  1. Your husband is right. Save yourself the agony and the expense, and keep doing what you're doing. It's obviously working, you're feeling much better, no need for further testing. Tell your doctor you're happy just staying on the gluten-free diet, and you have no intention whatsoever of making yourself purposely ill again. It's often the hardest thing to...
  2. It would be sad enough if your story was unusual, but unfortunately it is not. Many people have gone through the same sort of thing, often with their kids almost dying before doctors would agree that they may have celiac disease. It's absolutely crazy. Most doctors don't understand that to have 'only' an intolerance to gluten, rather than celiac disease...
  3. You know, Toni, most people with fibro have IBS as well. As we all know, IBS is what doctors call it when they haven't got a clue what's wrong. Irritable bowel symptoms are caused by something. I was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2000. I was on 50 mg codeine contin (sometimes 100 mg, I was allowed to up the dosage when needed, which it often was...
  4. Why not make your whole house gluten-free for a while, and see how your girls are doing? That way none of them will feel singled out. Also, you will see at the same time if the other two have problems resolved, too, that could be celiac disease related. Plus, if some of your kids have celiac disease, they got it from somewhere. Since it's genetic,...
  5. I'm 5'6". My kids are all taller than me (even my 'baby', Susie, who was 5'9"already when she was 13). Two girls are just a tiny bit taller than me, one is 5'8", and my son is 6 feet tall. My six brothers are over six feet, and my dad was, too. My mother was quite a bit shorter, and my sister is a little shorter than me.
  6. Oh, you're right! I don't believe we're allowed to have more than two dogs in this town. And I don't know anybody who does, either. It would be a good idea to check on that.
  7. Okay, as a mother of five and grandmother to six, I can tell you this: Your son isn't unusual in the least, gluten or not. While the gluten COULD be a problem, there are plenty of little boys his age who aren't trained at all, not even for peeing. My son completely refused to be trained until two weeks before he was three. And then suddenly he decided he...
  8. I think it is possible that almonds are simply too hard to digest for somebody who's digestive system is in poor shape. So, just eliminate almonds for now, and try them again in a few months, after your villi have had time to heal. You might find that you don't really have a problem with them, that it's only temporary.
  9. What are GLBTQ people?
  10. Hi Mara, and welcome to this board. If your doctor thinks that eating red meat three times a week will bring your iron levels back up to normal, she is wrong. It will take a lot more than that. First off, your gut can't absorb iron right now, and you may need iron injections to bring the iron up to where you can function. Also, you need to get that...
  11. Shouting matches? Are you sure you're reading current threads and not ones from about a week ago, that aren't really happening any more? I thought we had resolved all those controversies, and that these past days we had been back on track with just supporting and helping each other. Am I missing something? You know, from time to time people come in here...
  12. Lynne, I am so sorry about all your troubles. Especially that neighbour seems to add a horrendous amount of stress you don't need. I agree with taking all those pictures and reporting this lady. Also, don't forget her way of diverting the rain to your yard, I don't believe that's legal, either. She probably is mentally ill. She needs help, and alerting the...
  13. Meera, Carla is right, if you have a gluten sensitivity, it will NOT go away. Sure, your intestines will heal, but that doesn't mean you should eat gluten again, only to damage your intestines again. Eventually, you'll end up with autoimmune diseases, severe malnutrition and even cancer. You need to eliminate gluten for life.
  14. That's right. You absolutely CANNOT help eating some of your lipstick, it's inevitable. You will undoubtedly get glutened by lipstick with gluten in it, and it won't be possible to really get better, unless you replace your gluteny lipsticks with gluten-free ones. You need to go all the way with this gluten-free lifestyle. It's either all or nothing. Having...
  15. Kathy Ann, you go by families. If you have doubts about ALL beans, what you need to do is eliminate them all for a month, and then try them one at a time, two weeks apart. That way you don't miss delayed reactions. It is possible that some would be worse than others. An elimination diet is the way to figure it out. I tried the fava bean flour a little...
  16. Adelle, I personally don't see any good reason for a biopsy. Your bloodwork was positive, you're having a fantastic response to the diet, what other evidence would you need? Besides the fact that in order to have a positive biopsy you'd have to go back to eating a lot of gluten for at least six months, making yourself very ill in the process. Besides...
  17. Kathy Ann, I found that I am very intolerant to all lectins (especially rice, soy, dairy and eggs give me the same symptoms as gluten, beans don't seem to be as bad), as well as foods high in salicylates and all nightshade foods. I used to get a lot of neurological symptoms as well, until last summer my gastro symptoms were annoying, but not so bad that I...
  18. It sure sounds like celiac disease is a possibility. And as Carla and Angie said, no need to wait for the Enterolab kit to arrive, you can try going gluten-free right now. If you feel better on the diet, you would pretty much have your answer. It would be so nice if you would start feeling better soon! And even if celiac disease isn't your problem, a...
  19. Yes, I was also getting sick a lot. And your doctors were being stupid. I find that swollen lymph nodes can be excrutiatingly painful! I am so glad mine aren't like that anymore. And I hope that yours get better soon as well.
  20. Yes, it certainly can. Hang in there, I am sure it will get better soon.
  21. I want to let people who use hand-sanitizers know, that they will NOT get rid of gluten. They will kill germs, but you can't kill gluten, since it isn't alive. You have to wash it off your hands. The wipes are fine, since they're moist and you wipe the gluten off your hands. With hand sanitizers, you just rub it around, but it's still there anyway.
  22. Depending on where you are, it can take a while. With my daughter's blood test it took four weeks. I'm in Canada, where those things take forever.
  23. I forgot that not all lard is non-hydrogenated. Of course, I meant to say to use non-hydrogenated lard (which is obviously what I am cooking with).
  24. Britni, since celiac disease is genetic (no doubt about that), chances are that others in your family have it, too. In fact, at least one of your parents at least has the gene, because you got it from somewhere. All first and second degree relatives of celiacs are usually advised to get tested, even if they don't have obvious symptoms.
  25. Gluten will definitely give me a terrible backache (as will other lectins as well). My back was terrible and getting worse before I went gluten-free. The day after starting the gluten-free diet, my backaches were almost gone! Just two days before that, I could hardly move, I was in agony. One sign I've been glutened is always a backache.
