  1. rye is one of the forbidden grains on the diet, and you are probably having a gluten reaction. but it also sounds as though you're not eating nearly enough. have some peanut butter on an apple, some bean dip with your vegetables, maybe some eggs, maybe some nuts for a snack, but defintely more food!
  2. Chances are, they could have taken care of you just fine, even if all they could provide was boring fair and you had to bring some of your own food. I do understand not wanting to undertake this so soon, but don't let the diet restrict your travel in the future, once you get the hang of it. (I'm going to Vail in January, and will be staying in a condo....

  4. Calling is much more effective with some companies than email. I called on a different product they made, and they noted that product was gluten-free as well.
  5. Yep, more information would be good. * How long have you been gluten-free? * Are you certain that you are completely gluten free, having also eliminated hidden sources and cross-contamination risks? * Do you have any other complicating medication conditions? * Have you been tested for vitamin/mineral deficiencies? * Have you been tested for other food...
  6. It sounds like you may be having a reaction to the makeup (celiac or not), and it may be best to avoid wearing it until you can both confirm the problem with your doctor and find a makeup that doesn't cause the problem. I'm sure you'll look just fine without it! (I work with a bunch of engineers... I'm not sure how many of us even own makeup... ;-) )
  7. No, a wheat allergy (that would be found on an allergy panel), is an IgE immune mediated response which, amongst other things, degranulates mast cells to release histamine. (A standard "allergy", though they often manifest in different ways in people.) Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease involving IgG immune mediated responses and would not be picked...
  8. Yep. So if you don't have any, or don't want to deal with the cost (ouch! not cheap!) you can either use honey (a strong honey would be ok in this recipe), or sugar, but use a bit more sugar than a cup, maybe 1 1/3 cups or so, unless you don't mind pumpkin straight up! ;-)
  9. I get my vit D through: * fortified beverages (soy milk/orange juice) * vitamin supplement (Rainbow Light Food Based Calcium - 100IU D3 (25% of DV, and D3 is the more absorbably form, 500mg calcium (50% DV), 250mg magnesium (63% DV, the appropriate ratio with calcium for better absorption, and one of the minerals that often lacking in celiacs when it comes...
  10. Bard's Tale is gluten-free, and not bad. They're out of production at the moment, but should be back to it by the end of the year.
  11. The Safeway up here in WA and the QFC have a smattering (and odd selection, but it's there) of gluten-free items as well, including the pasta and some Amy's stuff. BTW, the Namaste stuff... My husband actually thought the pancake mix was "pretty good"! That's high praise from the Bisquick fan with the super aware tastebuds! :-)
  12. I just found sweet rice flour at Trader Joe's (in Washington) for $1.69 for a 24oz bag!
  13. No, GI symptoms (in particular) are not well correlated with intestinal damage. But don't worry too much, you can only do what you can now do. Stay gluten-free, and eat healthy, and have your doctor check your vitamin and mineral levels. (That's the primary problem with untreated celiac and pregnancy, you don't absorb the needed nutrients. So check them...
  14. In theory, topical steroids can be used on DH rashes, but on the lips, probably not. Have you tried taking her to a dermatologist who knows how to treat DH?
  15. If the hormones are for the endo, can you try using topical hormones? They may have to be compounded if you need progesterone as well, but estrogen already comes in an insertable cream that's often used by menopausal women. If it's for birth control reasons, I've switched to a combination of FAM (fertility awareness method) and barrier methods (no spermicide...
  16. I second Katie's advice - no more testing is needed, just the gluten-free diet!
  17. Ginger Pumpkin Cookies 2 cups sweet rice flour 1/2 cup montina flour 1/2 cup tapioca flour 1 tsp cream of tartar 2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp ginger 2 tsp cinnamon 1/3 cup canola oil 1 small can pureed pumpkin 1 cup agave Combine wet ingredients together. Combine dry ingredients together. Mix wet and dry ingredients until just combines...
  18. Ah, then it's not that your being obsessive at all! (Sometimes we can be, though. ;-) ) It's that he hasn't accepted your choices. At the end of the day, he doesn't have to understand or believe any of it, as long as he accepts that you're doing it and respects your wishes for yourself. It may help to tell him that, so that he doesn't think you are placing...
  19. I'm NOT defending the unsupportive (in this sense) spouses out there, but I think it's important to realize that obsessing about *any* medical condition can be bad for us as well and can drive anyone away. These people, in particular, are going to hear about it the most, if we obsess about it, because they are around us the most. If it would help any of...
  20. I'd be interested, if I wasn't all the way across the country, and busy as a bee in November! But that's a GREAT! idea, and I hope it goes well!
  21. Based on celiac alone, if you are not IgA deficient, are following the diet, and have no complicating factors, you shouldn't be *actually* immunosuppressed. Other than that, it's a tough call. For instance, I have asthma, so I'm supposed to be in the "frail, old people" group that gets the shots first, and I often do. But if I had an anaphylactic egg allergy...
  22. Ironically, for the same reasons that you wouldn't call Asperger's a disease, I wouldn't really call Celiac a disease either. It's not that we're sick, it's that we can't digest something other people can; much the same as it's not that those with Asperger's are sick, but (as I understand) they don't process social interaction the same way other people do...
  23. Besides Vance's, I've seen a couple places sell "powdered soy milk", which may be nothing more that slightly refined and cooked soy flour.
  24. There are cheap ways to do a lot of things. For instance, instead of buying expensive gluten-free bread, you can have PB&J (or just PB) on rice cakes (for me, I might have three rice cakes in the morning ($0.50), and two tablespoons or so of peanut butter ($0.67?) for a cheap breakfast). Or apples. :-) Rice and corn are good, inexpensive sources of...

    ARCHIVED Visit To A Dietitian

If you're feeling fairly savvy navigating your way around labels, then I'd focus most on how to best get a healthy diet for your body. For me, I'd be asking about easy ways to get enough protein; for you, it sounds like asking about getting enough fiber is important. You might also ask about more obscure items that you may not yet have heard about. Do...
