  1. You're grieving an external loss (that of your significant other) AND an internal loss (of the life/diet you use to have). Doing both at the same time is ... hard! My sympathies are with you. I think, as long as you try to be healthy, time and patience will help both wounds to heal, even if there's always some pain associated with them. If you're feeling...
  2. If I was unclear, I'll clarify that I have thought about compiling my own recipes, but would NOT want anyone else to include my recipes in their compilations. (Not like I think anyone here would, of course. Just trying to clarify if I hadn't been clear myself.)
  3. tuna with soy yogurt, or mashed avocado. :-) hemp butter. (it's green - a really disgusting color of green. but has a good protein/fat ratio.)
  4. It could be celiac, or a wheat allergy. Either way, he should be tested (while he's still eating the offending foods.)

    ARCHIVED Help!

Welcome. I'm glad you found the board. It will take a little while to adjust to the gluten-free diet, figuring out what you can have, and what you wan't to have. In the mean time, I encourage you to stick to whole, naturally gluten-free items, like fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, beans, plain meats, eggs, nuts, and dairy. Read the information you...
  6. Eh... you get used to the layout after a while, at least in the ones I've been to. As for Living Without - there's only four issues a year, I believe, so it's not always in the store, only shortly after a new issue has come out.
  7. It affects my bowel a bit (I think towards the C end, but I don't remember), but definitely not that severely. It's fairly common for impending menstruation to affect the bowels though - those hormones are powerful things!
  8. While I don't know about the snickers/milkyway/etc. variety, most bar form of pure chocolate is gluten free. always always always read the labels, but most chocolate is cocoa, cocoa butter, sugar, and soy lecithin for the processinging, with milkfat and milk used if it's milk cocolate. I'm a fan of Tropical Source's stuff - it's dairy free as well, and...
  9. Since the store does have the right to refuse to sell to you, it was probably a case of a conservative store policy. If you clearly looked like the parent, or the kids were much younger, it probably wouldn't have been a problem. But I know *lots* of people who would buy alcohol for their younger friends (usually not 14, but 15-17, sure) when they were just...
  10. Yes. Stress has a profound physiologic effect on the body, and the digestive system is one place where it has the largest effect. I would encourage you to investigate what stress reductions techniques work for you. If your job proves too stressful such that it has a huge negative impact on your health, that may be indicative of the need for a career change...
  11. 1. not all genes that play a role in celiac disease have been discovered. about 2% of biopsy-proven cases occur in people with neither recognized gene. 2. the known genes contributing to celiac disease are necessary, but not sufficient, for the development of the condition - additional, currently unknown, factors (possibly including infection, surgery,...
  12. Since September? Six months? There's nothing in the body for the immune system to react to, so it's not going to produce any antibodies for the blood test to pick up. In someone who heals quickly (and that's often the case for little kids), all intestinal damage can be healed by 6 months on the diet. So, I'm afraid the test is going to be pretty useless...
  13. for the banana bread, you can, but the results won't taste the same. the flour choices there were specifically due to the flavors of gluten-free flours - many are stronger tasting, sometimes more bitter, than wheat, and my husband hates most of them. the texture will change a bit too, but I think it will still be reasonable. for the rice pudding, yep...
  14. Veggie Rice and Beans Serves 2-4 Ingredients ----------- 1 - 2 cups leftover brown rice 1 can black beans, drained 1 can (14oz) diced tomatoes 1 medium zucchini, diced 1 orange or yellow bell pepper 1/3 medium red onion 1 tsp cajun seasoning or chili powder 1/2 tsp garlic salt 1/4 tsp sage 1/4 tsp cumin chopped cilantro Directions ---...
  15. Cultured milk. Basically, very similar to drinkable yogurt, but the cutures are somewhat different. It seems odd the first time or two, then you get hooked. (And then you regret it when you learn you can't have dairy. :-/) Trader Joe's carries some, Whole Foods and most other health food stores. Silk is making something similar from soy these days...
  16. What is this 'panty hose' you speak of? I think I had to wear a pair for a job interview a number of years ago when I wore a shorter skirt... And this hair spray thing you talk of? Is that what my teacher tried to use on me for the school play when I balked? (Honestly, I have *once* in my 27 years, had hairspray in my hair. Icky stuff.) :-) My...
  17. 2 months - NO CHEATING. Any cheating negates the effect of the test. :-(
  18. Probiotics and kefir. ;-) Most kefir's I've seen have more than 2 or 3 cultures. I believe Cascade Fresh had 4?
  19. pretty much ditto what elonwy said - I'm careful about my choices, and stop eating things that bother me. Not as black and white as some might like, but the best we've got, really.
  20. There isn't any Gluten-free Casein-free string cheese - you need the dairy protein to get the proper 'texture' for string cheese. Sorry. :-( Perhaps he'd be willing to switch to dried fruit (like apples).
  21. You can make an extra large batch of sauce when you *do* cook from scratch and freeze (even just in a ziploc bag). My italian MIL does this. :-)
  22. I have it (got it ... two years ago), and I like it. It has plenty of still-useful information, including a lot of good contact information, a few recipes, and some general reference stuff.
  23. If you want to stick to the basics, use dairy-free butter substitutes on pancakes, soy/rice/nut milk on cereal, or soy yogurt. Other things I have: peanut butter on rice cakes hot cereal pancakes/waffles with fruit jam muffins (made the night before) scrambled eggs (w/ or w/o a corn tortilla) any sort of leftover from the night before a smoothie with...
  24. Perhaps you can get them to take it seriously *and* not have it be a big deal. In our house, it's not a big deal - there's no production over it, and it's not a high-stress sort of thing. But we take it seriously - keep my husband's bread to one small area, and inform stay-over guests to keep crumbs out of the way (and expect them to do so). Of course...
  25. It's hard to say off of white rice alone. If white rice didn't give you a problem and plain brown rice did, then I'd assume the bran (the extra fiber, really). But have you ruled out cross contamination?
