ARCHIVED What Do People Eat If You Are Nightshade Intolerant As Well As Gluten Intolerant?
Ursa Major replied to lynne1978's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Other names for rutabaga are Swede, or yellow turnip. -
ARCHIVED Just Had My Upper Endoscopy
Ursa Major replied to monkeypuss's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, and welcome to these boards. Obviously you have an issue with gluten. It would have been a good idea to have your rash biopsied by a dermatologist, because if that skin biopsy would come back positive, you would have an automatic firm diagnosis of celiac disease. Not all people with celiac disease have DH, but the only thing that causes DH is celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED What Do People Eat If You Are Nightshade Intolerant As Well As Gluten Intolerant?
Ursa Major replied to lynne1978's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One meal I love making (when I have the energy) is a sort of stew I make in the slow cooker. My first layer is onion, next cut up rutabaga, the next layer carrots. After that maybe leek, celery, cabbage, or whatever you have around. Don't put cauliflower, it turns to mush. The top layer is usually chicken thighs, covered with more onions and maybe cut-up... -

ARCHIVED Feeling Great: So How Do I Continue To Stay gluten-free?
Ursa Major replied to Molecular Dude's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dude, just remember that you will likely die a horrible death if you go back to eating gluten. Cancer somewhere of the gastrointestinal tract is almost guaranteed for people with celiac disease who keep eating gluten. You would likely cut at least 20 years off your lifespan. Personally, I'd prefer to be healthy and just keel over or die in my sleep without... -
ARCHIVED Would It Be Worth Trying A gluten-free Diet?
Ursa Major replied to wilem008's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Anemia is one of the most common symptoms of celiac disease. And yes, of course anemia causes fatigue. It is your choice if you actually want to wait for three months to have a biopsy (and get more anemic during that time), or try a gluten-free diet. If you feel better on the gluten-free diet, you will really have your answer, despite a negative blood... -
ARCHIVED Diet Experiment
Ursa Major replied to em-nyc-1234's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If I would eat a bagel today, I would have horrible diarrhea, bloating and feeling 'out of it' the day after tomorrow. The D would likely go away after a day, but the other symptoms would linger for a while. I used to react immediately, but by now I get a delayed reaction. Everybody is different, and reacts differently. You appear to get a delayed reaction... -
Your doctor obviously doesn't know what he is talking about. If he won't order the gene test, you can get it done through other labs, including Enterolab. I believe that just the gene test is around $130.00.

ARCHIVED Fosamax (an Osteoporosis Drug) Causes Heart Disease
Ursa Major posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I know that people diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia will often be prescribed Fosamax by their doctors. I've said previously that it is a bad idea, because all this drug does is, to prevent old bone to die, rather than allowing the bones to be renewed. You end up with denser, older, more brittle bones. Here is an article that shows that Fosamax... -
ARCHIVED Does Gluten Go Through Breastmilk?
Ursa Major replied to SandiB's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Sandi, and welcome to these boards. You have an uninformed pediatrician, and you are right. Yes, gluten absolutely WILL go through breast milk, as do other allergens. That a small, breastfed baby is anemic should be a huge red flag right there! Plus the rash, horrid stools and everything else. You are doing the right thing in giving up gluten for... -
One good explanation is, that the med schools are in the pockets of the big pharmaceutical companies. And the pharmaceutical companies want you to use IBS medications, rather than changing your diet, which won't make them any money. So, they make sure doctors are only taught how to treat symptoms, rather than finding the cause of the 'IBS'. Big pharma...

It is Nux Vomica, also called Colubrina (sometimes it is called the one, sometimes by the other name but it is the same thing).

ARCHIVED This So Totally Pissed Me Off!
Ursa Major replied to loco-ladi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know it says What I read in that is, that some of the ingredients or processing methods might be questionable. Because if you put NO ingredients in that could possibly contain gluten, and you make the product in a dedicated gluten-free facility, without risk of cc, then you can claim it is gluten-free. And actually mean it. If you use ingredients... -
ARCHIVED My Tiny Granddaughter Zoey Could Use Your Prayers
Ursa Major replied to Ursa Major's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I called today, and talked to Zoey's dad. She had a good night, woke up only once at 3:00 AM, and my daughter went and slept with her on the futon for the rest of the night. She didn't need painkillers. Today she's been watching movies, colouring and having books read to her. I talked to her, and she told me that she watched Dora today. I asked her if... -
Lynne, your doctor is an arrogant, know-it-all idiot. Your son sure sounds like he has celiac disease to me! Insist that he be tested, and if your doctor won't do it, switch doctors. But regardless of the test results, your son needs to be on a gluten-free diet, probably no dairy, either (or soy). He sounds like he is already sicker than you realize.

ARCHIVED This So Totally Pissed Me Off!
Ursa Major replied to loco-ladi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is where I prefer the German labeling system. If it says, "Suitable for those on a gluten-free diet", it means that it might contain traces of gluten, or has wheat starch in it (and it will always clearly label ALL ingredients). If it says "Gluten Free", that means that there is zero gluten in it. I do NOT like it when it says 'Gluten Free' on the... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy Reports Confuse Me
Ursa Major replied to kayavara's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Really, who is the ignorant person who read this report and claimed there is no evidence of celiac disease? That is utterly ridiculous. You have chronic inflammation of both your small bowel and stomach. You have villous blunting and atrophy. You have damage in your esophagus that suggests reflux. And then you try the diet and feel so much better. ... -
Thank you for the prayers, she can use all the prayers she can get.

ARCHIVED Traveling With Celiac Tots
Ursa Major replied to AMQmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Don't go overboard with things like masks or gloves, you will raise them to be paranoid if you do that. But take along travel wipes and wipe down the surfaces in the car, and the armrests in the plane, things like that. But don't make a big deal out of it, either. -
ARCHIVED Just Looking For Someone To Listen
Ursa Major replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There is lots you can do together. Go to the theatre, or just for a walk in the park. Or go to the zoo. Or a concert, go camping, or rent a boat/canoe on a river/lake and just enjoy a day on the water. Go fishing together (if you like that sort of thing), or bird watching, go to a museum or an art gallery........ The possibilities are endless. Even join... -
ARCHIVED Barlean's Greens Say Gluten Free, But Have Wheat Leaf
Ursa Major replied to monkey123's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. -
My oldest grandson (who is almost six years old now) was like your son. He would eat and eat and eat, and would cry when my daughter told him he wouldn't get any more. He also was so skinny that every rib showed. He was light as a feather, while still being a normal height. Bad breath, stinky farts and insatiable appetite are TYPICAL celiac disease symptoms...

ARCHIVED My Tiny Granddaughter Zoey Could Use Your Prayers
Ursa Major replied to Ursa Major's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Oh yes, that is exactly what I am planning on doing. This week I'll be sending the movies. Next week a sticker book and stickers (she LOVES stickers), the week after a new book......... you get the idea. Plus, Zoey loves talking to me on the phone. When she isn't actually talking to me for real, she'll often pretend to talk to me on her toy phone, my daughter... -
When I get cramping or severe stomach pain, I use a homeopathic remedy called 'Sepia'. I use the 30c strength, and take four of the little granules when I get pain. I repeat every few hours if needed until the pain is gone. I find that is the only thing that seems to help for me. Pain killers are hard on the stomach and can make the inflammation worse...
