  1. Hmmm.... I did a lot of flax crackers for a while, because I love those. Fruit when it's in season (homemade dried fruits are much better, for the ones that dry well). I've done a few veggies, but never found a method I'm super happy with. Some "cookie" type things too. When I was backpacking, I would make my meals and dehydrate them to bring with me...
  2. Honestly, we pack all our food. Cheaper and healthier, if a lot more time consuming. Ah, tradeoffs.
  3. /like Seriously, all of this. (Except the "I am also a pediatrician" part. )
  4. I do use a dehydrator. You're right - it takes a long time to dehydrate food. It's kind of a pain in the butt because it's big. but it's very effective.
  5. Honestly, every time that my toddler and I are out with friends, and she (not gluten intolerant) shares their gluteny snacks, I get sick. So, I would totally encourage a gluten free home and let the kiddos eat gluten free too. It won't hurt them, and it makes it just that much easier not to feed them prepackaged, processed crap.
  6. Don't worry too much. It was an accident, and the chances that one episode caused harm are very small. But, I will be honest, my pregnancy is the one time I have been insanely careful - only eating food I make in my own house or things I have long, long known to be safe. It just wasn't worth taking the risk for me. (And I ate sushi during my pregnancy...
  7. When I travel, I buy food in the grocery store and cook my own. Ok, with nothing but a fridge and microwave, "cook" can be generous, but it works.
  8. I would highly encourage you to call around to local GI docs and ask if anyone will work on a sliding scale or set up payment plans.
  9. I was the opposite - I had been gluten (and dairy) free for years before dealing with fibromyalgia. Based on what's happened leading up to it and through it and since then, though, I strongly suspect that it was - amongst other things that simply made me prone to it - an incredibly stressful job that lead to the problem.
  10. I totally believe you, and even imagined it that way. You've known her for quite a while, so I'm certain that you read it right. But all the other people reading your response may or may not take it the same way. I keep trying to figure out what I would have put in place of what you wrote... probably something about how much everyone loves my gluten...
  11. So what is necessary and sufficient evidence for her to try a gluten free diet? The implication, karen, of your reply is that, unless she is diagnosed as celiac, she shouldn't be trying gluten free, because it belittles the diet for other people who truly need it. I know that is not what you really mean, of course, but that's what it sounds like. I...
  12. Honestly, I'd go in and talk to the teacher. Fear of lawsuits is a bigger problem in this world than actual ones, but that fear makes people do stupid things, so I can't encourage you to add to that. But go tell the teacher - "she was throwing up for three hours after this class. I specifically left instructions about this topic, and for you to disregard...
  13. What are your doctors saying about this? Besides gluten, I would talk to your doc about thyroid issues. Post partum thyroid changes are not uncommon, and they can swing, back and forth, for a while unless you get them treated. As for diet - I don't see much in the way of veggies, but a fair amount of carbs. You might need to reduce carbs, increase...
  14. A couple of thoughts: 1) Assuming you're not sitting on your butt the other 22 hours of the day, that is likely too much intense exercise. Your body needs more rest days - or at least days where you SIGNIFICANTLY vary what you are doing with it. 2) Are you getting enough sleep? Sufficient sleep is vital for proper metabolism. 3) Are you eating late at...
  15. You ask for something different? What do you normally eat? You ask for something good? What kinds of things do you generally like? When I was pregnant, my favorite foods were avocados, sushi, and (twice - ONLY twice) BLT's.
  16. The organic broth has had wheat in it for years. Every time I've checked a label it's been there.
  17. The smell of baked goods come from aromatic compounds that can make it into the air. Gluten is a heavy protein that cannot do this - and cannot trigger a smell sensation through the nose. So, the smells are not going to gluten you. I'm not saying that airborne flour can't gluten you - I believe it can. But smell and airborne flour are two very different...
  18. Don't forget that earl grey is (almost universally) a caffeinated tea. Caffeine can cause diahhrea.
  19. Were you trying flavored mixes, or pure protein powder? I rarely like the "protein shake" mixes - well, never, really. Single ingredients. Can you share which ones you didn't like, so people don't make repeat suggetsions? (I mean brands and types.)
  20. It depends on what you like. A good rice protein powder will just taste a bit creamy, though you have to give it a little time to sit. You can get hemp protein from a number of places, and you can also find pea protein powder and pumpkin seed protein powder (my current favorite, I don't notice any taste in my smoothies).
  21. I made marinara with canned tomatoes and spices. But no, I do not look for gluten-free on the label. I simply read the ingredient list very carefully.
  22. It is NOT uncommon for toddlers to not sleep through the night. Something like 40% of 2-yr olds still wake in the night, and that number doesn't drop to the very low numbers until more like 5. Of course it varies by child, and some of them wake up themselves but may not wake up their parent. You're not alone. I know many others in your shoes, and I...
  23. I did, once, years ago, find a package that looked like ground beef. I think it was labeled "ground beef for hamburgers" or "ground beef for meatloaf". It had an ingredient list that included breadcrumbs. So, I will say that it pays to actually read the package. But the package MUST state if it has wheat in it, and the "title" of the package will give...
  24. I always did leftovers, and my husband does too. Stir-fry of many varieties, pasta salad, soups (chicken rice and lentil are popular around here and are very filling the way we make them), chili. We do absolutely zero extra work to make lunch. We just put up leftovers after dinner, and pull out a container to put in a lunch bag the next morning.
  25. Three thoughts: 1) go back to the GI and ask him to formalize the diagnosis and provide you with paperwork to give the school 2) private schooling 3) home schooling (depending on what state you're in)
