ARCHIVED Another 5 Star Meal For Me Tonight
tarnalberry replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
While I understand you're frustration, it's of your own doing. I have three suggestions: 1) Do better homework. Never count on any one particular restaurant being your win - plan for and know about backup options. Be prepared to go to plan B at any time. And make the home work BETTER. My first google hit on "Asheville, NC gluten free" turned up... -
ARCHIVED What Is The Best Evaporated Milk Substitute?
tarnalberry replied to KahleFamily's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I boil down almond milk (could totally use soy, but I try to not have too much soy) until it's thicker. Takes a little while, but you can do it way ahead of time. Works fabulously! -
ARCHIVED Are These The Blood Test Results For Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to Bigtime's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No, it looks like they were testing you for a strain of yeast that is common in Chron's Disease (Open Original Shared Link), and for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (which is different from Irritable Bowel Disease). They did not - by those tests anyway - test you for Celiac Disease. -
ARCHIVED How To Trial Gluten
tarnalberry replied to merryblonde's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
True. I was assume thing the original poster meant that corn is the problem and it's time to try gluten again to see if t *won't* cause a problem. But clarifying would be good! -
ARCHIVED Sex Drive After Going Gluten Free
tarnalberry replied to soulcurrent's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For me, my low sex drive was linked to low testosterone levels and dysthymia. It was difficult to get tested for testosterone levels when I was 23, but my gyn specialist for vulvar vestibulitis (the other, major!, cause for my low sex drive) was happy to test for it when I asked him. Not trying to say this is the case for you, just putting in one of... -
ARCHIVED Glutened By Caramel Colour In Coke?
tarnalberry replied to kristionii's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
any chance you're using the same colander to strain the rice pasta that you used to use for wheat pasta? that would definitely be a risk factor. -
ARCHIVED Worried About Testing
tarnalberry replied to wandawanda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You need to be eating at least three slices of bread a day (or the equivalent) for three months in order to have a reasonable chance at an accurate diagnosis. Since the blood test is checking for a REACTION TO WHEAT, if you have no wheat in your diet to react to, it can't be diagnosed. That said, dietary response IS a test. You do have a VERY STRONG... -
ARCHIVED How To Trial Gluten
tarnalberry replied to merryblonde's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
eat whole wheat pasta, or make bulgar (can make it into tabbouleh) or couscous. they are all concentrated sources of wheat that do not include other ingredients (aside from ones you add). I would have two or three servings of a wheat based food every day for at least a week, and see what happens. once that week is up, go gluten free again, for at least... -
ARCHIVED Fibromyalgia - Savella
tarnalberry replied to GottaSki's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have fibromyalgia, and it developed AFTER I went gluten and dairy free. For a while, I was on Cymbalta and Mirapex, after a consult with a pain-management psychologist determined that I had concommittant mild to moderate depression (no, almost no one who knows me would ever think that I had/have depression) and a sleep study suggested that I could have... -
ARCHIVED I'm Tired All The Time
tarnalberry replied to jenngolightly's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just because you are sleeping doesn't mean that you're getting rest. Do you feel rested when you wake up? Do you feel like you have energy for a while, and then it peters out? When does it peter out? Do naps help? Are you on medications that can affect sleep? Do you know if you sleep soundly? Have you ever had a sleep study? Do you know if you snore... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Thanksgiving
tarnalberry replied to KahleFamily's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Turkeys are easy to cook - some spices, wrap in foil (to keep moist and juicy), use a temperature probe (sensor goes in the turkey as you cook, connects to a reader outside the oven, and beeps when it hits the temperature you set - never over cook a turkey again!), and in the oven it goes. Yes, you'll want to check time tables (and the foil causes the turkey... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet And Hypoglycemia?
tarnalberry replied to homemaker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
yeah, some gluten free substitutes are much higher in simple carbs and sugar. refined rice isn't going to have as much protein or fiber as whole wheat. not to mention behavioral effects, where you may eat *more* refined gluten-free grain products because of the "OMG! Gluten Free Cheerios! OMG! Gluten Free Muffins! OMG! Gluten Free Chocolate Cookies... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant Dh Thinking Of Going Back To Gluten
tarnalberry replied to halfrunner's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yup - that's the rest of saying "here are the consequences to you not being responsible" - he may say "fine, I'll take those consequences". Though, I'd have to ask, who on earth thinks that bread is worth 10 years of lifespan and who knows how many decades of poor quality of life? (I would NOT bet that he thinks that, but rather that it's REALLY HARD for... -
ARCHIVED Starting To Worry About Having Kids Now
tarnalberry replied to soulcurrent's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm 13 weeks pregnant, and still find the idea that my husband and I are responsible adults capable of raising a child INCREDIBLY FREAKY! Wait as long as makes sense for you, but I wouldn't let celiac stop you. Sure, some kids will have additional intolerances, some won't. You do your best, and you'll find that your best is only good enough, but good... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant Dh Thinking Of Going Back To Gluten
tarnalberry replied to halfrunner's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'll be honest, if my husband had good reason to believe he was gluten intolerant (or especially if he were celiac) and he decided to keep eating gluten, I would sit him down and say "Your life is tied to mine. I love each other very much, and I'll be dam**d if I'm going to sit back and watch you harm yourself. I sure as he** won't take care of you when... -
ARCHIVED Ugh! I Feel Like Crap!
tarnalberry replied to iamhalfsickofshadows's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
given the symptoms you list, honestly, I would not put celiac disease on the top of the list of likely issues. is it possible? oh definitely. the list you give: strikes me as primarily a central nervous system issue. yes, I'm saying that you are stressed out, and not managing the stress well, and that's causing the problems, but I don't mean that... -
ARCHIVED Getting Officially Tested, Trial For Treatment As Well?
tarnalberry replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
An experimental trial will not take you if you have not had a biopsy proven diagnosis. That's just standard practice for any celiac trial I've ever seen. Additionally, while I am in favor of medical research, it's worth knowing that the zonulin-modifying drug that's being tested will NOT stop the autoimmune reaction - it occurs in the gut, not the bloodstream... -
ARCHIVED Day 1 Of The Kitty And The Air Mattress Has Been A Success
tarnalberry replied to The Fluffy Assassin's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm not super hard to please with beds, but picky, and we have a memory foam mattress. (Not a topper, the thing is foam all the way through.) We didn't get a box spring for underneath, so it sits low and is a very comfortable, but non-moving, space of cush. I can comfortably sleep on my side, or on my back, and not feel like things are out of place. ... -
It is entirely possible, though it's hard to rule out that it's not just your own system. I had recurrent yeast infections, but it was due to antibiotic use, not my husband. (We used condoms for birth control.) I think it triggered my vulvar vestibulitis, which can feel like a yeast infection, but isn't.

ARCHIVED It's Just A Marketing Fad, Just Like Atkins!?
tarnalberry replied to wantsomedammpizza's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
"Yeah, it's a fad diet, like diabetes. And like peanut allergies. Totally a fad, with no basis in medical science. What can I say, I like pointless fads that have no link to reality. Makes life more interesting, especially with conversations like this." Well, perhaps I'm a bit snarky... -
ARCHIVED How Careful Do I Need To Be?
tarnalberry replied to SecondTwin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Approximately 10% of celiacs cannot tolerate even gluten free oats. You might see if taking them back out of your diet helps. -
ARCHIVED How Careful Do I Need To Be?
tarnalberry replied to SecondTwin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
the "processed in a shared facility" question is tricky. if you have a shared kitchen - even if your friend brings a granola bar into the house - you have a shared facility right there. it is certainly possible to avoid cross contamination in shared facilities, and it is also certainly possible to have consistent problems with cross contamination. you... -
ARCHIVED Talk Me Out Of A Cheat Birthday Patty Melt Please
tarnalberry replied to jensey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
given that cheating, as "rarely" as once a month, has the same health risks as not even doing the gluten free diet, and given that it is inevitable that our lives will have *some* cross contamination pop up, I would never cheat. and no, I do not have hugely pronounced symptoms, and am only diagnosed on symptoms, not a biopsy. I figure that the pain au... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Your Baby Move?
tarnalberry replied to jordanandnadia's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My understanding is that first kids, it's highly unlikely that you'd feel it that early. Between celiac and a long yoga practice, I feel rather strongly in tune with the sensations of my body. While I've felt some interesting things, I don't think that it's possible yet to be sure whether it's stretching of the uterus (which I certainly have felt earlier... -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Muffins
tarnalberry replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here's my pumpkin bread recipe that works for muffins: https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.ph...ost&p=44466 You don't have to use all those flours - you can just use a couple (though I wouldn't make soy a main flour). It'll change the taste, but everyone's taste varies significantly.
