ARCHIVED I'm Not Convinced By My Test Results.
tarnalberry replied to Brittanyadell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you went gluten free in July, and got tested September (four months ago), that means you were gluten free prior to testing, so the tests can't give you a reliable answer to whether or not you have celiac. You have to be consuming gluten at the time of (and for a few weeks or months prior to) testing in order to be accurate. -
ARCHIVED Co-Worker Cluelessness
tarnalberry replied to MJ-S's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
And, honestly, they may be at a loss for what to get you. I had a friend who made us cookies - she knew I couldn't eat them, and that my husband wouldn't because he doesn't like chocolate. But she was super excited about getting to bake again for the first time in a while, and wanted to share that joy. And, honestly, I'm HAPPY that she shared that with... -
ARCHIVED Can It Really Make You Feel This Badly?
tarnalberry replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, it can. But you could also have the flu, or one of many other things going around. Or even both. There's almost no sure-fire way to know. And, as everyone else said, if you're not certain about things glutening you, going whole foods (nothing with an ingredient list, which chex, rice milk, premade mixes, packaged lunch meat, and coffee creamer... -
ARCHIVED Underweight Need Help Please
tarnalberry replied to andreikirev's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Every whole food in the produce section is your friend! Enjoy the potatoes, but also sweet potatoes, and (this time of year!) butternut squash and onions and beets and chard and kale and lettuce and carrots and broccoli and cauliflower and celery - and all the other fun stuff that is out of season and shipped from somewhere. And the apples and pears and...- 5 replies

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet Or Gluten Free Lifestyle?
tarnalberry replied to captaincrab55's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As the primary definition (not colloquial use) of diet is "food habitually consumed", I say diet. The same way, when I talk about my dog's (or, in the past, my bird's) diet, I'm not referring to a weight loss approach. Same way, when I tell my toddler, "a cow's diet consists primarily of hay" and I'm not referring to putting a cow on a diet. 'Cause I like... -
ARCHIVED Daughter Recently Diagnosed, Questioning Diagnosis
tarnalberry replied to Jemms1028's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Is she still playing with playdoh? Is she in daycare, in a playgroup, with a nanny, or watched with other kids who eat gluten foods? Did you remove all gluten from your house or find another way for her to not get ahold of any gluten foods that anyone else in your house eats? Did you remove all sources of contamination from her foods (no shared toasters... -

I ended up making ice cream the last time I had that happen (angel food cake). -
ARCHIVED Help Me Figure Out A Christmas Dessert!
tarnalberry replied to Kelleybean's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Apple pie. Or, really, as my husband prefers, apple pie filling, maybe with a crumb top. Pretty much exactly how you'd make an apple pie, but without the crust. Because the inside is my husband's favorite part anyway. We also like doing berry cobblers, though more in September when we can pick fresh berries. -
ARCHIVED Am I Unreasonable?
tarnalberry replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Super Sensitive People
It's your choice. A pain, maybe, but your choice. I do think, however, that means you have to figure out how to pack/travel so that you can have enough food, even if they choose to eat out too. For starters, I would suggest a roof rack! -
ARCHIVED Sick Of Restaurants!
tarnalberry replied to Juliebove's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I am not saying that her family shouldn't attempt to accommodate her choices. If you respect a person you should, logically, respect their choices ( unless they are causing true harm), and should respect their right to make those choices. So, I think the family, in this case, is just being mean and disrespectful and selfish by not offering a compromise. -
Actually, in mostt cases, the law says no outside food for food safety reasons.

ARCHIVED S.a.d Lights And Vitamin D
tarnalberry replied to Celiac Mindwarp's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
FYI, if you're far enough north (above california, I think, but I forget exactly where), there is not enough UV light getting through the atmosphere (due to how low in the sky the sun is) to generate vit D in your skin regardless of how long you are outside. I made my own SAD light in a spare room we used to have. That, full spectrum bulbs, and being outside... -
ARCHIVED Sick Of Restaurants!
tarnalberry replied to Juliebove's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm one of those who, even after 10 years of being strictly gluten free, considers it a choice. You CAN eat gluten if you want. Just like you can smoke if you want. Just like you can go out and binge drink when you're in college. Just like you can fail to stand up for yourself around friends and family. There are lots of stupid choices we are able to... -
ARCHIVED Allergy To Gluten Vs Intolerance? Histamine Reaction
tarnalberry replied to Ashlynn6's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would also second a scratch test. I would NOT agree that they are only uncomfortable when you have a reaction. (I've had two full scratch test/subdermal tests run - one as a child, one as an adult. I dislike them. It's not awful, but it's not pleasant. Well worth it, though, and not a big deal. Annoying, mostly, I'd say.) But it has a good shot at... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Ever Diagnosed With Somatization Disorder?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Doctors
So, here's the thing... Stress CAN cause these symptoms, and fibromyalgia isn't just a myth. A psychologist I saw for a long time suggested somatization for me - and she's right. It's fairly clear; during times of particularly high stress during a few years, the tendonitis in my wrists would get significantly worse. And there is perfectly reasonable... -

ARCHIVED Can We Trust Any Risotto In Restaurants?
tarnalberry replied to Firuze's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have heard, however, of an "epic debate" amongst the different culinary backgrounds in Italy when it comes to risotto - some say butter, some say bone marrow! I've always used butter or oil, because I'm lazy.- 15 replies

ARCHIVED Cross Contamination? ?
tarnalberry replied to VeggieGal's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are no universal answers to these questions. Yes, at some point, a high enough level of cross contamination WILL cause damage, to just about any celiac. But studies suggest that levels of 20ppm is the threshold for causing damage to most celiacs. But that's a really, really small amount, so, in effect, it's important to check for cross contamination... -
ARCHIVED Can We Trust Any Risotto In Restaurants?
tarnalberry replied to Firuze's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have yet to see any risotto recipe that used flour, or called for something that was likely to contain wheat. But that's not to say that you couldn't use a wheat containing ingredient (say, the Organic Swanson's Chicken Broth when the recipe calls for stock). Nor is it to say that there couldn't be a cross contamination issue in a shared facility, like...- 15 replies

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Meal Ideas
tarnalberry replied to Lincoln's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
we do a lot of stir-fry around here. serve it over rice or just add lots of veggies. certainly doesn't have to be fatty, or even very meaty if you don't want it to be. (you don't have to use soy sauce for a stir fry!) pasta (gluten free) with either a tomato-based sauce, or as a salmon, chicken or veggie pasta salad is good too. vegetable stew is good... -
ARCHIVED Leftover Turkey Suggestions
tarnalberry replied to Marilyn R's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Awesome! Yeah, it was a long time ago, so I don't remember the details. Some of the leftovers sushi was really quite good (turkey and avocado, iirc), but some of it was just... well, not "bad", but not anything you'd want to bother with making again. -

ARCHIVED 14 Month Old With Concerning Symptoms
tarnalberry replied to Eschul88's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have a few positive tests described right there in your story. He does better off it, then bad on it. Then better again off, then bad on. That is *four* positive tests right there. If he does better off gluten, and you can't get proper testing at this time, why keep him on it?
