  1. After being gluten-free for 2 1/2 years, I have a very delayed reaction from gluten. The D and stomach cramps don't usually hit me for 24 to 48 hours after being exposed to gluten. So, your reaction might still come. Some get reactions nearly a week after the fact. If you haven't had a reaction within a week, you can be sure you didn't react. Also, some...
  2. Since boys have a much longer growth phase than girls, it is quite likely that he will still grow. Also, some boys, celiac disease or not, won't really have their final growth spurt until the age of 16 or older. My son looked like a 12 year old until he was 15 (with a soprano voice to match) and was getting desperate. When he was 16 he had an amazing growth...
  3. I don't think it is possible to go from an iron level of 1 to 12 within two weeks of taking an iron supplement. One of those results must have been an inaccurate reading. What are the normal ranges for iron for your lab? Because here in Canada the so-called normal range is from 40 to 300 (with 105 being optimal). So, measured by that scale, 12 is still...
  4. If it is for myself I wouldn't worry about it, but I feel it isn't fair to make the decision to disregard that warning on behalf of others. It might be best if you get a different brand of cake mix.
  5. My oldest granddaughter had dark circles under her eyes all her life until the age of seven (she is almost eight now), at which point my daughter put her on the gluten-free diet. Her dark circles have been gone ever since (they took less than a week to disappear).
  6. Hi Jenni, and welcome to these boards. It is highly unusual for a child's iron to be so low. That and her other symptoms sure fit with celiac disease. I hope her GI knew to take at least five biopsies when doing your daughter's endoscopy. It is usually NOT possible to see celiac disease damage with the naked eye, unless it is so severe that all the villi...
  7. Aleshia, I am afraid that your significant loss in height might be due to osteoporosis. Yes, even CHILDREN with celiac disease have been diagnosed with osteoporosis! I suggest you ask to have a bone density test done, and be tested for vitamin D, calcium and magnesium as well. If your doctor won't believe you, switch doctors, Way too many doctors are...
  8. Angie, it sounds like your baby may have celiac disease as well. But unless she is extremely ill (as in near death) it is highly unlikely that her tests will show anything. At that age diet response is the most reliable test. Seriously, she is starting to show celiac disease symptoms. Do you really want to wait until she is failure to thrive and really...
  9. Well, you know, I don't trust those 'experts' one bit. Personally, I think introducing gluten between 4 and 6 months to prevent celiac disease is purest nonsense, I would never do it. Stef, that could have slowed down your son's weight gain and development, in my opinion. Make sure you don't give him dairy, and don't worry too much. And DON'T give him...
  10. Well, unless you are IgA deficient (which should be tested) you should theoretically not have a problem with gluten right now. Of course, since you have a celiac disease gene, you might develop celiac disease in the future. But really, trying the diet is the most important test. And since you feel much better on the gluten-free diet, you will likely be...
  11. Your son sounds typical for a child with celiac disease. The sooner you get him off gluten, the better. There are nice gluten-free crackers out there, that really shouldn't be a problem. Make sure you eliminate dairy at least for a few months as well, and please don't give him soy instead. Both dairy and soy can hinder healing. Rice milk (not Rice Dream,...
  12. My suggestion is, to cook supper gluten-free for the family. Explain to your teens that you don't have the energy to cook two meals, and if they don't like it they will have to cook their own meal themselves. And be firm about that! Normal suppers don't have to have gluten anyway. Potatoes or rice are naturally gluten-free, as are vegetables and meat...
  13. Your question is neither strange nor stupid. I did the same thing, due to clueless doctors. I decided to eliminate gluten on my own, and my positive response to the gluten-free diet was amazing. I challenged myself with gluten several times, always with the same result. I now get a delayed reaction to gluten, but it is predictable that within 24 to 4...
  14. Your son sounds like my oldest grandson. He was terribly emotional, and would cry for hours, totally inconsolable if you even so much as looked at him the wrong way! Until he was nearly five he also NEVER had a solid bowel movement. It was always at least really mushy. Plus he was always ravenously hungry, but so thin you could count his ribs. Finally...
  15. I was on 50 - 100mg of codeine contin (depending on how bad the pain was) twice a day for five years (it's slow release and lasts for 12 hours) for the terrible fibro pain. I was very ill from May to October of 2005, with unrelenting watery D and awful stomach cramps after trying a bowel cleanse, which apparently was the last straw and put me over the...
  16. Hi Lexi, and welcome to these boards. If you want to be 100% sure of ingredients, you would do best to just use pure maple syrup on your pancakes. It never has gluten and is safe.
  17. There are two possibilities. One, you had such severe damage that for you it takes more than six months to heal enough to test negative. The second possibility is, that you are still getting gluten somewhere, like personal care products, or cross contamination in your house, so you keep having damage.
  18. Mary's crackers are delicious, even my non-celiac family members like them. But I found them to be a little harsh on my intestines when I was in the early stages of recovery. Give them a try to see if you can tolerate them. I am sure your bowels will let you know if they can handle them already!
  19. Since grains are completely unnecessary for a healthy diet (contrary to what grain farmers would like you to believe), I wouldn't worry about developing deficiencies because of not eating grains. If you eat meat, vegetables and fruit, and get enough fat and sunshine, you should be fine, especially if you take a good multi vitamin.
  20. It is possible that the mashed potatoes contained gluten. I just found out while in Mexico that some restaurants will put wheat flour into their mashed potatoes! I haven't got a clue why anybody would want to do that, but maybe because flour is cheaper than potatoes? Or maybe the mashed potatoes will be creamier? It taught me to not take anything for...
  21. Erin, I am in a similar situation. My doctor knows precious little about celiac disease, and as a result I suffered for years with obvious celiac disease symptoms. My doctor thought that you can't have celiac disease if you are overweight, and so she never tested me for it (she knows better now, as I gave her a half hour lecture on celiac disease after figuring...
  22. Beware at Kelsey's! I went there a few months ago, being excited about them now using rice flour as a thickener. I asked about one specific menu item that looked good (don't remember what it was), and they brought me their ingredients list. I found that the sauce had a TON of ingredients that I would normally never want to eat (chemicals), but it also had...
  23. Okay, apparently your daughter is one of the few people who reacts with vomiting to gluten. That makes it much harder to pinpoint the problem! Not everybody gets a fever with the stomach flu, though. One of my grandchildren threw up several times over the course of a day, but didn't have a fever, either. I guess you might just have to let it go, how...
  24. Jesslynn, that you have replaced his milk with soy could be a huge problem! First of all, dairy will NOT supply any calcium, because pasteurization kills the enzyme that will allow humans to use the calcium from dairy. In fact, it has been shown that dairy will actually deplete calcium. The dairy industry has done a great job at brainwashing the general population...
  25. Well, I got back last night. The day after I arrived in Ottawa two weeks ago I got dreadfully ill with the stomach flu. My daughter said that she had never in all her life seen anybody as violently ill with the stomach flu as me. I was throwing up with accompanying severe D all night that night, and was in bed with a fever all day the next day. So, I couldn...
