  1. My MIL described the period when my FIL stopped smoking (when she was pregnant with their first), and they both pretty much said that he was a nasty son-of-a-you-know-what for a month or so. He felt like crap, and acted like it to. But he got through it, and hasn't smoked since. Perhaps checking a smoking cessation online support group would help him realize...
  2. I have slightly lower arches, nothing you'd call flat, but I do pronate (I role inwards), and have bunions (probably causally related). I don't know that it's related to celiac, however, as flat-footedness, particularly milder forms isn't uncommon.
  3. There shouldn't be, but you'd want to check with the manufacturers. Does it help him at all to know that it's just four days until Monday? Four days, in the grand scheme of his life, that can be a big part of breaking a lift-shortening habit... Good luck, to both of you, on his attempt to quit!
  4. I'm glad to hear she's doing so much better!
  5. They may not hand you the PI (either Patient Information or Package Insert) for virtually any pharmaceutical, but you can read it. If you don't feel comfortable asking for it before being administered the drug, then you can look it up on the pharmaceutical company's website (though you will have to find out what manufactuer is being used). This holds true...
  6. If you're gluten intolerant, or a so-far-undiagnosable celiac, then yes, it would make perfect sense that eating lots of gluten would leave you hungry - the gluten damages the intestinal lining, preventing it from absorbing the calories and nutrients in the food you eat, so may put food in your mouth, but it doesn't make it to your body, which decides it...
  7. Rather than using jerky guns to "smoosh" out a band of meat, I'd encourage partially freezing london broil, and slicing it, against the grain, by hand. There are a lot of jerkey recipes out there you can make (either without soy sauce, or with your own gluten-free soy sauce), and you don't need a dehydrator to do it (I prefer to use the oven, but a dehydrator...
  8. I think she's referring to soy sauce - soy is fermented with wheat to make soy sauce.
  9. The things to cut out are the obvious and not obvious: * most breads/pastries/bagels/muffins, etc. * most hot and cold cereals * most crackers and cookies * most pastas/noodles * most flour tortillas * most soy sauce and asian sauces based on soy sauce * most fried/breaded items * most pies/cakes/tortes, etc. The reason I say "most" on all of these...
  10. You are correct, and they are incorrect. Spelt has gluten (the kind that's bad for us).
  11. lol! a much bigger kitchen! we moved from a two bedroom apartment to a four bedroom house, with a large kitchen plus an island, and a skylight. it's condusive to making me cook :-) , but the 4:50pm sunsets are not. :-( it's been a busy month moving out of state, buying a house, and changing jobs! :-)
  12. It seems that part of the problem is a boundaries issue. Your friends/coworkers/family are over stepping your personal boundaries on what questions you find acceptable to be asked and what you don't. Then the key becomes politely enforcing your boundaries. If someone pesters you with "why don't you try that?" or "why do you always have this?", enforce...
  13. On the vitamin front, I recomment Rainbow Light's Food Based Calicum. It is gluten-free (and CF and the rest), and has, per tablet, 500mg calcium citrate (the more absorbable form), 250mg magnesium (vital - particularly for celiacs - for bone health; some studies suggest that, for celics, magnesium is more important than calcium), and 100IU Vit D3 (the more...
  14. lol! Thanks. I put my recipes in the "As Promised, A Few Recipes" post in the recipes section when I have new ones, which depends entirely on my work schedule and how busy I am. :-) I usually have two spurts in recipes - one during the holidays (Thanksgiving to Christmas) and one in the middle of the summer. Perhaps with my new kitchen (we just moved...
  15. I have not had a problem with their cereals - Nature's Path Cornflakes in particular. The osmotic effect she's talking about has to do with suddenly having more sugar than your used to and this pushing more water into the stools. (Osmosis - basically the movement of water through a membrane, and it occurs to equalize concentration of some molecules.) Not...
  16. Today, leftover chili. Last week, leftover beef stir fry. Other times, leftover fajitas, leftover chicken rice soup, tuna tacos, shrimp salad, lunch meat rolled in lettuce with tomatoes and mustard, rice cakes with peanut butter, hot cereal... And of course, fresh fruit and veggies.
  17. It is quite likely that those bars will not give you any problems. If taking lactaid is sufficient, it means that you aren't incredibly sensitive to minute quantities of lactose, and the only lactose that's in butterfat would be the miniscule amount that might have been missed in the separation.
  18. Hi! Welcome to the board. I hope you find something that helps you. Remember that, to be gluten free, you need to avoid more than "just wheat". Wheat, barley, rye, and oats all contain gluten. But so do a lot of other things that you might not think of, like soy sauce (and many other sauces), and miso (if fermented with barley). Read labels, reference...
  19. yeah, it's not a problem. sure, you end up eating a fair amount of meat - make sure to vary it (pork, chicken, beef, turkey, fish, shellfish and more exotic meats like bison, if you can get it). you may need to have meat or eggs at every meal if you're aiming for 200g a day (which is a LOT! even with normal weight training, from my understanding). beans...
  20. If you would stick to it, I'd give it a try. That's the biggest part, dealing with the responsibility. If you're willing to use barrier methods, then during fertile times, you can still have sex, but you KNOW you're fertile and you know that you're relying on the barrier method(s) you choose in order to prevent pregnancy. Then you can still have sex (as...
  21. masa is just corn flour. flour is just a finely ground substance (can be made of grain, seed, legume, nut, vegetable, anything...). it's fine! :-) (I don't know about the chili as a whole... never heard of it as a brand...)
  22. I think we're partly dealing with a communication issue here. They say "web search" and we imply one thing when they may mean another. They DID research their product ingredients. It's easy to make assumptions about what people mean in their emails, but I think it comes down to a "we're not familiar with this sort of thing, and want to answer well, but...
  23. Note: I'm responding in general, to the board, not specifically to Jnkmnky, just following on to the points she brought up. Women think that the hormonal birth control pill is "safe" because a number of studies (and it's really a very large number) have shown that for *most* women, the risks are *minimal*. That doesn't mean for all women, and it doesn...
  24. I've never seen a *plain, regular* turkey that ITSELF has gluten in it. gravy packets can contain it, so you have to avoid those. and all you have to do is read the label, as the requirements for labeling on fresh meat is different, and wheat has to be labeled. Butterball turkeys (without any special sauces/gravies/preparation, just plain) are gluten-free...
