  1. I was in Mexico (Queretaro) last month. Restaurants are tricky, very few waiters speak English. Some restaurants have separate Spanish and English menus, those are fairly easy. DO NOT eat mashed potatoes in a restaurant in Mexico, they all seem to be putting wheat into those! Not even the restaurant in the international airport in Mexico City had any...
  2. Kara, that sounds like a pretty bad fall, and you might have broken your pelvis even if you didn't have celiac disease. I broke my ankle six years ago by just going over on it when stepping on the edge of a driveway. But I had a bone density scan done two years ago, and my bones are strong and healthy. So, I can't blame my fractured ankle on celiac disease...
  3. Yes, yes, yes, gluten WILL increase your risk of miscarriage! But getting glutened at times won't. I did have five healthy babies while eating gluten, but I also had eight miscarriages. Plus, I had AWFUL pregnancies, I was sick for nine months every time. Kyga, I am glad you have decided not to go through with eating gluten again for a test, as you would...
  4. I'd use less sour cream, and bake them on a metal cookie sheet instead.
  5. Well, it might. But are you willing to thoroughly scrub down your entire kitchen afterwards, have a shower and wash all your clothes to stop yourself from being glutened later? Because the flour dust will settle on everything around you, of course, and on you as well. Personally, I won't allow any gluten flours in my house, period. Most dishes can be made...
  6. I don't know. I've always assumed mashed potatoes are gluten free (after all, who would be so dumb and put wheat in, anyway?). But when we were in Mexico just recently, I got glutened because there the restaurants actually DO put wheat into mashed potatoes! You will need to ask what the ingredients are before you order your mashed potatoes. What I...
  7. I think (at least here in Canada that is the case) that you only need to do that if you actually run a real daycare and have several kids from different families every day. Amanda, I say, 'go for it'! You enjoy the little guy, he is happy with you, and you will get some extra money to safe for your house.
  8. Two years ago I baked a cake for my husband for Valentine's Day out of normal flour. I was VERY careful not to get flour into the air, and washing my hands etc. And obviously, I didn't eat the cake, either. I was sick for three days anyway. Needless to say, after that, I got rid of all wheat flour in my house, NOBODY is allowed to bake with regular flour...
  9. I have never heard of this, but it sounds fishy to me. I am sure if there really was a valid treatment that got rid of celiac disease, we would all know about it. As far as I know, the gluten-free diet is the only valid treatment for celiac disease at this point. I am glad your daughter is doing well.
  10. I used to have severe reflux, and I also have a hiatal hernia. My reflux got much better when eliminating nightshade foods (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) a few years before figuring out that I am gluten intolerant. It practically went away after removing gluten, eggs and rice from my diet as well (I've always known that dairy was a problem...

    ARCHIVED Sad

Roxie, I made a delicious lunch for eight people today, corn tortillas with various fillings, and Black Forest cake for dessert. All gluten-free, of course. Only one other person other than me eats gluten-free (my youngest daughter, the others are still in denial, even though they have symptoms), but they all thought that my cake was to die for! Everybody...
  12. I do understand what you are saying. I know that I will end up with severe stomach and bowel cramps and D either within minutes, hours and sometimes days. I never know when it will come, but it always does. When I remember the last time I sat on the toilet for hours, moaning in pain, that sure stops me when I get tempted! It is so bad I want to die. It...
  13. I think Germans would have a fit if their honey had anything else added to it! If there is barley in honey wherever you are right now, it must be a local thing. I have never heard of that before.

    ARCHIVED Berries

No, I don't think so. I can't tolerate berries either (extremely high in salicylates), but it is an issue not directly connected to celiac disease.
  15. Larry, you are right not to allow any loose gluten flour in your house, ever again. It is just not possible to stop some of it being in the air when baking, to be breathed in or to settle on things. And globs of gluten dough all over are not a good thing, either. It is just asking for trouble for yourself if you allow baking with wheat flour to be done...
  16. That is wonderful Meline! I wished I'd have been that smart thirty years ago when my now-husband was upsetting me continuously before getting married! Because he is still doing it, and making me miserable. I should have done what you did, and kicked him out of my life then. I hope he is the right one for you. I think it is so sweet that he brought your...

    ARCHIVED Help!

Of course, Dapsone is not REALLY a valid treatment, because it only treats symptoms, not the cause. It is helpful to some people to get some relief until the gluten-free diet will control the DH. But the only real treatment is the gluten-free diet.
  18. Hi, and welcome to these boards. Your GI has done things backwards. Normally the blood test is done first, and then the biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. If your villi are blunted, and you have the symptoms, you have celiac disease. Especially since you've had a great response to the diet, there is no doubt at all about the diagnosis. If I was you, I'd...
  19. That's right, you'll have to deal with feeling bad yourself from being glutened, try not to stress out over it. Being all upset will be more harmful to the baby than a one-time glutening. It is highly unlikely that it will do any harm to the baby. If you get D, make sure you stay hydrated, lie down if you feel bad and take it easy.
  20. I've done the same thing, didn't get sick and doubted. But boy, two days later the D hit with a vengeance, and lasted for days, along with feeling out of sorts for two weeks. After your villi heal the reaction can take a while, or might not even happen the first time you cheat. But make no mistake about it, the damage will be done, reaction or not. It...

    ARCHIVED Help!

The smallest amount of gluten can make DH flare up, and it could take a while before it calms down again. It can take up to two years for the gliadin deposits under the skin to be gone, and until then you you can have flare ups for no obvious reasons (even though those are usually milder). But if you cheat, you are in for it! I hope you are really...
  22. Did you ever have a biopsy? Maybe you ought to have one to have a look to see if there is visible damage or another problem (I can't believe I am saying this, but sometimes a biopsy is a good idea).
  23. Are still eating/drinking dairy? Are you using a lot of soy? Either one could be causing your problems. You may be intolerant to dairy and/or soy as well as gluten.
  24. Sorry, I don't know anything about in-vitro fertilization. What exactly is stopping your husband from fathering a baby? I am asking because it has been shown that gluten cannot only make women infertile, but men as well! Is your husband still eating gluten? If he is, he might want to try joining you in your gluten-free diet, to see if it helps. It...
  25. You got a good answer from Enterolab. Usually people with damaged villi can't digest dairy, at least for a while. It will be a good idea to eliminate all dairy for a few months, and then reintroduce it to see what happens. Soy isn't a healthy alternative to dairy, and many of us can't tolerate it, either. Rice or almond milk are better choices. But Scotty...
