. And I was using DEET!!! They swell up too - the smallest are the size of a quarter, the largest have gotten to be the diameter of a tennis ball (I kid you not), with Benadryl doing little to change the effect...
  19. Nope, it's not supposed to float. That usually means there's too much fat in it (the fat hasn't been absormbed by the body and is instead passed out the stool, where it floats, because it is lower in density than water).
  20. In theory, it is casein free. Because of the way it's separated, there is no 100% guarantee that there is not one single molecule of casein in the ghee, but it's awfully darn close.
  21. you can also pop regular popcorn in a plain brown paperbag (roll up the edge just a bit and staple - two small staples, at least three inches apart so that the microwaves, which are longer than staples, won't 'see' them) to avoid the nasty chemicals that are used to line microwave popcorn bags.
  22. artificial vanillas aren't made from wheat either - they're made from a derivative of the paper processing industry - of wood pulp - and vanillin (the aromatic molecule that makes vanilla taste/smell like vanilla) from either source cannot be distinguished. you can argue that 'natural' vanilla has other compounds in it that add to the flavor, but both are...
  23. Yes, but I know it's not the diet for me, because I've been on the diet for two and a half years, and it's just been the past six months or so of extreme unhealthiness - constant migraines and colds every three weeks or so. It's probably because we've moved out of state to a colder climate, started new jobs, and bought a house, but it sucks all the same...
  24. Just explain simply. You're not divulging a life-long secret, but you don't have to give him your entire medical history either. Just say something like, "I have celiac disease. That means I can't have anything with wheat, barley, rye, or oats in the food, or in the ingredients in the food. Even a little bit - like crumbs from croutons in a salad...
  25. Particularly depending on the type of buckwheat you got, you can't use the stuff plain! It's just way too strong tasting! It actually does work nicely, in *some* recipes, when used in great moderation (like, less than a quarter of the flour used is buckwheat, at most), and you use sufficient other complementary flavoring ingredients, and you don't mind...
